ST JOHN BOSCO SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 3, WEEK 3, 7TH AUGUST 2013
Dear Parents and Carers
R.I.P We were saddened to hear of the death of former Principal, Sister Sarah Hanley, on Tuesday. She spent seven years leading this school community in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s and will be fondly remembered by some of our older community members. Please refer to the separate item for
more information. CONFIRMATION AND EUCHARIST A number of our students and others will be receiving the Sacra-ments of Confirmation and Eucharist in a couple of weeks time in the Parish Church with Archbishop Wilson. Confirmation will be at 7pm on Saturday 24th and Eucharist on Sunday 25th at 10am Your prayerful support for the candidates and their families will be much appreciated. USE OF KISS-N-DRIVE It has been observed that a number of families are using the Church driveway as a Kiss-n-Drive zone in the mornings which is creating traffic problems with cars lining up on the street waiting
to get in, preventing others from driving on. The first thing to remind you of is that it is actually against the traffic code to do so and you can be fined. If you cannot exit the roadway, it is an offence to stop, block traffic and wait. You are required to drive on, go around the block and try again or find a legal park to drop off. The second thing to remind you of is that the school’s official kiss-n-drop was moved to Marshall Terrace by the Council for just this reason. It is safer and smoother and creates less conges-tion. Please respect this and avoid the Church Driveway in the future. CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL This week we send a team of 28 runners off to the Catholic Schools Cross Country Carnival. To fit in with the spirit of the Carnival and the sport, we hope they have much fun running through the mud, creeks, gravel pits etc. and even have some success.
SWIMMING LESSONS (R-5) The annual swimming lessons take place in two weeks at the Thebarton indoor pool. Schedules and information will be provided shortly. Parents of the younger students are welcome to help in the change rooms, but if not a registered volunteer with clearance, can only help their own child.

Tax Cheque Expecting a tax refund soon?
Consider applying it to your school fees. Payment now will ensure that you do not receive that embarrassing reminder later in the year when
funds are tight heading into Christmas.
R.I.P
The Parish and School Communities are saddened by the news of the passing of Sister Sarah Hanley fma who was Principal of Saint John Bosco School from 1966 through to 1972. Many of the older members of the community will remember her for her vibrancy and her passion for sports. Sister Sarah arrived in the Province to join her Salesian confreres in 1959 and joined the community of Engadine in Sydney. She actually spent most of her 59 years of religious life at Engadine where she reached “legend” status through her sporting con-nections and engagement with young people. Not withstanding her fondness for telling Irish jokes, more than anything else she was noted for her generous spirit and her open hearted love and acceptance of each person. Although not unexpected, Sister Sarah's death came suddenly and she passed away peacefully in the presence of some friends and community members on Tuesday evening. We offer our prayers and support to the Salesian Sisters at this time of loss.

PARISH NEWS
Ask Father Joe Who keeps track of Jesus in the Holy Bible?
This question seems to be asking about who takes care of Jesus or who keeps an eye on
Jesus.
As Baby Jesus, it was his mother Mary and stepfather Joseph who took care of him. His
life was in danger early on. Mary and Joseph took baby Jesus to Egypt to flee from Herod (Matthew 2:13-23). The gospel says it was the “angel of the Lord” who gave instructions
to Joseph to escape to Egypt, and also when to come back to Nazareth. So God’s messengers, called the angels, also kept track of Jesus.
As the adult Jesus, things were the other way around. People kept track of him. He called
people to follow him, like the disciples. Other times, people wanted to follow him (Luke
9:57-62). This included several women like Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:1-2).
When Jesus was being tempted by the devil in the desert, there were angels. Matthew’s Gospel says, “Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels appeared and looked after him.” (Matthew 4:11)
But the one who Jesus always turns to is his Father. Jesus taught us to pray to our Father in heaven. He also has a unique Father-Son relationship. Jesus said,
Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. (Matthew 11:27)
On the night before he died, Jesus prayed in the garden to his Father. Jesus prayed
'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be as you, not I, would have it.' (Mark 14:36) There was also the Holy Spirit too. “Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan…” and “Jesus, with the power of
the Spirit in him..” (Luke 4:1,14).
Pray that Jesus will keep track of us.
God bless you all, Fr Joseph Lee SDB, PP

Menu Updates REMINDER: All meal deals are one price - $5.00, and NO variations to listed contents, (including drinks) will be accepted. This will simplify procedures if a volunteer is filling in. All sauces are an added 20c to each order. Incorrect Orders Remember it is always easier to correct any mistakes on the day than a week later. Please encourage your child to speak up on the day either to their teacher or you the parent. Canteen Committee The committee is a dedicated group who are always looking for something new and exciting to offer the students of SJB in the canteen. The committee meets twice a term on Thursdays at 2.20pm; Weeks 2 and 7. If you wish to contribute by being a committee member, please contact Mia, myself or other member and advise us of you interest. New faces can have a very positive effect to the running of the canteen. Every time we are approached to put a new item on the menu, we have to do our research in areas such as healthiness, preparation, cost and availability etc., but we appreciate all suggestions so keep them coming in. Volunteers To keep the canteen viable we need your support, otherwise services/choices could be reduced. If you have a current Police Clearance and a couple of hours spare between 9.30 and 1.45 Wed. to Fri., please consider spending some time volunteering in the canteen and putting a smile on your child’s face. The school community appreciates all the support you give. A big welcome to all the new volunteers who have come on board this term, it is always great to see new faces. Maria who regularly helps on Thursdays has been on the sick list and as it is a busy day I am looking for extra support for the next couple of weeks. Stock on Hand The wintery weather we are experiencing at present is making us bring out our extra warm clothing to keep the chills away. The Uniform Shop has a good supply of uniform at the moment but any high demand can quickly reduce our supply. Don’t forget, you can layer the pieces for that extra warmth. Uniform Ordering When placing an order, please supply a contact name and phone number in case we encounter problems when completing your request and we need to contact you. Second-hand Uniform Due to limited space for display it has been decided that the uniform shop will not operate a second-hand section. Possible options are-: Network with other parents of the school/classroom Advertise in the newsletter “Hand me down” to other siblings Fittings If you need a fitting PLEASE make a booking by ringing the uniform shop (8354 0832) or contacting the school office. Due to limited space, there can only be one customer in the shop at a time and you are requested not to help yourself. Your co-operation will be greatly appreciated and it will make it much easier for stocktaking if the shop is run in an orderly fashion. Uniform Hours Tuesdays only -: 8.30 to 9.15 for simple transactions/non-fittings/exchanges -: 9.15 to 11.00 appointments only, all fittings School Bags School bags if not used properly can cause back problems. Please remember to buy the appropriate size for your child and to fit it by tightening the straps so that it is not pulling backwards. It is recommended that heavier items be placed at the back nearest the child’s back with the lightest items towards the front. Always avoid overloading and to balance the contents. As a guide, with the bags currently supplied by the school, it is recommended that the smaller bag be used by students in R-3 while the bigger bags are used by students in 4-7. Remember that this is a guide and is supported by the Physio and Chiropractic associations who have to treat lots of children with bad backs as a result of carrying the bags incorrectly.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC CONCERT INFORMATION
For the first time, we will be holding an Instrumental Music Night
on Tuesday 12th November.
It starts at 7.00 pm and will be held in the Hall.
This night is an opportunity for students who have been learning for MORE
THAN ONE YEAR to perform. It is expected that all students who fit this
criteria will perform unless they have a prior commitment on that night.
Students will be asked to wear neat casual clothes and will be sitting with their parents.
A note will go home via your child’s instrumental teacher closer to the end of this term with more
information regarding this event.
I believe that the Instrumental teachers have started to work on pieces towards this night already
and I look forward to hearing all the talented students of St John Bosco on that night.
Should you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I am at St John Bosco on a Monday or Tuesday.
Thanks
