Dear Parish of St. John, This weekend we welcome the daughters of St. Paul to our church community. They will be present after all Masses in the back of the church with their books on display. Please stop by not only to see what they have to offer but also talk to them and learn about their ministry. Below you will find the Gospel reflection for this weekend. Beginning this weekend we will have it available in the Spanish version as well. I am happy to see the growth in our Spanish community at St. John. In this bulletin you find Ginny Williamson’s interview with myself. In upcoming bulletins

you will read interviews with other parishioners as well. This will be a great opportunity for us to get to know each other even better. Remember that next weekend is our first craft show. I would like to thank the K of C and Women’s Club for their help with this event. Remember to invite your friends and families to this event. Let us continue to keep those who have died in Las Vegas and their loved ones in our prayers. Fr. Karol

GOSPEL MEDITATION "Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will pro-duce its fruit." The chief priests and elders listening to Jesus must have been furious. After telling the parable about the tenants who abused the owner's property and killed his son, Jesus had a tough lesson to teach. He compared the Jewish leaders to these terrible tenants. They, like the selfish workers in the vineyard, were guilty of not respecting proper authority and of trying to seize control--not of grapes, in this case, but of reli-gious matters. In short, they were not bearing fruit for God's kingdom, but only for their own prestige and privilege. Before we spend too much time criticizing them, however, we would do well to examine ourselves. If Jesus were standing in our midst right now, would he have a similar warning for us? We may not be religious lead-ers, but we are like those tenants in many ways because we have been made stewards of the gifts of God. We receive his help and grace through the sacraments, for example. Are we good stewards of this grace, or do we take it for granted and fail to nourish it to produce good fruit? And what about the personal gifts that God has entrusted to each of us? We all have certain skills, talents, ex-periences, and opportunities thanks to God's work in our lives. Do we make the most of these things or do we settle for the easy road? Do we thank God for them or consider them to be our own? God has trusted us with a place in the world, HIS world. He is the ultimate authority here and all things we enjoy come from his hands. May we have the humility and gratitude to use his gifts for his glory and not just our own.

GETTING TO KNOW… FR. KAROL TYBOR Fr. Karol grew up in the small village of Racławice, near Kraków, Poland. His parents are Jan and Władysława Tybor, and he has 2 brothers and 3 sisters – Fr. Karol is the fifth of the six kids in his family. But of course, he is the ‘favorite’ uncle to 13 nieces and nephews. Fr. Karol knew early on he wanted to become a priest. And while his family remains in Poland and he visits often, he has made the Chicago area – and the parish of St. John in Glenwood – his home. We recently sat down with Fr. Karol to learn more about his beginnings as a priest, what motivates him, and some of the lighter sides that make him who he is today. Thank you, Fr. Karol for sharing this glimpse into your life. When did you decide you wanted to be a priest? My third year in high school. I went on a retreat and decided to think more about what I’ll do after I graduate from high school. And so what I decided to do after high school, I applied to some universities. One of the things I wanted to study was psychology at the University of Krakow; or the other one was business. So, as a pastor, I combine both. Who influenced you to consider the vocation to the priesthood? The great examples of priests I knew growing up. Many of them were missionaries and they inspired me to look further, not just around my own diocese, but to check other options too. When I was at the semi-nary in Poland, that’s when I heard about the opportunity to come to Chicago and I said, why not. Cardinal George extended the invitation to me to come. What have been some of your greatest joys as a priest? Celebrating with the Eucharist and just being with people. Sometimes at the very important times of their lives: when they are getting mar-ried, bringing children for the baptism. But sometimes also when they get sick, or need the anointing or when they die, to say a mass and prayers for them and to be with their family. What is the best part about being pastor of St. John? The people!!! Having wonderful people who are very engaged in the church life. When opportunities are created, they come and answer. Who do you call on as your mentor(s)? My mentors are saints. But in this life, some of my former pastors and professors: Fr. Larry Sullivan, Fr. Pat Boyle, Bishop Robert Barron. How do you prepare for mass, your homilies? By reading the Gospel and reflecting on how it speaks to me and the current situa-tion, the parish, my life. What are some of your favorite books/ spiritual readings/magazines? I’ve been reading books most recently by Scott Hahn and Matthew Kelly. Besides travel, what are some of your hobbies? That’s a good question. Travel is my hobby. My other hobbies that I have: play-ing board games with friends and gardening. I love food; I like going out to vari-ous restaurants. As my friends say, I love variety – so, no 2 Polish meals in a row. I love sweets and cakes, but I try to be good. I love visiting with people. Anytime people want me to come and visit, I’m always willing to do so.

Do you have any phobias or fears?

I don’t have that many fears. But I don’t like hornets. What crazy activities do you dream of trying someday?

Flying a plane. Going scuba diving. But maybe some crazy activi-ties I’ve done before: road a bicycle down the most dangerous, long road in the Bolivian jungle; I did zip lining from one mountain to another; went snorkeling with sea turtles (and I cannot swim very well). * Interviewer comment: Good thing it wasn’t swimming with sharks, then.

If you could go on a road trip with any person, dead or alive, who would it be and what would your first conversation be about?

St. John Paul II was very famous for his outdoor activities. I think it would be wonderful to be with him, and talk not only spiritually but about life in general. And to get to know him. My backup would probably be Fr. Artur J.

Do you remember any funny confessions you made as a child? Like any other child, I probably was mean to my siblings or didn’t listen to my parents. Any confessions I made back then, they were all funny to the priests to listen to probably.

What would people be surprised to learn about you? (Fr. paused and giggled) I am a really good table tennis player. I was a champion in high school. I took part in ta-ble tennis tournaments while in the seminary, representing the seminary. Played against other seminarians from other diocese. I think I went to Częstochowa for that. I didn’t do it for trophies. I don’t like things to be cluttered. I’m not a chatchky guy.

What are your guilty pleasures for TV and food? For food, I love pies. And when it comes to TV, I enjoy, ‘This is us.’ I actually like science fiction, like ‘Star Trek.’

Where did you get your sense of humor? That’s just my character. That’s part of who I am. Probably more from my dad, though.

What nickname did your family give you as a child? I didn’t really have one (Fr. says with a grin).

If you had to create your life’s motto on a bumper sticker, what would it read?

Tranquillo / Easy going! My friend Fr. Artur and I were climbing a mountain in Peru. When I got to the top of a mountain adjacent to Machu Picchu, I was enjoying the view of Machu Picchu, leaning back and resting. Fr. Artur called me ‘tranquillo’ – like, peaceful. So, it would be TRANQUILLO. (Interviewer note: Think that seems very appropriate for Fr. Karol.)

The early followers of Jesus probably gave no thought to writing down for posterity what was happening while he conducted his ministry on earth. It is likely that some notes were taken while he went around preaching, but people tried to retain in their memories what was happen-ing. Some years after his death, they realized that there was a need to write down what hap-pened during his 33 years on earth so that generations which followed would know the story. The documentation of Jesus’ life story was put together from different traditions and was struc-tured for specific audiences, such as, Jewish converts or Gentiles. So there developed four dif-ferent versions of the same Good News preached by Jesus, now called the four Gospels. It takes a long time to study these Gospels and the remaining 23 books of the New Testament, so we are providing the opportunity to survey them over a short period of time. An introduc-tion to the New Testament will begin on Wednesday, October 18th, continue over four more weeks, and end on November 15th. Participants will have the choice of attending the morning sessions (9:30-10:30) or the evening sessions (7:00-8:00). Information will be available in the church vestibule after all masses. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK How often do we find ourselves wanting what is not ours? Greed, envy, and even gluttony lead us to a bad end. We live in a world that feels very entitled. Many people believe that wants and needs ought to be provided or simply given to them, without any work or effort. It is easy to feel that we have re-ceived the short end of the stick or less than what we deserve. However, feeling shortchanged makes it is impossible to walk with gratitude in our hearts and feel a sense of responsibility, the two essential ele-ments of the spiritual life. Are we grateful?

Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 8, 2017

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,

make your requests known to God. — Philippians 4:6

The large red book that is always on the Altar is the Roman Missal. It contains the prescribed prayers, chants and instruc-tions for the celebration of Mass in the Roman Catholic Church through the world. The instructions for the Rite of Peace, as established by Conferences of Bishops, is state that it is appropriate that each person offer the sign of peace only to those who are nearest and in a sober manner.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Before long, as we’ve seen, the four newly constructed Eucharistic Prayers became two. The old Roman Canon faded away into relative disuse after 1600 unbroken years, sometimes heard only at Christmas Midnight Mass or the Easter Vigil. The new Eucharistic Prayer IV, at least in its English form, grates a bit on most hearers, and besides is meant only for Ordinary Time. The reconstruction of the ancient prayer of Hippolytus, Eucharistic Prayer II, is the most familiar, but its brevity sometimes creates an imbalance with the Liturgy of the Word. No wonder that as soon as the creative juices began to flow at the Vatican, people worldwide were trying their hands at new prayers. In 1967, even before the final shape of the new Mass was announced, bishops were asking to adapt that celebration for the needs of children. They wanted to clarify what ought to happen when large num-bers of children are at Mass: what could be adapted, omitted, or shortened. Experimentation had already begun. Separate Liturgies of the Word for children were by this time commonplace in Holland and else-where in Europe. Catechists were saying that many of our liturgical forms were too complex for the children in their charge, and priests were making adaptations on their own. Clearly, the Vatican had to take this seriously. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
