How to Make a Spiritual Act of Communion
Comments from Deacon Dale Brown Three thousand people became followers of Christ in one day, as the result of one sermon given by St Peter. That is what the Book of Acts records in the First Reading. After the Apostles received the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room, they went to the Temple to give thanks, and the presence of the Holy Spirit attracted crowds of awestruck pilgrims. Peter stands up and addresses them. He tells them about Christ. And "they were cut to the heart." These were the same crowds who had rejected Jesus just a few weeks earlier. But now the mere mention of his name "cuts them to the heart." Hearing the truth about Christ made them want to follow Christ. But they did not know how. And so, they asked, "What are we to do?" Peter explains that they need to repent and be baptized. They need to decide to give up their self-centered ways, follow Christ's teachings, and receive the sacraments worthily. We are all so familiar with this scene that we can easily overlook the most important thing. The grace of God did not reach those three thousand people directly. It reached them, inspired them, changed them, and renewed their very lives, through the mediation of the Apostles, through the preaching, witnessing, and ministry of Christ's chosen messengers. Christianity is not just about "me and Jesus." Christianity is about the whole family of Jesus. It is about his Church, through which Jesus has chosen to make himself known and loved by sinners who need his grace. The Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally called the Sunday of the Good Shepherd, and it is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Our Lord, the shepherd who wants to lead us to green pastures if we respond to his call. In today’s Gospel Our Lord teaches us that the only way to satisfy the call to holiness in our souls is through him. The call to holiness is a call to recognize Our Lord as the path and source of holiness. Our Lord uses the image of sheep who are accustomed to the voice of its shepherd and frightened by the voice of anyone else. The call to holiness strikes a chord in us, and that chord will clash with anything not in tune with Our Lord. Temptation also makes an appeal to our hearts, and Our Lord teaches us today that it will rob us of something if we let it. It is the voice of a stranger and, as our parents always taught us, we do not talk to strangers. However, in his teaching today Our Lord does not identify with the shepherd or the gatekeeper of the sheepfold. He describes himself as the “gate” to the sheepfold. Our Lord is not the only one who wants his sheep; he is just the one who has their best interests in mind. The flock in today’s Gospel is already gathered. It is only through Christ that they can be safe in the sheepfold!

Father David has asked us to pray this Prayer for Seminarians

Father, thank You for the generosity of
our seminarians. Safeguard them as they prepare for the priesthood.
Keep all evil far from them, so they may become strong Christian men
who are faithful to prayer, diligent in their studies,
open to spiritual direction, and docile to all aspects of
seminary formation. Above all,
enflame their hearts with love so they will be ardent and gentle shepherds for Your Church. We make this prayer through the great High
Priest, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

During this season of precaution & social distancing (due to the Covid-19 virus), family engagement in faith formation is more vital than ever. For that purpose, Bishop David Talley has asked all of us, whether we are families of one or eleven, to pray together daily. A weekly packet with his direction for prayer devo-tions throughout the week can be found at the link be-low:
