November 5, 2017 – All Saints’ Day

Observed

Psalm: 149; Epistle: 1 John 3:1-3; Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12

“From Here to Eternity” - Sermon Text: 1 John 3:1-3 – Rev. Dr. Thomas Ahlersmeyer

How far is it from today, to the end of your earthly existence, to the beginning of your resurrected life? From what is, to what will be? From Here to Eternity? The distance both doesn’t exist and is somewhere in the future. We are both a child of God right now and a work in process.

November 12, 2017 – Twenty-third Sunday

after Pentecost (Proper 27)

Psalm: 70; Epistle: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18;

Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13

“Ready With His Oil” - Sermon Text: Matthew 25:1-13 - Rev. Dr. Daniel Brege

Through His Word, both preached and sacramental, Christ gives us His cross-purchased, Spirit-filled gifts of forgiveness and salvation. This fits as the "oil" in our lamps. Those in the "visible church" who have replaced the "oil" with worldly beliefs, will discover too late that they are no longer associated with the eternal Bridegroom. With His "oil" Christ

establishes His people as His "wedding party", even as His "Bride" to rejoice in the eternal wedding banquet.

November 19, 2017 – Twenty-fourth Sunday

after Pentecost (Proper 28)

Psalm: 143:2; 5-6; 10-11; Epistle: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-4, 9-11; Gospel: Matthew 25:14-30

“His Precious Gift” - Sermon Text: Matthew

25:14-30 - Rev. James Elsner

Family heirlooms are precious. They connect us with our forefathers. What is God’s precious gift to you?

November 26, 2017 – Last Sunday of the

Church Year (Proper 29)

Psalm: 95:1-7a; Epistle: 1 Corinthians 15:20-

28; Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46

“It’s All Over” - Sermon Text: 1 Corinthians 15:30-28 - Rev. Paul Shoemaker

It’s all over! How many times have those words been said in victory or relief? On that great and glorious day, we shall rise to eternal life with Jesus “the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.”

Thank You THANK YOU to the St. John congregation for your generous donations of hot dishes, salads, cheese trays, desserts and all the other delicious food you brought in for the Jack Kester funeral. Also thank you to Gail Bossingham and Diane Flick (co-chairman of group 1) for coordinating the meal. Thank you kitchen helpers: Diane Flick, Emily Henke, Sandra Sweeney, Sharon Coley, Marion Oleson, Emily Saeger and Mona and Les Heindl. November 5 "Blessed Are the Pure in Heart" Guest Speaker: Dr. Dale A. Meyer This weekend many churches observe All Saints Sunday, remembering those who have died in the Christian faith. That prompts us to ask, what does it take to get to heaven? Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:8, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." What that means is this week's Lutheran Hour message. (Matthew 5:8) November 12 "More Than a Wish" Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus Not so long ago over 370 million tickets were sold for a Powerball drawing. Each person

who made a purchase had hope that they might become rich. Most were disappointed. In 1 Thessalonians 4, St. Paul explains how the resurrection hope of Christians is better than the hopelessness of the world and far more solid than groundless wishful thinking (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14) November 19 "The Reckoning" Guest Speaker: Dr. Dale A. Meyer You hear little talk about the 'Fear of God" anymore, but if you don't in some way fear your Creator who judges you down to your inmost being, why would you love your only Savior whom He sends you? A message about fearing and loving God. (Matthew 25:14-30) November 26 "Show Me" Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus In Lerner and Loewe's musical, My Fair Lady, Eliza is being wooed with words by weak and wimpy suitor. She comments: "Don't talk of stars, burning above If you're in love, show me Tell me not dreams, filled with desire If you're on fire, show me." In Jesus' description of Judgment Day, the Savior goes on record: true love needs to show itself in action. (Matthew 25:31-46)

Random Act of Kindness

Believe it or not….it’s

THAT time of year

again, when the elves

of the Human Care

Board set up a

Christmas tree in the

Narthex with the

ornaments

proclaiming the

names of our

Christmas Family

member wants and

needs printed on

them! Yes, it’s that

time again. I don’t

have the names yet, but should have by next

week. So friends….watch for the tree, put on

your fun Christmas shopping smile and we

will try to make a brighter Christmas for three

area families! Mona Heindl, chairperson The
