PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone

"I wish I knew then what I know now." How many times have we heard, or even uttered, that phrase. It usually occurs in the context of some experience in our lives in the past that we recall from the vantage point of the present, and we overlay a sense of regret for how we acted or behaved at that time. It maybe about a job that we took, a relationship that we entered into, an opportunity that we let slide by, a statement or decision that we made, that in retrospect seemed to have been infelicitous. When we say this, we mean that given our current perspective, we would have happily done something different. To tritely put it another way, everyone has 20/20 hindsight, or so we believe. Someone once caught me short when I said that cliché‚ by asking, "Well, what do you know now?" And I realized that the only thing really that I knew was what happened, the consequences of my actions. When I do what I do, I am not usually short of knowledge - the things of the mind - but rather when I make mistakes, I lack the wisdom or good sense to put my knowledge to best use. It is not a matter of what I know or don't know that causes regrets in my life, but rather a matter of the proper utilization of that knowledge... It is not my head that fails me, but rather my whole being that somehow misfires. Or at least so it appears from the vantage point of looking back in time, aware of the results. This is the time of year for school graduations: from grammar school (as we celebrate at St. John of God this week, sadly our final one) or high school or college or graduate school. Invariably, a ceremony is held and a certificate given that is meant to symbolize the attainment of a modicum of knowledge commensurate with the level of achievement that the person is graduating from.

continued next column . . .

(And by the way, I have gained enough knowledge to know that it is in fact permissible to end a sentence with a preposition!) People presume that with each "graduation" received, they have learned more to prepare them to make the right decisions in life. But our life choices are not predicated for success on the basis of knowledge. What we know is only a tool, an instrument; a means, not an end. If we have not undergone a total formation, learning how to use our minds in the context of our whole life experience, integrating with our hearts and our souls and our place in a larger society, then we are setting ourselves up for a lifetime of regretful retrospectives, a long line of wistful clichés like the one that began this essay. Wisdom, understanding, insight, integrity, courage, responsibility, and a whole catalogue of other faculties and virtues are necessary to live a successful life. And we have no certificates or graduation ceremonies to mark the acquisit ion of these most necessary accomplishments. That's a pity, because we could use such an external sign to guarantee the possession of these internal achievements. At any rate, congratulations to all graduates at all levels this month. We are proud of what you have done, and wish you the best, with our prayers and blessings, on what you will do with what you know now.
