Blessings on the Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Today we begin the penultimate week of the current liturgical year. The final (34th) Sunday of Ordinary Time is celebrated as the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. A new year of grace will begin on the First Sunday of Advent. This bulletin has information about the Sarah Hart concert this Sunday afternoon. All are welcome. November 18 is the fifth anniversary of the installation of Blase Cardinal Cupich as the Archbishop of Chicago. November 19 is the third anniversary of his elevation to the College of Cardinals. November 21 is the anniversary of the dedication of Holy Name Cathedral. May these commemorations remind us to pray for our local/diocesan church and for the Renew My Church process. November 22 is the Memorial of Saint Cecilia. This third century martyr is included in the Roman Canon and has been honored in Rome since the fifth century. The patroness of Sacred Music gives us an opportunity to express our gratitude to all the musicians, vocalists and instrumentalists, cantors and choir members, who assist our prayer under the direction of Jessica Koch. November 23 is Harvest Saturday, one way that our parish community answers the biblical command to feed the hungry. This bulletin has details. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) was founded in 1970 as the Catholic Church’s anti-poverty program in the United States. Each year, CCHD funds organizations working in Cook and Lake Counties on issues that include housing, immigrant and worker rights, violence prevention, education, economic development, etc. The annual collection will be taken up next weekend. Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel

God our Father, we thank you for

calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom

as priests, deacons, and consecrated persons.

Send your Holy Spirit to help others

to respond generously and courageously to your call.

May our community of faith

support vocations of sacrificial love.

Mary, Queen of the Clergy,

pray for us; pray for our seminarians. Keep them close to you.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

On Monday, November 4, seminarian Seth Hostelter was instituted as a Lector. This is one of the ritual steps of his preparation for ordination. Congratulations to Seth and his classmates.

Dear Parents of First Communicants: The Renew My Church (RMC) process has reconfigured the parishes to our north (Divine Infant and Divine Providence in Westchester), to our east (St. Louise De Marillac in LaGrange Park and St. Barbara in Brookfield), and this month the parishes and schools to our southwest in Lemont. While I do not envision the same outcome for our grouping of parishes and schools any time soon, RMC has taught us that business as usual is no longer possible. This, in part, was the rationale behind the change in Mass schedule last Pentecost, enabling us to better coordinate activities and ministries with our RMC grouping parishes: St. Cletus and St. Francis Xavier in LaGrange. The liturgical documents call the Eucharist the source and summit of the Christian Life. By extension then, the Sunday Mass is the source and summit of our parish life. This is St. John of the Cross at our best. A stated goal of our pastoral staff is to connect our parish activities and ministries to the Sunday Masses. For years the Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick have been celebrated at Sunday Masses. Recently, the integration of our school community with the daily Mass and the inclusion of pre-Confirmation rituals including the 7th grade commitment ceremony and the 8th grade sponsor meeting with the weekend Masses have gone smoothly. Unfortunately, the proposal to celebrate First Communions as part of the scheduled Masses has not gone smoothly. Since the unity intended to be celebrated in this initiation sacrament has been jeopardized, I hope to ease the transition regarding the scheduling of First Communions. Please know that all sacramental celebrations, including First Communion, are special. As is our tradition, our liturgies are reverent, respectful, prayerful and beautiful. For those who are comfortable with celebrating First Communion at the parish Mass on April 25-26 or May 2-3 that you selected, no action is required. Any family not yet comfortable with this change, the option of an added concelebrated Mass at 11:00am on Saturday, May 2 will now be available. Interested parents should contact Janet Caschetta, Director of Youth Catechesis, at [email protected] with your preference by the end of November. I recognize that change, while inevitable, can be difficult. I regret that this matter was not handled and communicated more effectively. Our parish staff will learn from this and we will continue to evaluate the best ways to achieve our goals for the long-term vitality of St. John of the Cross Parish. As a parish community we need to be unified to live out the core of our mission, that is Jesus whose Body we receive and become in Holy Communion. I look forward to welcoming your child to the Eucharistic banquet and remain committed to pastoring our vibrant faith community. Sincerely,

Rev. Marc W. Reszel

All are Welcome!

Sarah Hart

Family Concert

November 17-18 Sarah Hart is one of the leading figures in contemporary Catholic music today. Her songs of faith and workshops have touched the lives of thousands. Originally from Lancaster, Ohio, she has a degree in music from Ohio State University. Now based in Nashville, she’s on the road a good part of the year, juggling a busy songwriting, recording, concert and event schedule. Many of her songs are part of the common worship experience of Catholics in the US: “Go in Peace,” “You Alone,” “Sweet Redeemer” and others. Her signature blend of folk, pop and rock delights listeners of every age. She has just finished her 11th full-length recording, “And Lovely It Is.” In 2013, Sarah was invited to perform for the Pope and a crowd of 150,000 in St. Peter’s Square. While her resume lists a lot of different work, she sees a thread running through everything she does. "I think it's all about life," Hart says. "It's all about faith and the human experience, and that's what allows people to relate. You have to be in touch with that experience as an artist; fearlessness in that place of honesty, and being able to write, speak and sing from it is, for me, the key." In her travels, the reward is meeting people, sharing her stories, and having them share their own experiences, too. “To be able to do this work and offer a little bit of an oasis to people – a little time to delve in and have fun and look deeper into their faith and desire more -- that's really rewarding to me. I’m incredibly grateful to meet such amazing folks, to have them be a part of my journey, and grateful for them allowing me be a part of theirs."

Sarah Hart will perform for our parish on

Sunday, November 17 at 3:00pm-4:30pm

and

Monday, November 18 at 6:30pm-8:00pm

in church.

Also, all women of the parish are welcome

to attend a special Morning of Reflection

Working on the Margins: Forming Leaders and Building Community

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is helping grassroots community organizations to form leaders in Chicago. One of those leaders is Yuliza Soto, a junior at Prosser High School, a Belmont-Cragin resident and a youth leader with Communities United. In Yuliza’s words, “Communities United brings together adults and youth to build power so we can address the issues that impact our communities and schools in a local, city and state level.” CU’s leadership training helped Yuliza to facilitate a door knocking event to encourage neighbors to vote in the mayoral election. Also, earlier this year, Yuliza went to Springfield with over 300 students and community members. They got a bill passed in the Illinois State Legislature that will provide more mental health resources in schools. Reflecting on her experiences with CU, Yuliza shares, “There are so many amazing people in [CU]. We all may be from different neighborhoods but we are a family. Seeing all these incredible people who are different work together towards the same goal gives me hope for the future of our communities... Together we will continue to fight for mental health resources in our schools, police reform, affordable housing and equitable funding for our schools and communities.” This is just one example of the amazing work made possible by CCHD grants! In fact, over the past grant year, CCHD funded organizations provided leadership development and community organizing trainings to over 2500 people in the Chicago area.

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe for Justice

Most merciful mother, you came to tell us of your compassion

through St. Juan Diego, whom you called the littlest and dearest of

your sons. Give your strength and protection to all who live in

poverty today, especially the young, elderly, and vulnerable. Plead

for them to the Father, that they might experience the Divine Love

tangibly in their daily lives, and that all who work for justice on

behalf of the poor might grow in fortitude and humility. In these

ways, manifest your charity and concern in our lives, that the

weeping of humanity may be heard, and all our suffering, pain, and

misfortune may be filled with divine comfort and healing. May we

always know the peace of being in the cradle of your arms, and bring

us safely home to your son, Jesus. Amen.

Prayer

God be in my head

and in my understanding;

God be in my eyes

and in my looking;

God be in my mouth

and in my speaking;

God be in my heart

and in my thinking;

God be in my end

and at my departing.

God, oh God, it is you I seek.

And, with your constant loving support I will even try to seek you in lost causes,

those dark and forgotten places that I can't imagine you present.

And yet you are there. Help me to be there too,

seeking, finding, proclaiming your goodness

even as the day darkens and my spirit draws back to my false safety of self.

Fill me with wonder of your goodness, replacing my self doubt with confidence in you

and your sure and steady help. - Author Unknown Xavier University

God, we are your beloved.

Even in our unfinished state, you take delight in what we are

and what we will become. Help us to claim

for our own your gentle leading

in our lives, help us to know you are

always hoping for more for us and from us.

Give us the strength and peace of heart

to be filled with your power. - Author Unknown

Dear God, Spirit, Divine Mother, On this day I ask you to grant this request, May I know who I am and what I am, Every moment of every day.

May I be a catalyst for light and love, And bring inspiration to those whose eyes I meet. May I have the strength to stand tall in the face of conflict, And the courage to speak my voice, even when I'm scared. May I have the humility

to follow my heart, And the passion to live my soul's desires. May I seek to know the highest truth And dismiss the gravitational pull of my lower self. May I embrace and love the totality of myself, My darkness as well as my light. May I be brave enough

to hear my heart, To let it soften so that I may gracefully Choose faith over fear. Today is my day to surrender anything that stands Between the sacredness

of my humanity and my divinity.

May I be drenched in my Holiness

And engulfed

by Your love. May all else melt away. And so it is. - Debbie Ford Xavier University

God of creation,

your mercy and justice

is revealed

of your son Jesus Christ.

Hear our prayers

that we might

follow his example

in all that we do.

Background on the Gospel

In the context of Luke, today's Gospel appears near the end of Jesus' teaching in Jerusalem, just prior to the events that will lead to his crucifixion. His warnings and predictions are ominous but can be read in many ways. To those who first heard Luke's Gospel, those may have been words of encouragement. The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Romans was history (70 A.D.); Luke's Gospel, Catholic scholars propose, was written between 80 and 90 A.D. His audience was probably Gentile Christians. Luke here tries to interpret the fall of Jerusalem for them and to locate it in God's plans for humankind (salvation history). At the same time, Luke is suggesting to his audience that there will be a considerable elapse of time before Jesus' final coming. Luke's listeners have likely seen much upheaval and are anxious to know if these are the signs of Jesus' coming. Luke is urging greater patience. In the second part of today's Gospel, Jesus warns that his followers will face persecution for their beliefs. Luke presents persecution as an opportunity for the followers of Jesus for “It will lead to your giving testimony” (Luke 21:13). In persecution God's wisdom and power will be shown in the example of followers of Jesus. Perseverance in the face of persecution will lead to their salvation. Here Jesus is assuring his followers that God is present to all believers, even in times of trouble. Ultimately, Jesus will witness to this with his own death. As disciples of Jesus, we try to follow his example, trusting in God's mercy and protection, even when we are facing difficulties. Loyola Press

To the Point

• As corporal beings, it is easy for us to get caught up in stuff. We take comfort in things we can see, touch, hear, and smell. Today’s gospel begins with people around Jesus appreciating the beauty of the temple. In architecture we can see what is really important to a community. Just as Europeans in the Middle Ages spent decades and precious resources on their great cathedrals, the people of Jesus’ time spent forty-six years constructing the temple, a privileged place to be with God. • As we look to our own lives, we can name the places that we rely on and appreciate for their beauty and comfort: our homes, churches, schools, government buildings, and national monuments. These structures are good, but not permanent. They can be destroyed by any number of forces, many beyond our control. And yet, Jesus tells us, “[D]o not be terrified.” The firm foundation under our feet is not one of wood, concrete, brick, or stone. It is the Lord in which “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28; NABRE). • As we come to the end of our church year, we can take this time to think about where we place our hope, our time, and our resources. Is there architecture within your interior life that could use some building up? Is God calling you to create more space for prayer, community, and love? Jesus reminds us that these structures alone can never be destroyed. ©Living Liturgy

May we grow

in the wisdom of Jesus

and persevere in fidelity

to his name.

May we embrace each day

as a new beginning,

making choices

that will secure for us

eternal Life.

For Reflection:

The Gospel reading ends with Jesus

calling the disciples to perseverance.

Where in your life are you in need of

perseverance at this moment?

Lord Jesus Christ,

we know not your coming and going,

but we are confident

of your eternal reign

when we shall live in an era of peace.

When the struggles of

daily life afflict us,

may we be strengthened

by our hope in you;

may we persevere in faith,

knowing that you have prepared

a place for us

in your heavenly kingdom.

We ask this in your holy name.

Amen.

Little Blue Books for Advent Prayer

Advent begins on Sunday, December 1. Once again SJC is offering Little Blue Books as a prayer companion for Advent. The right hand side of each page will cite a part of the Gospel for the Mass each day followed by a reflection. The left hand side has timely thoughts, quotes and information. You might want to share some of it at dinner with your family. It should not take more than 6 minutes each day—an easy commitment. Let the Little Blue Book slow you down and let you be with Christ in a special way each day this season. Give them to your family members as a personal invitation to pray this Advent. Reflections begin on the First Sunday of Advent and end on the Baptism of the Lord. The Little Blue Books will be available at the exits of church after all Masses next weekend or until our supply runs out. Suggested donation $1.

Speech Club

The speech club was founded 24 years ago by parishioner Chris Sever, a parent in the school community at the time. She established the Club and the Sever Award has been awarded to the 8

th

grade student each year who demonstrates exceptional skills in speech delivery, attendance, as well as Catholic character and integrity. The students can participate in Speech Club in 6

th, 7

th, and 8

th grade.

Each grade practices together before school during the week on a designated day. They have been practicing since the first week in September. Parent Monitors attend the practices to listen to each child practice their speech and provide feedback. We are looking for tone/inflection and articulation, memorization, eye contact, and composure. These kids work hard to memorize a five to nine minute speech. On the night of the contest they deliver their speeches to two judges. This year we had 50 kids participate! St. John of the Cross is very proud of all of the participants in our Speech Club.
