THE CALL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO CONSIDER A VOCATION may sometimes be a gentle voice stirring the soul or a personal longing in our hearts. It may be the urging of friends or spouses. It can also find birth in the invitation of pastors, deacons and parish leaders to pursue such an inquiry. No matter the source of our questions, each of us needs to be affirmed and encouraged to bring a call to a vocation to prayerful discernment. The Institute for Diaconal Studies (IDS) invites all men who feel the gentle nudge of the Holy Spirit to attend an Exploring the Diaconate session. It is a time to pray, discuss, and learn more about the discernment process and the formation program that aspirants and candidates pursue. Please join us, with your wives, if married, as we explore the potential of a vocation, engage in dialogue and pray in search of the next step. All are welcome to attend any of the sessions. Dear Parishioners, The Saturday 5:00pm Mass this weekend, as it has in the past, is host to the 212 Confirmation students as they conclude their retreat Day of the Spirit. The eighth graders come in the morning and individually experience the sacrament of reconciliation as well as small group work around each of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Several years ago the catechetical staff began using high school students as witnesses and facilitators for the day. The Confirmation students seem to pay better attention to students a few years older than they are rather than to adult presenters (D’oh!). It’s a day of (remote) preparation with the sacrament being celebrated February 4, 2017. We are blessed to have our (Vicariate IV) Episcopal Vicar, Bishop Manz, confer the sacrament. As we get closer to February we will have individual names for you to pray for, but until then you can still keep them in your heart and mind and prayers. They are our future and need all the support we can give them. Sunday afternoon at Holy Name Cathedral, Archbishop Cupich, assisted by each of the six Episcopal Vicars (auxiliary bishops), will present the Christi Fideles (Christ’s Faithful) award to people from across the archdiocese. This year Mary Novotny will be the recipient for her many years of work with Christian Meditation for the parish. Mary has faithfully opened the Parish Center every Saturday morning at 7:00am and gathered a group to learn about meditation and spend time together practicing Christian Meditation. Most parishes in the archdiocese don’t have a single meditation group, but because of Mary’s leadership and example we have four: Saturday morning, Monday morning Christian Meditation as an 11th Step, Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon, each led by different individuals. With a support group of other meditators, Mary has led Mornings of Meditation for both new and experienced meditators. These are usually on Saturday mornings during Advent and Lent. Mary’s quiet leadership and prayerfulness have added a dimension to parish life that would be missing were it not for her. Thank you Mary for being the blessing you are to SJC. Congratulations on your receiving the Christi Fideles award. SJC hosts a number of events for the archdiocese, whether the school office or different agencies. We are a host site for the Chicago Scripture School which meets Wednesday nights. This Sunday night at 6:30pm we will host the Association of Chicago Priests (ACP) as they celebrate their 50th anniversary, being founded October 24, 1966 at McCormick Place. The ACP began to implement the mandates of Vatican II when there was no clear direction from the Vatican on how it should be done. One of the hallmarks of the ACP priests was working with the laity as equals, especially when it came to issues of social justice. The ACP has invited Fr. Tom Rosica, CSB, to give an address that will take place in the church. His talk in entitled, HOLY ODORS: New Scents for Shepherds and Sheep Today. Fr. Rosica is a well-known and respected biblical scholar, lecturer, speaker, retreat preacher and author; he is fluent in several languages and has served the Church at a local, national and universal level in his years of ordained ministry as a priest in the Congregation of St. Basil. You are welcome to attend. These unusually warm days of October are treasured gifts for those of us who dread the cold of winter. Enjoy the beauty of the changing of the seasons. Until the Breaking of the Bread, Fr. David

The Year of Mercy: The Spirit of the Samaritan By Jack Shea

“The Jubilee … demands that we not neglect the spirit which emerged from Vatican II, the spirit of the Samaritan.” Pope Francis The spirit of the Samaritan is: whatever it takes. We know the story. A man, going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, falls into the hands of robbers who strip him, beat him, and leave him half-dead. Whenever life is stripped, beaten, and left half dead, it doesn’t acquiesce easily. Even if there are no words, life cries out, hoping stronger life will appear to help. A priest and Levite did not bring this stronger life. They see the robbed and beaten man, but pass by. They are too busy to hear the cry. They have a destination, people to see, tasks to complete. Their calendar conquers. For them, it is delay that is deadly. A Samaritan comes by. He has compassion and comes close, entering into the suffering of another. He attends to his wounds with whatever he has. He has no bandages, only clothing that he ripped into strips. He had no ointment, only oil for cooking he turned into salve. He had no medicine, only wine for drinking he turned into antiseptic. He turned what he had into what he needed. Then he puts him on his own animal, brings him to an inn, and takes care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, “Take care of him. When I come back, I will repay you whatever is needed. The Samaritan uses his own animal, supplies financial support, recruits others, and pledges full support until health is restored. The spirit of the Samaritan is to do whatever it takes to alleviate the sufferings of another. Is there any situation in which you are presently involved that needs this spirit?

October 23 Jubilee of Mercy Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, For 90 years the Church has celebrated World Mission Sunday as a way of highlighting the merciful mission of Christ that brings hope to the world. In this Jubilee of Mercy we in the Archdiocese of Chicago place Christ at the center of our communities and dream together about the renewal of our Church. We believe that as Christ sends us forward to be his missionary disciples, He will also give us what we need to renew His Church and transform the world. This 90th celebration of World Mission will take place on October 23, which we will mark in solidarity with the countless missionaries who bring the Gospel to some of the most remote places and cultures. They need our support through prayer and our financial gifts. Your generosity enables local priests, religious, and catechists to travel to remote areas for the work of evangelization and to build churches, educate children and adults, prepare young men for the priesthood, and provide medical care through Catholic hospitals and clinics. As we begin the Renew My Church effort in the Archdiocese of Chicago World Mission Sunday prompts us to reflect on our priorities to be vital and mission driven parishes. The Church’s world mission is fundamentally about bringing people to Christ whether that is in our own neighborhoods or across the continents. We are all invited to participate in this effort. I pray that every parish will respond to this year’s World Mission Sunday by actively offering its generous stewardship and fervent prayer for missionaries and people of faith throughout the world. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

Words of Mercy One Word at a Time provides a key Word related to the Year of Mercy, along with reflections on how to put that Word into practice in our everyday lives. The Words can serve as the spark for a discussion of faith at home or as a personal reflection. Stop in our church narthex to read all the Words we have reflected on so far.

Parish Advisory Council Fall Update

St. John of the Cross Parish 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 23, 2016 Page 4

Fall, 2016 Dear Parishioners, After each Parish Advisory Council Meeting (PAC) we publish a summary letter in the bulletin to keep the parish informed of our work. On our parish website you can find a current picture of the Council with names and positions of each member, our meeting pre-reads, and meeting minutes. Welcome The PAC, which meets three times per year, gathered last Tuesday, October 11 in the Parish Center for our fall meeting. First on our agenda was to introduce ourselves and meet our new council members. We welcomed Randy Ferrari and Beth White, newly elected at-large parish reps, Ann Gornik and Bill Mear, new apostles, and Jennifer Miller, the new Women’s Club rep. In addition to the pastoral staff, 23 parishioners serve the PAC representing each consultative body (School Advisory Board, Youth Catechesis Council, and Finance Council) and ministry advisory group (Outreach, Crossroads, Adult Spirituality, Women’s Club) as well as elected parish reps and appointed apostles. (Parish reps and apostles are members who have stepped forward to expand parishioner involvement and widen our circle of communication across the parish.) Assisting me this year as vice-chairperson is Lisa Geneser. Purpose At our meeting we reviewed the purpose of the council and its work over the past 6 years since restructuring. The purpose of the PAC is threefold: to act as an advisory group to the pastor and pastoral staff, to communicate and collaborate across parish groups, staff and volunteers to guide the parish in living out its mission, and to encourage community building throughout the parish. Key Communications Each consultative body and ministry advisory group submits an electronic pre-read highlighting goals, concerns, and accomplishments before each meeting. Then at the meeting each representative answered questions and shared important points they wanted to communicate to the whole parish. These are included in detail in the meeting minutes found on the parish website. Common threads running through our conversation were that SJC is indeed living out the core values of our mission with renewed energy and commitment. Parishioners continue to show generous support sharing their time, talent and treasure. Spiritual, social and service opportunities for parishioners of all ages and interests abound within the parish. We are blessed to be part of a welcoming faith community that is clearly grounded in the vision and mission of Jesus, inviting us to do our part in helping to bring about His Kingdom on earth. I look forward to keeping you up to date on the work of the Parish Advisory Council after our winter meeting on February 25, 2017. Brian King Chairperson

The Month of November

St. John of the Cross Parish 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 23, 2016 Page 6

Please join us Wednesday, November 2 at 7pm to celebrate the Feast of All Souls. Our Mass of Remembrance will commemorate parishioners and loved ones who

have died during the past year. As the names of all deceased are read aloud, families will be invited to light a votive candle as we prayerfully remember them.

The Books of Life In keeping with the important observance of this month, our parish Books of Life will be placed along the north wall of our church. These books, one for each month, list the names of every person who has been buried from St. John of the Cross Parish and their date of death. As a parish that is rooted in faith in our Lord Jesus, let us prayerfully recall these deceased members of our community. Take time to look through the books. Find the names of those you know and offer a prayer for them.

The Book of Remembrance During the month of November, the Month of All Souls, parishioners and visitors to St. John of the Cross Parish are invited to write the names of their beloved dead in The Book of Remembrance found by the baptismal font. The Book of Remembrance will remain there through the month of November. Unlike the Books of Life, which list only deceased parishioners of St. John of the Cross, our Book of Remembrance may include the names of all our deceased loved ones. If you would like your loved ones remembered throughout the coming year, complete an All Souls envelope which can be found on the lectern. These envelopes will be placed in a basket under our altar, and we will remember them at Mass each week as Our Beloved Dead. Remembering all of those who have gone before us, “marked with the sign of faith,” helps us better understand and appreciate our faith in the Christ, our risen Lord, who conquers sin and death and brings new life to all.

Month of All Souls The origins of the solemnity of All Saints (November 1) and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day, November 2) are connected. From the beginnings of the Church, Christians have cherished the memory of those martyred for the faith and those who lived a life of virtue as icons of Jesus Christ. The martyrs and saints became venerated as disciples and imitators of Christ. All the saints are celebrated each year on November 1; however, most Christian traditions of honoring the dead are linked with All Souls Day on November 2. On this day, we remember our own loved ones who have gone before us in faith. These tributes extend beyond the day itself and last through the month of November, the Month of All Souls.

A Prayer for Those Who Mourn

Comfort us in our loss and sorrow,

O Lord. Be our refuge and our strength. Lift us from the depths of grief

into the peace and light of your presence.

Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by dying has destroyed our death,

and by rising restored our life. Enable us to press on toward him

so that after our earthly course is run, he may reunite us with those we love, when every tear will be wiped away. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Lifelong Learning

St. John of the Cross Parish 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 23, 2016 Page 7

Background on the Gospel Reading The second parable that Jesus tells in Luke 18 addresses attitude in prayer. In contrasting the prayer of the Pharisee with the prayer of the tax collector, Jesus teaches his disciples to pray in humility before God. Jesus again surprises his listeners by showing the tax collector as the example of faith, rather than the Pharisee. Remember that Pharisees were members of a sect of Judaism active in Jesus' time. They taught an oral interpretation of the Law of Moses as the basis for Jewish piety. If anyone would be a model for prayer, a Pharisee was a likely candidate. In contrast, Jesus offers the tax collector as a model for prayer. Tax collectors were collaborators with the Roman authorities in a system that allowed the tax collectors to line their own pockets by charging in excess of the defined taxes. Yet, in this parable, Jesus offers the humility of the tax collector as a model for the prayer of a disciple. The parable reminds us that when we pray, we must remember our need for God in our lives. If we are too full of ourselves, there is too little room for God's grace to work in us. Loyola Press

Living the Gospel Both the Pharisee and tax collector addressed God in prayer. The content of their prayer, however, differed greatly. The Pharisee’s prayer was about himself and was turned toward self; his prayer was about justifying himself. The tax collector’s prayer, by contrast, was turned toward God in the true self-knowledge of who he was. Jesus declared the tax collector justified, not the Pharisee. Jesus tells us that we are “justified” when we know who we are before God and open ourselves in humility to receive God’s mercy. Justification—right relationship with God—comes only from knowing ourselves as God knows us. The message Jesus teaches in this gospel is that justification comes not to those who consider themselves righteous, but to those who humbly acknowledge their need for God’s mercy. Paradoxically, true humility is exaltation. Exaltation is the gift received while being one’s true self before God and others. In this there’s great hope in this gospel for all of us, for we are all sinners. The tax collector (generally hated for the practice of extortion) “stood off at a distance / and would not even raise his eyes to heaven,” a posture indicating he recognized his sinfulness and unworthiness before God. His prayer says something true about God (who is merciful) and himself (who is a sinner). The tax collector’s prayer allows God to be God and show mercy. The tax collector’s prayer reveals both an understanding of God and the desire to be in right relation with God. The tax collector stands far off, but his prayer draws him near to God. This is exaltation—being near to God. ©Living Liturgy

May we be honest about ourselves before God and be authentic in our prayer. May we admit our sinfulness and in prayer beg for God’s mercy.

Prayer

St. John of the Cross Parish 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 23, 2016 Page 8

O God, we thank You for this earth, our home; for the wide sky and the blessed sun,

for the salt sea and the running water, for the everlasting hills and the never-resting winds,

for trees and the common grass underfoot. We thank You for our senses by which we hear

the songs of birds, and see the splendor of the summer fields, and taste of the autumn fruits,

and rejoice in the feel of the snow, and smell the breath of the spring.

Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty; and save our souls from being so blind

that we pass unseeing when even the common thorn bush is aflame with Your glory.

O God our creator, who lives and reigns forever and ever. -Walter Rauschenbusch

O God of Creation, you have blessed us

with the changing of the seasons.

As we embrace these autumn months,

may the earlier setting of the sun

remind us to take time to rest.

May the crunch of the leaves beneath our feet

remind us of the brevity of this earthly life.

May the steam of our breath in the cool air

remind us that it is you

who give us your breath of life.

May the scurrying of the squirrels

and the migration of the birds

remind us that you call us

to follow your will.

We praise you for your goodness . Amen.

Father of compassion, Lord of all that is good,

you love us without limit, you accept us as your own

without condition. In a spirit of joyful humility,

may we, too, learn to love one another without limit or condition.

We offer these prayers in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

We praise you, Lord,

for what autumn teaches. We praise you for the beauty

and color and drama

you have put into what is dying.

Teach us to die to ourselves, to give our all,

with such grace and energy

and spirit, that your name will be glorified and held high.

Glory be, as autumn teaches,

to the Father and the Son

and the Holy Spirit, now and forever,

Amen.

May nothing keep you from growing in friendship

with God. Pope Francis @Pontifex Oct 17

Prayer Matters “Never abandon prayer, even if it feels pointless to pray.”

Pope Francis This year the theme for YC is Prayer Matters...because it does! Prayer is never pointless; God hears us. What sacramental do you have in your home? If someone entered your home, would they know you were Catholic? Would they see signs of Christ on your tables and walls? Just as items of sports figures inspire our children to excel in sports, Christ inspires our faith. Sacramental are sacred signs which bear a resemblance to the sacraments. They signify effect particularly of a spiritual nature, which are obtained through the intercession of the Church (CCC#1667). Crosses—Bibles—Saint Statues—Faith Books—Rosary—Prayer Jars—Mugs with Scripture—Religious Metals—Holy Water—Candles—Scapulars Filling our homes with signs of our faith remind us to pray and continue to build our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Look for new ways to pray together as a family or individually. Contact the YC office for resources. Looking Ahead: Due to Halloween being on a Monday, there will be NO YC Classes on Sunday, October 30 or Monday, October 31. A Family Home Lesson on Saints will be emailed this week. Please complete it together and return by the end of November.

This week, we celebrated “Unity Day: When we stand together, no one stands alone.” During Unity Day, we stress acceptance, kindness and inclusion. In past years, we have gathered outside for an all school prayer. This year, our students participated in a “Mix It Up” day at lunch. All of our children sat with someone from a different grade level. They were able to spend the time chatting and getting to know someone new. The staff all wore Unity t-shirts to stress the importance of acceptance on this day.

Our pastor, Fr. David, and the new Director of Kolbe House, Fr. Mark Bartosic, have asked SJC parishioners to help with a very special project. In this Year of Mercy, November 6 has been designated by Pope Francis as “Jubilee for Prisoners.” Since Kolbe House can’t bring us into the jail, or bring the detainees out, we invite you to participate by praying for an individual inmate. Detainees at Cook County Jail have written prayer intentions on prayer cards which will be brought to SJC. All interested SJC Prayer Partners are then asked to commit to praying for a specific prisoner and their intention on the Jubilee Day, November 6. In addition to praying for them, we ask you to take the time to write a short note on the back side of the card. These notes should be in response to what the inmate has written, asking for your prayers. Your response should be very brief, just a few sentences, but it should be warm, personal and give encouragement in the Lord. Do not include any identifying information other than your first name. The staff of Kolbe House will then deliver your note to the inmate. There will be no detainee name on the prayer card, but it will be coded to ensure that it is returned to the correct person. Please let our Outreach Ministry Group Chairperson and Kolbe House rep, Rose Horvath, know if you would like to participate in this work of mercy. Rose can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at 708-246-8633. Prayer cards may then be picked up at the Parish Center Office during regular business hours. The cards should be dropped off or mailed back to the Parish Center by November 10. Note on November 6, Assumption BVM/Kolbe House is having a Jubilee Holy Hour from 3 to 4pm. It is located at 2434 California Avenue, Chicago. All are welcome to this prayer service or to pray for the prisoners during that time at your home or wherever you are that day. Thank you for your support and prayers for the men and women of Cook County Jail and the staff and volunteers of Kolbe House.

Thirty-four years ago when I launched this column, I would never have said this: Restlessness is not something to be cultivated, no matter how romantic that might seem. Don’t get Jesus confused with Hamlet, peace with disquiet, depth with dissatisfaction, or genuine happiness with the existential anxiety of the artist. Restlessness inside us doesn’t need to be encouraged; it wreaks enough havoc all on its own. But I’m a late convert to this view. From earliest childhood through mid-life, I courted a romance with restlessness, with stoicism, with being the lonely outsider, with being the one at the party who found it all too superficial to be real. Maybe that contributed to my choosing seminary and priesthood; certainly it helps explain why I entitled this column, In Exile. For most of my life, I have equated restlessness with depth, as something to be cultivated, This came naturally to me and all along the way I’ve found powerful mentors to help me carry my solitude in that way. During my high school years, I was intrigued with Shakespeare’s, Hamlet. I virtually memorized it. Hamlet represented depth, intensity, and romance; he wasn’t a beer-drinker. For me, he was the lonely prophet, radiating depth beyond superficiality. In my seminary years I graduated to Plato (“We are fired into life with a madness that comes from the gods and has us believe that we can achieve a great embrace, make ourselves immortal, and contemplate the divine”); to Augustine (“You have made us for yourself, Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you”); to John of the Cross (We go through life fired by love’s urgent longings); to Karl Rahner (“In the torment of the insufficiency of everything attainable, we learn that here in this life there is no finished symphony”). Reading these thinkers helped me put my youthful romanticism under a high symbolic hedge. Alongside these spiritual writers, I was much influenced by a number of novelists who helped instill in me the notion that life is meant to be lived with such an inner intensity and high romanticism so as to preclude any simple satisfaction in life’s normal, everyday pleasures and domestic joys. For me, Nikos Kazantzakis’ characters radiated a passion that made them virtually godlike and irresistibly enviable, even as they struggled not to self-destruct; Iris Murdoch described loves that were so obsessive, and yet so attractive, as to make everything outside of them unreal; and Doris Lessing and Albert Camus seduced me with images of an inner disquiet that made ordinary life seem flat

and not worthwhile. The idea grew in me that it was far nobler to die in unrequited longing than to live in anything else. Better dead in intensity that alive in domestic normalcy. Restlessness was to be encouraged. And much in our culture, especially in the arts and the entertainment industry, foster that temptation, namely, to self-define as restless and to identify this disquiet with depth and with the angst of the artist. Once we define ourselves in this way, as complex, incurable romantics, we have an excuse for being difficult and we also have an excuse for betrayal and infidelity. For now, in the words of a song by The Eagles, we are restless spirits on an endless flight. Understandably, then, we fly above the ordinary rules for life and happiness and our complexity is justification enough for whatever ways we act out. As Amy Winehouse famously self-defines: “I told you I was troubled, and you know that I’m no good.” Why should anyone be mystified by our refusal of normal life and ordinary happiness? There’s something inside us, particularly when we are young, that tempts us towards that kind of self-definition. And, for that time in our lives, when we’re young, I believe, it’s healthy. The young are supposed to overly-idealistic, incurably romantic, and distrustful of any lazy fall into settling for second-best. As Doris Lessing puts it, there’s only one real sin in life and that’s calling second-best by anything other than what it is, second-best! My wish is that all young people would read Plato, Augustine, John of the Cross, Karl Rahner, Nikos Kazantzakis, Iris Murdoch, Doris Lessing, Jane Austin, and Albert Camus. But, except for authors such as Plato, Augustine, John of the Cross and Karl Rahner, who integrate that insatiable restlessness and existential angst into a bigger, meaningful narrative, we should be weary of defining ourselves as restless and cultivating that. High romanticism will only serve us well if we eventually set it within a self-understanding that doesn’t make restlessness an end in itself. Just feeling noble won’t bring much peace into our lives and, as we age and mature, peace does become the prize. Romeo, Juliet, Hamlet, Zorba the Greek, Doctor Zhivago, and the other such mega-romantic figures on our screens and in our novels can enflame our romantic imaginations, but they aren’t in the end images for the type of intimacy that makes for a permanent

meeting of hearts inside the body of Christ. Oblate Father Ron Rolheiser

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS

The Theologian

The relationship of faith and reason is under intense scrutiny in an age beholden to the competing claims of fundamentalism and secularism. So called “new atheists” insist that the claims of religion amount to mere superstition, a retrograde holdover from a time long ago. Others insist that the life of faith is a retreat into emotions and subjectivism. St. Thomas Aquinas anticipated these objections and trends and demonstrated that to believe is to think and that the life of the mind is integral to
