Dear Parishioners, Today the Youth Catechesis Council is hosting an Appreciation Luncheon for the catechists and volunteers of our Youth Catechesis program. We have over 190 women and men who faithfully volunteer to teach religion to 1,080 parish children who participate in our program. The YC staff, consisting of the Director, Janet Caschetta, and the Grade Level Coordinators, Deb Pusinelli, Barb Campbell and Cathy Mahoney, gives tremendous support of lesson plans, resources for the classroom, creative ideas and tons of organizing for every session. The office support personnel, Liz Clawson, Kathy Steider and Mary Jamrozik, are the unsung heroes behind the scenes who answer the phones, enter the data, welcome the visitors to the office and are the extra hands for all the last minute details. The YC program is strengthened and improved every year. Most classes have two catechists who share responsibility for the class. Some are friends who volunteer together. Some are high school students who are matched with adult volunteers. Becoming a certified catechist, approved by the archdiocese, is a real commitment to religious education and personal growth. One of the best kept secrets of ministry is that the minister gets more out of it than those being ministered to, and I think almost every catechist would agree that is what happens with them. They are the teachers but frequently say they learn more than the students. It’s the best of volunteerism that helps others and at the same time helps the volunteer grow in their faith. I am very grateful today to the Men’s Club cooks and Confirmation students who are helping with our Appreciation Luncheon and all those who express gratitude to this great group of parishioners who run the religious education program. Truly, without them we could not do it. If you’ve never been a part of it, start thinking now how you might be able to fit it into your already busy schedule for next year. You’ll never regret it. There is a perfect place waiting for you. Beginning next Saturday and the following Saturday 197 second graders will make their First Holy Communions. We try to be as ‘family friendly’ as possible and offer four different time periods on those two weekends for families to choose what fits their schedule best. Another option, if those days and times are not possible or preferred, is that any child can receive Holy Communion at any of the Sunday Masses during the Easter season. (In some parishes all of the First Communicants receive with their families at a Sunday liturgy.) Invariably, no matter when or how it is celebrated, First Communion is a time of great anticipation for the children and a family milestone accompanied by great celebration. Please keep these children and their parents in your prayers. It is a grace to see the Body of Christ welcome new members to the Table of the Lord. The Easter seasons continues to unfold each week. Three weeks from now is the Ascension, four weeks is Pentecost. Let the rich Easter scriptures feed your faith and may the sacrament of unity bind us all to one another. Peace, Fr. David

Discovering Your True Self Through Prayer “Second half of life” wisdom requires prayer and discernment more than knee- jerk responses toward e i ther conservative or liberal ends of the spectrum. You have a spectrum of responses now, and they are not all predictable, as is too often the case with most knee-jerk responses. Law is still necessary, of course, but it is not your guiding star, or even close. It has been wrong and cruel too many times. The Eight Beatitudes speak to you m u c h m o r e t h a n t h e T e n Commandments as you grow older. Life is much more spacious now. The boundaries of the container have been enlarged. You are like an expandable suitcase, and you became so almost without your noticing. Now you are just here, and here holds more than enough. Starter Prayer: Teach me to pray. Living the Gospel Jesus has proven his trustworthiness as a good Shepherd. He has already laid down his life for the sheep. He has done this freely in response to the Father’s command and love. What is the command Jesus received from his Father? That he be the Good Shepherd by laying down his life for his sheep. That he gather all people into one flock by laying down his life for his sheep. We, Jesus’ disciples, receive the same command from him. In the Father’s love we too gather all people into one flock by laying down our lives for others. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. So are we to be. The challenge of the Gospel, of course, is that Jesus’ being our Good Shepherd doesn't save us from the hard work of the Gospel call—to lay down our own lives. Even in Easter joy we are reminded that following Jesus as his disciples has two faces: both dying to self as well as rising to new life in Christ. Laying down his life isn’t just something Jesus does; it’s also what his disciples do. Loving completely and everlastingly isn’t just what the Father and Jesus do; it’s also what his disciples do. The Gospel also spells out for us how we are to lay down our life: by leading, protecting, guiding, knowing, loving. Our Christian living, then, is about relating to others as the Father and Good Shepherd have related to us. The Gospel uses “love” as a way to describe the community and unity between the Father and Jesus, between God and us, and among ourselves. If our relationship with Jesus is so lovingly intimate, then we share that same love and intimacy with each other. This is how we are all “one flock.” This is how we share in bringing salvation to others: by loving others with the same intimacy and self-giving as the Father and Jesus love us.

Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection

I am the good shepherd. Mary saw a sign about openings at Catholic Charities’ senior housing. She was a 68-year old nurse’s aid doing back-breaking work to make ends meet and avoid burdening her children. She wanted to retire, but her budget wouldn’t allow it. She was accepted for an apartment paying only 30% of her income for rent. Her new affordable housing allowed her to retire and live comfortably with her social security benefits.

My dear friends at St. John of the Cross Parish, Happy Easter! I hope that this Easter Season is a joyous one for you. I am writing, as in past years, to seek your help. I’ve now been here at St. Edmund Parish in Oak Park for almost eight years. It doesn’t seem nearly that long since I was your associate pastor—six years that I remember with great fondness. St. Edmund’s is a very diverse parish. We have parishioners from all over the world who worship with us. Our diversity includes racial and ethnic background, various cultures and socioeconomic statuses. We are not a wealthy parish and although we have made great strides at getting our fiscal house in order, we still have far to go. As our annual parish fundraiser approaches, I am writing to seek your support. Our fundraiser income is budgeted as operating income. It isn’t used for any extras, but simply to make ends meet. I know that you have demands on your spending and that times are tough. I must admit that it is difficult to ask, but might you consider supporting our fundraiser? “ Catholic Charities Shelter Should be Your TARGET! “ “This is how all will know you are My disciples, your love for one another…” John 13: 34, 35. Located on Chicago’s south side, St. Francis DePaula Shelter is one of Catholic Charities’ two interim housing shelters serving families who have unexpectedly become homeless. Generally, a family spends three or four months at St. Francis DePaula. During that time, they receive intensive case management services where each family works with a case manager to create a plan, identify goals, develop life and parenting skills and find job opportunities and other necessary resources. For each family, the ultimate goal is permanent housing and self-sufficiency -- but that can only happen after their immediate needs of food and shelter are addressed! St. Francis DePaula Shelter is capable of serving 14 families at one time. Last fiscal year (July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011), St. Francis DePaula Shelter provided an astounding 16,092 nights of stay and 48,282 meals to 338 parents and children. Located in a former convent that was built in the late 1920s, St. Francis DePaula Shelter has been in continuous operation 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, year round since 1984 causing significant wear and tear. Fortunately, the Shelter is

currently undergoing a renovation of the common areas of the facility, including the kitchen and dining room. That is where you come in!!! We have set up a registry on Target.com where you can go online and purchase items needed for the new kitchen and dining room. These needy families should feel at home . . . even when they don’t have one. The Registry is simple: (1) Go to Target.com; (2) Click on TargetLists; (3) Enter the first name “Christina” and the last name “Brotto”; (4) Start shopping. All of your purchases will be delivered to the Parish Center. When the Shelter remodel is complete, we will arrange to have all of the purchases delivered to the Shelter. Knitters and Crocheters Needed

The Prayer Shawl Ministry regularly makes and gives shawls to those who are ill or going through any of life's difficulties, as well as sending shawls to Dover Delaware for the

families of fallen service men and women. If you would like to participate in this meaningful ministry, you would be welcome. We meet the second Wednesday each month at 1 p.m. in the Parish Center. If you are unable to attend meetings, but would like to contribute a shawl, we would be happy to pick it up. The next meeting is Wednesday, May 9 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Parish Center. To Live In The Light Several years ago, I was approached by man who asked me to be his spiritual director. He was in his mid-forties and almost everything about him radiated a certain health. As we sat down to talk, I mentioned that he seemed to be in a very good space. He smiled and replied that, yes, this was so, but it hadn't always been so. His happiness had its own history ... and its own pre-history. Here's how he told his story: "I haven't always been in a good space in my life; in fact, it's been a long struggle to get where I am today. For more than 20 years, from the time I left high school until three years ago, I struggled with two addictions: alcohol and sex. I had them enough under control that I could essentially hide them from my family, my friends, and my colleagues. As well I never acted out in very dangerous ways. I was addicted, but still had good control in my life. The problem was that I was living a double life - showing one life to my family and friends and living another life secretly (alcohol, pornography, and pick-up bars) on the side. I never once missed a day of work and was always able to function at a high level professionally, but my life slowly began to fixate around my addictions - hiding them, lying about my activities, fiercely protecting my privacy, resentment towards anything or anybody who stood between me and my addictions, and daily anxiety, scheming about where I would go at night. I functioned decently within my work and my relationships, but my mind, heart, and real attention were focused on something else, my addictions, my next hit. I'm not sure what the exact trigger was since there were a number of things that hit me at a point (my father's death, a couple of near escapes in terms of being discovered, some real shame, some graced moments of clarity when I sensed both my hypocrisy and the dead-end road I was on), but three years ago I went on a retreat to a monastery and had the courage to have a long talk with the Abbott. He suggested that I go into two recovery programs, one to deal with alcohol and the other to deal with sex. I took his advice and all I can say is that it has completely turned my life around. I've been "sober" now for three years and the best way that I can describe it is that now "I see color again". Nothing feels as great as honesty! I have never been this happy! I'm now living in the light! We're called to live in the light, but we tend to have an overly romantic idea of what that should mean. We tend to think that to live in the light means that

there should be a kind of special sunshine inside of us, a divine glow in our conscience, a sunny joy inside us that makes is constantly want to praise God, an ambience of sacredness surrounding our attitude. But that's unreal. What does it mean to live in the light? To live in the light means to live in honesty, pure and simple, to be transparent, to not have part of us hidden as a dark secret. All conversion and recovery programs worthy of the name are based on bringing us to this type of honesty. We move towards spiritual health precisely by flushing out our sickest secrets and bringing them into the light. Sobriety is more about living in honesty and transparency than it is about living without a certain chemical, gambling, or sexual habit. It's the hiding of something, the lying, the dishonesty, the deception, the resentment we harbor towards those who stand between us and our addiction, that does the real damage to us and to those we love. Spiritual health lies in honesty and transparency and so we live in the light when we are willing to lay every part of our lives open to examination by those who need to trust us. · To live in the light is to be able always to tell our loves ones where we are and what we are doing. · To live in the light is not have to worry if someone traces what websites we have visited. · To live in the light is to not be anxious if someone in the family finds our files unlocked. · To live in the light is to be able to let those we live with listen to what's inside our cell-phones, see what's inside our emails, and know who's on our speed-dial. · To live in the light is to have a confessor and to be able to tell that person what we struggle with, without having to hide anything.
