Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I congratulate those adults who were participants in our parish RCIA this year, as they receive their Confirmation (and in some cases their First Holy Communion) at this weekend’s 10:30am and 12:30pm Masses. I have been delegated by Bergen Regional Bishop John Flesey to confirm: Flor Bedoya, Jimmy Flores, Jazmine Garcia, Kelsey Lapp, Juana Landestoy, Christopher Leuffgen, Maryen Muñoz, Jennifer Pantoja, Allen Robles, and Jenny Rose. We expect that all will continue to be regular churchgoers and find themselves active in one or more of our parish ministries!

+++ Thank you to all those who continue to make their pledges to our “We Are Living Stones” Capital Campaign. We remain the leader of all the parishes in the Archdiocese in Phase 1 of this Campaign, with pledges of over 63% of our goal of $1,066,452.00. Pledges may be dropped off at the rectory, placed in the collection basket, or sent directly to the Archdiocese. Please consider making a sacrificial pledge payable over four years or a special gift as your means allow and as your trust in God directs. Be counted among the loving and generous members of our parish community to help us provide for ongoing care for our parish buildings and the people like you who use them so often!

+++

Once again, I offer sincere thanks on behalf of the countless victims of the earthquake in Nepal to all those who contributed to their aid. Let us also continue to pray for the victims, both living and dead.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

It is sometimes said that Christians are called to be “in the world, but not of the world.” On the one hand, as the Second Vatican Council put it, “The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ” (Gaudium et Spes, n. 1). Christians share the good things and bad things of life with all other people of the world; they do not live in a sealed-off enclave. On the other hand, Christians look in hope to a reality that goes beyond what the world can offer: “we have come to know and believe in the love God has for us.” The Gospel of John speaks of hostility between the followers of Jesus and “the world.” This does not refer to hostility between Christians and their fellow human beings. Rather, it refers to the way in which a worldview that rejects the truth of the love that God has for us is at odds with the way in which Christians understand the joys, hopes, griefs, and anxieties that all people share. “The world,” as John uses the term, sees the joys and hopes of life as something in limited supply that can only be attained through power, and life’s griefs and anxieties as something that other people suffer so that we don’t have to. As such, Christians do not belong to the world for “the world” in this sense is fundamentally at odds with Christian faith in God’s love. That love leads Christians to embrace the griefs and anxieties of others, so as to share with them their hope for the complete joy that comes from God. “Help us to remain in you, Lord Jesus, so that we may fully embrace life in all of its joy and hope, as well as its grief and anxiety.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.” I John 4: 15

How strong is your faith? When you have an opportunity to defend your faith or clarify a question about your faith, do you do it? Or do you remain silent so that others don’t think you are weird? Pray for the courage to be strong in your faith and share your witness with others.
