Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,,
Work continues on our Grotto project behind the Parish Life Center. The tree has been removed, the plans have been drawn, we are in the process of getting an up to date survey, and we continue to raise money to complete this project by springtime. Please take note of the sketch in the main church, and if you would like to be included in our Memorial Brick Campaign, please use one of the forms at the exits of the church to record your information and return it with payment to the rectory. I hope many of you will want to be part of this historic project to provide some beautiful and functional outdoor meditation space. Though understood in a variety of ways over the centuries, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception was officially proclaimed as an infallible doctrine of the Church in 1854. We believe that Mary was conceived in the womb of her mother, Anne, free from original sin. Christ is the unique mediator of our salvation. Mary, as the first of those redeemed by the grace of Christ, received the most radical form of holiness possible: to be preserved from all sin from the very beginning of her existence, so that she might be free to say “yes” to God and to fulfill perfectly her role as mother of God incarnate. May she be for us a model of the holiness that the grace of Christ makes possible. Friday we observe the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas and of the unborn. A special Mass in Spanish will be celebrated in the Main Church at 8:15pm. (English Masses follow the regular weekday schedule.) While every parishioner is important, and any death is significant, I would be remiss if I did not say a few words about former parishioner Henry Schilling who died last week and was buried through Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Maywood where he was residing with one of his children. Predeceased earlier this year by his wife, Helen, they were active members of St. John’s for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society, Lazarus Team, Usher, Money Counter, and general helper and ambassador of good will. May he rest in peace!
Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor
Reflection on Today’s Readings
The prophet Isaiah seems to presume that God’s people have something to shout about. Isaiah’s injunction to “cry out at the top of your voice” can come as something of a challenge to the reticence that many Catholics in the United States seem to feel about speaking publicly about their faith. While we do not want to be obnoxious in sharing the Good News of Christ, we are called to speak with a certain boldness and confidence that come, not from ourselves, but from our faith in the God who comes in power. John the Baptist is presented in our Gospel as a model of one who boldly cries out to proclaim the coming of God. John makes his proclamation with words - “One mightier than I is coming after me” - but also with symbolic actions: his clothing and diet, which conjure images of the prophets of the Old Testament, as well as his ritual of baptism, which speaks eloquently of the need for conversion and purification. John’s whole being, his words and his actions, cry out loudly of the coming of God. The Second Letter of Peter also calls us to live in a way that proclaims our hope in the coming of God, bidding us to live our daily lives in “holiness and devotion.” We might not think of holiness and devotion as particularly loud forms of proclamation, but if you devote yourself entirely to a life of holiness, putting your all into the love and service of God and neighbor, then you really are crying out “at the top of your voice.” “Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with a joy that we cannot hold in. Fill us as the breath that accompanies the words we speak, so that all that we say and do might proclaim our faith in God. Amen.”
Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!
“Prepare the way of the Lord...” Mark 1: 3
We are all called to live a holy life. We are all called to invite others to live holy lives. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gifts, does just that—it puts us on the path to holiness and it invites others to be holy, too.

Missalette & Hymnal in One! Our English Missalette & Hymnal has now been combined into one annual edition, Breaking Bread with Daily Mass texts. You will find it correctly inserted into the old cover, with its own front cover visible, not tucked in. Please do not try to force the front cover into the outer cover. This annual single edition will save our parish money and reduce the amount of trash (albeit recyclable) that the seasonal issues generated. The Spanish annual missalette has been added with the permanent Flor y Canto hymnal in the burgundy covers. A combination edition such as the English currently does not exist, but is still better with the permanent hymnal.
