Masculinity & Femininity: Difference and Gift Please join Columbus Catholic High School and Middle School students at Our Lady of Peace Church on Wednesday, October 16th at 1:30pm for this presentation given by Sr. Jane Dominic Laurel of the Nashville Dominicans. Media and popular culture promote gender confusion. As Catholics, we know that God created us male and female for a reason: our bodies, psyches, and biochemistry differ because our vocations differ. Only by rediscovering our identity as either male or female can we discover the gift of our lives and the genuine happiness that comes from living according to either the masculine or the feminine mode of loving. Parents as well as any members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend. White Mass Event Attention all physicians, nurses, dentists, and pharmacists. The Marshfield Guild of the Catholic Medical Association, in addition to St. John’s, Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital, and the Knights of Columbus will be hosting the Diocesan White Mass on Wednesday, October 16th. Bishop Callahan will preside at the Mass at 5:00pm at St. John’s, followed by dinner at St. Joseph’s Hospital at the Mother Francis Streidel Center at 6:30pm. Speaker Ben Nguyen will give a presentation on “Understanding Catholic Identity in Healthcare Organizations - Challenges and Opportunities”. The White Mass is held annually near the Feast of St. Luke, patron of physicians, to pray with and for the medical community. For more information, please contact Allyson Mayeux at [email protected] or Pat Sullivan at [email protected]. Registration for the dinner event is required but the Mass is open to all who are interested. CCS Corner Small class sizes allowing for individual attention, dedicated faculty, and a rigorous core curriculum lead to academic excellence at Columbus Catholic Schools. At St. John Primary and OLP Intermediate school 2-5th grade students scored a composite average in the 96th percentile on standardized tests and Columbus Middle school was at the 92nd percentile. ACT scores just released put Columbus at a 26, well above the state average of 22.1 and the National average of 20.9. Columbus Catholic parents can have peace of mind knowing that our schools will shape their child into well-educated adults, equipped to succeed, and grounded in morals and faith of the church. Future Success starts here. Call 715-387-2444 for more information about Columbus Catholic Schools.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Praised be Jesus Christ! Now that the Diocesan Annual Appeal is underway, I thought it would be a good idea to let you know how things look in terms of our parish finances. It’s been a very busy summer and I’m happy to report that our renovation of the school is nearing its completion. We begin a new era this winter as the building will no longer be fueled by our old boilers. God willing, we’ll see significant savings in terms of heating costs. The last part of the renovation of our school is scheduled to take place next summer when we replace the windows and lights in the older building (i.e. the north building). We’ll also see the main altar restored beginning in late October and completed in time for Christmas. We hope to complete the side altars sometime in the fall of 2014. Thanks to all who have contributed to our “Toward the Altar of God” campaign, we are inching closer to our goal of not only paying for our expenses, but also putting money back into what has always been our parish improvement fund. Thanks to the Parish Pull and the upcoming “Holy Smokes Pig Roast and Gun Raffle”, we’ve been able to raise funds that will further benefit our parish and our school. Other improvements you’ve no doubt noticed have been the ongoing beautification of our grounds. A hard-working team of volunteers worked on a Saturday in June to spruce things up and they did a brilliant job. A couple of others did some more work along the sacristy entrance to the church and it turned out beautifully. We hope to continue to stay on top of things and I’m always grateful when someone says “Father, I’d like to help....” For example, we had a parishioner fix our lawnmower this summer and that benefits both the parish (i.e. saves money) and that parishioner (who stores up treasure in Heaven). One other noticeable repair had to do with our sound system, which was struck by lightning on June 22nd. It has been a work in progress ever since and I am grateful for your patience. Presently I am entertaining some bids for the day that the system needs to be replaced, but I am praying that that will be years from now. I apologize that the speakers underneath the choir loft were not working, but thankfully they have been fixed. And now that we’ve taken care of some of the pressing needs of our own parish family, it’s time to think about reaching out to others who are also in need. What I love about the Diocesan Annual Appeal is that it gives us the opportunity to do something for people that may not be able to thank us – and this really refines our motives and makes our gift even more pure and beautiful in God’s eyes. Helping our own family is a duty and a source of joy, and sometimes we are thanked and praised for doing this. Helping complete strangers who have genuine needs likely means that my charity is without any strings attached and this is a benefit to all who participate in the Diocesan Annual Appeal. As proud as I am of this parish for taking care of our own needs, I am equally proud of the fact that St. Johns always does its part to make the Diocesan Annual Appeal a great gift to all the people served by our Bishop and the Diocese of La Crosse. In advance, I want to thank you for the gift you give so that others may find joy in this world! May God continue to bless you with a generous and cheerful heart! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin Marshfield Area Youth Rally: September 22nd, 6-9pm All teens are invited to gather at Wildwood Pavilion for a huge rally of Christian faith. This is a great way to kick off the new year. See You at the Pole Rally & Prayer Day: On September 25th join millions of teens across the nation for this special day of prayer. Gather at the flag pole of public schools 30 minutes before the start of school to pray for your school, teachers, parents, friends. Our public schools need a public witness of faith. Rosaries For Sale Oct. 5th-6th to help you celebrate the month of the rosary, there will be a variety of rosaries available after the Masses.

NOTES FROM FR. MARTIN Save the date: Please join us as we host our first annual “Holy Smokes Pig Roast and Gun Raffle” at the KC Public Banquet Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 22nd beginning at 5:00pm. All proceeds will go into our “Toward the Altar of God” campaign. We’ll have both a gun raffle (10 high quality hunting rifles) and a silent auction with bucket prizes. If you would like to donate to the silent auction, please contact Jill Hiller at 715-305-6068. Tickets for just the dinner will be $10.00 or $40.00 for families. Should you like a shot at winning the guns or a top-end Weber grill, those tickets will be $20.00 each. This will be another chance to have some fun together as a parish and to raise some money for a great cause. Soon we’ll be asking for volunteers to assist at the event; please consider helping us if you’re able. Coming to a mailbox near you: Diocesan Annual Appeal! By now you should have received your invitation in the mail to support the great work done in the Diocese of La Crosse. Hopefully this letter will encourage you to once again do your part to pass on the Gospel by sacrificial giving. I believe that this is our chance to positively affect more than just the good people in Marshfield. You'll be encouraged to give a little more than last year... whether you give more or less, please pray that the Bishop is able to meet all the needs of his flock through the funding raised by the Annual Appeal. And PLEASE SEND IN YOUR PLEDGE CARD - the Diocese is hoping for 100% response, no matter how big or small the sacrifice! Baptism Class for those requesting the baptism of their children will take place Tuesday, October 1st, 5:30-8:00pm in Schuh Hall. Pre-registration is required and you can do so by calling 715-384-9565 ext 2. For those not registered in the parish, information will be given on how to do so. This class is for all parents of their first child and/or those who have not yet taken Father Martin’s Baptismal class.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH OF CUPERTINO FOR STUDENTS O humble Saint Joseph of Cupertino, singularly favored by God in the difficulties of study and the worries of examinations, implore the Holy Spirit to enlighten my mind and aid my memory in the search of His truth and wisdom. Help me especially in the decisive moments of examination, protecting me from that forgetfulness and disturbing anxiety which often accompany them, so that I may grow in knowledge, love, and wisdom which leads to eternal life. Amen

Prayer Corner: To encourage a deeper celebration of this Year of Faith, I will be running a different prayer in this corner each month. You're very welcome to cut it out and commit it to memory or just put it on your refrigerator or bathroom mirror. This idea surfaced from our education committee and I think it is a good one. Please pray for me while you're at it!

NOTES FROM FR. BURISH Young Adult Ministry: The ministry for young adults of the Marshfield area begun last year will be kicked off again with a social and an Italian pasta dinner (prepared by me!) on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:00pm at the Elderbrook Residence, 428 Meadow Ln, Marshfield. All those post-high school thru those in their 30s are welcome. To ensure there will be enough food, please e-mail Fr. Burish at [email protected] or call the rectory at 715-384-3252 if you plan to attend. As chaplain for Columbus Catholic High School and Middle School, I will be celebrating the weekly all-school Mass at Our Lady of Peace Parish for the students, faculty, and any parents/family who wish to attend. There are no parish Mass intentions assigned to these Masses. If you would like to have one or more of the all-school Masses offered for a deceased loved one please contact me at 715-384-9565.
