SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION

Dear Parishioners,

The Holy Scriptures for today emphasize the importance of prayer and our perseverance in prayer. The woman in the Gospel was of course heard by our Lord and He was going to answer her prayer. But He has this dialogue to teach us that all people have a right to ask and to receive from the Lord. Of course, our prayer must be pure and focused on what is good for us and those for whom we pray.

Fr. Fernandez writes in “Conversations with God”: “St. Augustine relates in his “Confessions” how his mother, Saint Monica, never ceased to implore God for the conversion of her son. Nor did she weary of asking good and wise people to speak to her son to dissuade him from his erroneous ways. One day a holy bishop said to her these words by way of consolation: “Go your way; as sure as you live, it is impossible that the son of these tears should perish.” Much later, Saint Augustine himself was to write: “If I did not perish in error, it was due to the daily tears of my mother, who was so full of faith.” God listens in a special way to the prayer of those who know how to love, even though at times it may appear that He is deaf to the entreaty. He wants our faith to become stronger, our hope to become more profound, and our love to become more trusting. He wants everyone to have the desire and the humility that a good mother has.”

We can all thank our mothers for their great trust in God and their love for us expressed in the daily prayers they offer for us. This mother in the Gospel is a model of prayer for all of us, men and women. God desires our going to Him in trust and confidence. Our prayer must be generous and intercessory for others, not just focused on ourselves. And our prayer must be of adoration, of contrition and of thanksgiving not just supplication. Let us pray for one another with the fervor of the woman in the Gospel and St. Monica, so that we may experience the “house of prayer” as we read in the first reading from Isaiah:

God bless and may our Lady keep you in her care. With my prayers, Father Arnsparger.

“The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, ministering to him, loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants--all who keep the Sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, then I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”

10TH ANNUAL EUCHARISTIC CONGRESSCHARLOTTE, N.C.SEPTEMBER 19 & 20

Our Eucharistic Congress benefits greatly by the kindness of volunteers who generously provide their time and skills to help in many areas, and we still need volunteers to help with the youth tracks, ushering, and at the various speaker's book sales tables. Most shifts are 2 hours or less.  There are several benefits for volunteering:1.  On Friday, September 19, there will be a Mass for volunteers at the Convention Center in the morning, right before the short volunteer training session2.  After the training session, there is a free volunteer buffet lunch3. Usher volunteers will receive a free Eucharistic Congress polo shirt4. Youth track volunteers will receive a free Congress t-shirt5. All volunteers receive free parking vouchers

To register as a volunteer, visit w w w. g o E u ch a r i s t . c o m a n d s e l e c t t h e VOLUNTEER tab; provide your name, email, mailing address, phone number, shirt size (if applicable), and pick a timeslot to volunteer. Volunteer Registration Deadline: Please note that we will close the online registration on August 31, as there are several processes related to volunteers (e.g. volunteer background checks, confirming correct ratio of volunteers for youth tracks, etc.) that must be completed in the 3 weeks prior to the start of the Congress.

APOSTOLATE OF ADORATION FOR PRIESTS

We can see by the increase in violence worldwide against Christins and the Catholic Church, that our priests and bishops are under attack on many fronts. They need our support, particularly through prayer and adoration.

This is a reminder to those generous parishioners who currently offer an hour of prayer and/or adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, once a week or once a month for one of our Diocesan priests or our Bishop, to please continue doing so. For those of us parishioners who would like to join this group of prayer warriors, please do so by contacting Virginia Mechensky, [email protected], giving your name, phone or email, the sacramental gift you are able to offer, the priest’s name (or the bishop).

Prayer is our greatest defense against this

anti-Christian movement; and prayer before

the Blessed Sacrament is a weapon

no force can defeat.

ST. JOHN WOMEN’S GROUP“CONVERSION — FOLLOWING THE CALL OF CHRIST”

The Women’s Group will gather together again this fall starting Tuesday, September 9, 2014. Ladies of the parish are invited to explore Fr. Robert Barron’s, Conversion series. “Father Robert Barron illuminates six Biblical stories of conversion, demonstrating how six ordinary people, just like you, were met by Jesus where they were and called to a better life through Him. The common theme in each story is the turning of all one's attention and energy toward an ever deeper, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.”

“The struggle of Christian life is the struggle of conversion, directed toward holiness and eternal life to which the Lord never ceases to call us."

— Catechism of the Catholic Church (1426)

RCIA’s first meeting is this Monday evening at 7pm in the parish center. Are you or someone you know interested in the Catholic faith? If so, we invite you, your friend, neighbor or family member to join us for an evening of ‘inquiry’ regarding the faith and the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation) Journey. Give thanks to God as He continuously strengthens each of us who seek to do His will in offering a gentle, humble, and clear welcome to the Catholic faith. If you know of someone who may be interested in the life changing journey of RCIA, invite them to attend the RCIA meeting.

— “Go out into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)

ATTENTION ALL YOUTH, TEENS & PARENTS OF FAITH FORMATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY PROGRAMS

In order to provide a positive, proper and respectful environment for studying our Faith, all youth and teens in Faith Formation and Youth Ministry programs are to be modest in their speech, dress and behavior. To be modest is to be free from conceit and vanity and is to be humble and respectful, not only to self but to others. As we begin a new year in our programs, all youth are expected to be respectful in their attire. Our Bishop, Most Reverend Peter J. Jugis, JCD addressed modesty and dress a homily at a prior Eucharistic Congress. He noted how wonderful it is to see our youth dress in their “finest” for the Sacrament of Confirmation and encourages them and all of us to do the same for the Holy Mass and the Blessed Sacrament. So again, when attending Mass ALL are encouraged to wear his/her ‘Sunday best’. However, for FF classes and Youth Group attire (clothing) may be casual but should always be respectful: • Length of shorts should be mid-thigh or longer• No “cutoff ” shorts• No tank tops or spaghetti strap tops• No inappropriate wording or pictures on clothing• If in doubt, choose something else!•All clothing (male/female) should be modest as befits honoring the body and reverencing God. Remember, at the conclusion of each Faith Formation class, we go to visit our Lord, Jesus Christ, present in the Blessed Sacrament exposed during Adoration. We thank you for your cooperation, efforts and desire to give honor to our Lord at all times and to provide a respectful environment in and for the parish.

WHAT IS RCIA?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process established for the universal Church for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. This initiation process also involves a parish community experiencing a renewal in faith as it prepares and welcomes new members into the Church. The Rite speaks of conversion as a “spiritual journey.” Centered on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the Church he founded, this journey takes place through distinct stages over a period of time suitable to bring about a thorough catechesis, significant experience of the parish community, and commitment to the liturgical and moral life of the Catholic faithful. The RCIA process is a restoration of the ancient catechumenate, arising within the first three centuries following the era of the apostles. It was the early Church’s way of Christianizing the pagan Roman Empire. The Second Vatican Council called for the restoration and use of this venerable and powerful method of initiation for the worldwide Church.
