Notes From The Pastor’s Desk

WWW.SJBDE.ORGJUNE 25, 2017 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

It takes courage to be a follower of Christ. In too many places Christians are being martyred by radical religious groups and Christian values are being jeopardized because standing for the Lord triggers the worse in those who cannot fathom why we should be serious in allowing God to determine our lives. Being pious, chaste and uninfluenced by the culture is difficult for everyone especially our youth.

And so, like the prophet Jeremiah in the first reading, we trust in the Lord to protect us. Jesus said in today’s Gospel, “Fear no one”; but be concerned about losing your soul. God is aware of the times we say, “No, that’s wrong.” Or simply, “No, that’s not my style.” God is aware of the times that we stay away from certain people and places. He is aware of how we are treated by some when we give witness to Him.

We hate to be mocked, but we have to recognize that good is always going to be opposed by evil. We need not be afraid. When we stand up for that which is holy, the Lord wins the battle for us. We may not advance as quickly with the “in circle” but God is aware of our commitment to His Life, our witness to Him. Surely, God will acknowledge all those who do not disown Him. Do what is right and God will do the rest.

The 2017 Diocesan Annual Appeal is progressing very well throughout the diocese. Our parish of Saint John the Beloved has $164,000 presently pledged toward our $179,000 goal. If you have not made a pledge thus far, please

consider making one. Blue envelopes are available at the entrances of the church. Any contribution is greatly appreciated and will help our parish make our target. Thank You!

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

A Journey to the Heart of the Faith…

For centuries the words of Jesus have fascinated, challenged, disturbed, puzzled, and captivated millions of people. Was Jesus God in the flesh, the incarnate Word, as our faith teaches? Or was he, as many believe today, just a good and holy man, one ethical guide, or teacher, or spiritual guru among many? Where do you stand? How do you answer that question? For sure Jesus cannot be known by choosing only those words and actions of his that are appealing, or just following those Church teachings that are comfortable, while ignoring everything else. If Jesus is God then he deserves our devotion our worship and our attention. This is where RCIA, the process to become Catholic, comes in. We invite you to join with us to explore our Church’s teaching about Jesus Christ and participate in the upcoming journey to a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith. For more information contact Deacon Tom Bailey at 302-559-6458, or the parish office. Or you can visit the RCIA page on the parish website, www.sjbde.org.

The 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal was conducted in all diocesan parishes the weekend of April 29 and 30. St. John the Beloved is truly blessed with many generous people, who, despite many economic challenges, have supported this year’s campaign with their pledges and gifts. To date, $164,007 has been received representing 91.62% of our parish’s $179,000 goal. If you have given to this year’s campaign, please know that your participation is gratefully appreciated. If you have not yet done so, please consider supporting this important effort with a pledge or one-time contribution. Annual Appeal pledge cards are available (location). The diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal provides financial support that enables more than thirty ministries throughout our diocese to bring a glimpse of God into the lives of many. The Appeal is an effective way for the diocese to advance the mission of Christ: to feed and house the poor; to minister to the sick and discouraged; to educate our young; and encourage strong, healthy families. If you would like more information about the Annual Catholic Appeal, go to www.cdow.org and click on Giving - Annual Catholic Appeal. May God bless you for your goodness!

Support St. John the Beloved without leaving your home - and it doesn't cost you any additional money. We are now a participant in the Amazon Smile program. You can designate St. John's as the Charity you support, and every time you purchase something on Amazon a percentage of your order will be donated to St. John's from Amazon. Just go to smile.amazon.com and click the link on the charity you are supporting and search for: St. John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church; Location: Wilmington, DE

Thank you to the SJB Athletic Association and anyone who volunteered to make the 2017 SJB Carnival a great success!  The carnival requires an incredible amount of planning and work which benefits our Parish and Athletic Association.  Thank you again!

MARRIAGE MOMENTS In marriage, there are certain things that you can “agree to disagree” on and others that you absolutely must agree upon. For example, you must agree that your marriage is a top priority and you will do whatever is necessary to strengthen in.

VOCATIONS

INSPIRE

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Matthew’s gospel message this week provides us with hope and comfort as Christ tells us be not afraid. During times of persecution we should reflect on this passage, for it is here that Christ reassures us. It is through our acknowledgment of Him, that He acknowledges us to the Father. We should never be afraid to acknowledge the truth of our faith to others. How often

does our fear hold us back? Are we afraid of what others might think of us? Are we afraid that we might be ridiculed for our faith? Remember the words of Jesus and be not afraid, speak His name and spread His truth to all that will listen. What are you doing to show the world that you are not afraid?

In today’s psalm response, we pray “Lord, in your great love, answer me.” The Lord beckons to us, too, inviting us to answer Him out of love. Each of us is chosen; each of us is called. If you think He might be calling you to priesthood or religious life, and if you’d like some company on the way to answering Him, call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113 or [email protected]). Be sure to visit our

PARENTING POINTERS

Just feeling grateful should not end the story. Act on it! Make a deal with your child. Each of you think of a person that did something you were grateful for and promise to tell that person.

GENERAL INTERCESSIONS

In whispers God speaks to the hearts of many, bless our local Church with many more vocations who are willing to proclaim the Gospel from the rooftops, we pray to the Lord!
