SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES–
Mon—The Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary
Tue— St. Stephen of Hungary
Fri— St. John Eudes, Priest
Sat— St. Bernard, Abbot and Doctor of The Church
THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY–
The church has always held to the belief that Mary was assumed,
body and soul, into a heavenly state, even though the belief was
not declared as dogmatic until 1950. The early church had a
robust tradition of revering relics from the saints of the day, and
their complete lack of relics from the Mother of Jesus was seen as
evidence of this Marian belief. The celebration of the event as a
feast dates back to the fourth century in the East and the seventh
century in the West. Since Mary was untouched by the stain of
sin, she was unable to experience the "wages of sin," which is
death. But her Assumption also says something about humanity as
well. Sin only has power over us if we allow it. Mary was freed
from this power in her Immaculate Conception, and when she
responded "yes" to God. We were freed from that power when
Jesus died and rose, conquering death. Now, we must respond
"yes" to claim the victory that was already won for us. On this
feast, we should not only celebrate the great works God has done
for us through Our Lady, but also celebrate the truth that we have
the opportunity to one day spend eternity with her and her Son,
Jesus. Although this is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year,
there will be an 8:30 AM Holy Mass on Monday, August 15th in
honor of our Blessed Mother.

ARE YOU IN NEED OF THE HEALING
POWER OF JESUS IN THE SACRAMENT OF
THE SICK? Sunday, August 21st at the 10:30 Holy
Mass we will be anointing those who need the
strengthening power of Jesus and the grace of the
Holy Spirit in their time of sickness or notable weakness. Elderly
people (those over 60) may be anointed if they are notably
weakened even though no serious illness is present. This
Sacrament can be received by all baptized who are physically,
emotionally, or spiritually sick; especially children. This
Sacrament is used to comfort the sick in time of anxiety and to
encourage them to fight against illness and perhaps, restore them
to health. The concern of Christ for the bodily and spiritual
welfare of those who are ill is the common responsibility of all
Christians. All can pray and through these prays of
encouragement and faith help the sick to unite themselves with
the sufferings of Christ for the good of God’s people. These
prayers may also lead to healing physically, emotionally, and
spiritually. The letter of St. James states that the sick are to be
anointed in order to raise them up and save them. By the grace of
the Holy Spirit the whole person is sustained by trusting God and
strengthened against the temptations of the evil one and against
anxiety over death. This is a Sacrament to help people live fuller
lives as Jesus said that He came so that we might have life to the
full.
100-MILE POWERWALK- Feel free to sponsor Fr.
Woodruff in his 100-Mile Power Walk. (July 1st –
August 30th) Sponsorship money can be given directly
to Fr. Bill, or you can drop it in the collection basket
with a note indicating the 100-milke walk. Checks are to be made
payable to St. John The Evangelist Church with the memo stating
100-Mile Walk. All monies will be used to offset this year’s
budget deficit. Thank you for the love of your parish.

My Dearest Sisters and Brothers in the Lord Jesus,

books and CDs of the Guided Meditations to be available at the
end of the presentations. Tony would appreciate it if a few
parishioners each night would be available to sell these items.
Tony also has inexpensive bracelets for sale that his Bolivian
street youth made. The youth are supported by his Hope for the
Children Foundation. Tony would want to have the bracelets
available for sale in the lobby after the Mission concludes.
THIRD, THE PARISH MINISTRIES’ FAIR: If a Parish
Mission is spiritually successful, and I have every confidence that
Tony Bellizzi will lead us in a spiritually successful Mission, some
parishioners are moved by God to want to help in one of the parish
ministries that need new volunteers. Therefore, I propose that we
have several of our parish organizations have a table/booth
available after each of the weekend Holy Masses on September
24th/25th manned by one or more current members of each
organization for you to be invited to find out what each
organization does and how you might help in the future. In
consultation with the Parish Council at our last meeting, May 23rd,
we suggest the following parish organizations be available:
Religious Ed; Altar Rosary; Community Action/Food Pantry;
Council of Churches; Liturgy Committee; Outreach/”You Did It
For Me”; Respect Life; 20-Week Club; Advisory Committee for
Parish Development; Music; Family Mass; Church Store; and
Franciscans/Cookie Ministry. Hopefully, we will be able to fit
everyone around the back half of the Church Hall. Please stay
tuned.
Sincerely, with prayers, and God’s blessings,
Father Bill Woodruff
P.S. Father Al and Father Bill extend their prayers to you.

fun time with your fellow parishioners. Bring a lawn chair!
TEN BROECK COMMONS- Is looking for volunteers to assist

outdoors, interacting with them during one of our many activities
or just paying them a visit. If interested, call 336-666 Ext. 5673.
THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY- Is seeking volunteer
drivers to take cancer patients to and from treatment centers –
making phone calls to follow up on requests and remind
constituents of upcoming programs – computer data entry and
word processing – and general office help. Hours are flexible. If
you have a car and can spare some time, call 1-800-ACS-2345.
JOKE– Two elderly ladies were enjoying the sunshine on a park
bench. They had been meeting at that park every sunny day, for
over twelve years, chatting and enjoying each other’s friendship.
One day, the younger of the two ladies, turns to the other and
says, “Please don’t be angry with me, dear; but I am embarrassed.
After all these years, what is your name? I am trying to
remember, but I just can’t.” The older friend stares at her,
looking very distressed, says nothing for two full minutes, and
finally with tearful eyes, says, “How soon do you have to know?”

MAKING ALL THINGS NEW
God our Father, through the Gospel and the Eucharist,
You bring us together as Your Church in the
Archdiocese of New York.
Send us Your Holy Spirit, to enlighten our minds and guide our
actions as we plan for the future of parish life in this
Archdiocese.
Help us learn new ways to strengthen and revitalize our parish
communities, and to be good stewards of the spiritual and
material gifts that sustain them.
Bless our work, so that our parishes may continue to witness to
the truth of the Gospel, and be a sign of Your love for all people.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen. ————————————————
THE CARE AND KEEPING OF THE SOUL
We have only one soul and it will last forever. Like anything
of great value, it needs care and maintenance. A soul in
perfect health is evidenced by a close, prayerful relationship
with God, a sincere desire to do good, frequent reception of
the Sacraments, a dedication to make others’ needs a priority, and a
determination to achieve high levels of holiness. Performing regular
spiritual maintenance keeps us on trace to perfect health.
MONTHLY: Read A good book —Think you struggle with holiness?
Read about St. Augustine, St. Francis, St. Teresa of Avila, or any of the
great saints. You’ll be inspired and encouraged. Spiritual reading is a
great way to grow and challenge ourselves. Develop your own ministry
– While on Earth, Jesus walked among us, giving of Himself and
personally connecting with people. He used his talents for others; He
didn’t keep them for Himself. We are his hands and feet. He asks that
we continue his work serving. What special talents do you have that
can benefit others? It can be as simple as being a friendly face visiting a
homebound neighbor. Do something constructive for your
neighborhood, community, or country each month, or as often as you
can. Meet with a spiritual mentor—Want to be challenged to new
heights of holiness? Find a good spiritual director or mentor who can
help you get there. In many dioceses, there are priests or religious who
act as spiritual directors and will be happy to mentor you to a closer
union with God. Confess monthly –Catholics are only required to go
once a year unless conscious of grave sin, but imagine only filling your
car’s gas tank once a year. Souls need the grace of the sacrament far
more often. Frequent, sincere Confession done right reveals patterns of
sin, helps us to avoid evil, and keeps us focused on pleasing God.
Volunteer for your parish—The Church is dependent upon her people
to keep the doors open an to do her good work. Become an
extraordinary minister of the Eucharist and visit homebound
parishioners, act as an usher at Mass, sing in a choir, clean the church,
help with upkeep of the grounds, teach a religious education class, raise
money for a church cause. Ask at your parish office for suggestions.
