THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY & JOSEPH
My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in the Holy Family of Nazareth,
This is the second of three letters which needed to be
sent into the bulletin publisher at an early date. Once again, it
will be a relatively short letter that I am writing to you.
This weekend, we are celebrating the Feast of the Holy
Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. It happens to fall on its
traditional date of December 30th this year. It is the Sunday
within the Octave (eight days) of Christmas. The Octave of
Christmas is from Christmas Day until the Solemnity of Mary,
Mother of God or January 1st.
Today’s Feast is very near to my heart because my first
priesthood assignment was Holy Family Parish on Staten Island,
which is at the most southern part of our ten county
Archdiocese. I was an Associate Pastor (the Church didn’t have
the term Parochial Vicar in the 1980s) for my first eight years as
a priest from 1982 until 1990. Back then, I had something on my
head they call hair (HA! HA! HA!). May we always imitate the
virtues of the Holy Family in the kind of family life that God has
created.
Also, please pray at Holy Mass on the Holy Day of
Obligation, the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. The
Holy Mass schedule is as follows: 7:00 P.M. on Monday
evening, December 31st; 8:30 and 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday
morning, January 1st. If you are going to be on vacation, please
pray at Holy Mass at the Catholic parish that is near to where
you will be staying.
In addition to January 1st being a Holy Day of
Obligation as well as the conclusion of the Octave of Christmas,
it is also the World Day for Prayer and Peace which was first
declared in 1970 by Pope Saint Paul VI.
Lastly, it is the start of the Year of Our Lord (Anno
Domini) 2019 A.D. It is a time for new spiritual resolutions for
the sake of working out the salvation of our soul.
The Christmas Season continues beyond the Octave
until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ which this
year is Sunday, January 13th. The Christmas Season this year is
as long as it can be which is a total of 20 days.
May I wish you and yours a continued Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year.
Sincerely, with prayers,
Father Bill Woodruff
P.S.: There is no Religious Education Class this coming
Monday, December 31st; classes will resume on Monday
evening, January 7th.
Also, next weekend’s second collection will be for the
combined Catholic Communications and Catholic University. I
want to thank you in advance for your generosity.
I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR
GENEROSITY TO THE PARISH AND TO YOURS TRULY
ALL DURING 2018 A.D.; IN A MULTITUDE OF WAYS,
YOU ARE THE MOST GENEROUS FOLKS I HAVE EVER
HAD THE PLEASURE TO KNOW.
ARCHCARE CARE NAVIGATION CENTER- Getting the
care we need can be a huge challenge. The dedicated team of
health and social service professionals who staff ArchCare’s
Care Navigation Center can provide information about which
organizations and agencies offer the services that best meet your
needs, answer questions about Medicare and Medicaid coverage,
and suggest options you may not even know about. If
ArchCare’s own wide range of services can’t assist, a “Care
Navigator” will be happy to provide information about other
resources located right in your area, including those offered by
Catholic Charities and other groups. Help from a “Care
Navigator” is free of charge, and extends to questions about such
things as: Housing for Seniors and Disabled Persons, Health-
Related Legal and Financial Issues, Caregiver Support Groups,
Access to Healthcare, Food and Nutrition, Dementia Care,
Transportation Options, and Volunteer Opportunities. FMI, call
(855) 951-CARE, 8 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week To learn
more, visit www.archcare.org/communityresources.
CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE- Take a visit and check out St.
John’s website. The Web Address is www.sjechurch.org.
COOKIE MINISTRY- This is a prayer ministry with a cookie
reward up front. Stop by our table at the back of the church each
week. Just pick up a prayer request and a cookie and pray at
least one prayer for the person or intention on the paper. You
are invited to add your own prayer requests to the basket.
CLYNK- You can recycle your clean 5 cent returnable
containers, help the environment, and HELP RAISE
MONEY FOR ST. JOHN’S. It’s simple: Fill a green
Clynk Bag (found at the entrances of the church), then
bring the bag to the Hannaford Lobby, where you scan
it and drop it in the shoot. That’s it! All proceeds go to our
parish! Also, consider bringing a Clynk Bag to your place of
employment and recycle their bottles for our church as well. If
you have any questions, contact Denise Dudzic at 750-8510.
CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS- Every day in this country,
nearly 9,000 children are reported abused and neglected, over 170
in Ulster County alone. Many of these children are eventually
placed into the foster care system. Court Appointed Special
Advocates (CASA) of Ulster County is helping to make a positive
impact in the lives of these children by training volunteers to
speak on behalf of their best interest. By working one-on-one,
volunteers become well-acquainted with each child’s situation
and present recommendations to the court for placement, ensuring
that judges are equipped to make informed decisions. This is
your chance to make a difference in the life of a child living in
your community. All you need is 10-15 hours a month and a
willing heart. If you are interested, please contact 339-7543.
RIDDLE– What is greater than God and more evil than
Satan? Rich people need it, poor people have it, and if
you eat it you will die? Nothing

MAKING ALL THINGS NEW
God our Father, through the Gospel and the Eucharist,
You bring us together as Your Church in the
Archdiocese of New York.
Send us Your Holy Spirit, to enlighten our minds and guide our
actions as we plan for the future of parish life in this Archdiocese.
Help us learn new ways to strengthen and revitalize our parish
communities, and to be good stewards of the spiritual and
material gifts that sustain them.
Bless our work, so that our parishes may continue to witness to
the truth of the Gospel, and be a sign of Your love for all people.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES
It was the day after Christmas at a church in San
Francisco. Pastor Mike was looking at the nativity scene outside
when he noticed the baby Jesus was missing from the figures.
Immediately, Pastor Mike turned towards the church to
call the police. But as he was about to do so, he saw little Jimmy
with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the little
infant, Jesus.
Pastor Mike walked up to Jimmy and said, “Well,
Jimmy, where did you get the little infant?”
Jimmy replied, “I got him from the church.”
“And why did you take him?”
With a sheepish smile, Jimmy said, “Well, about a week
before Christmas I prayed to little Lord Jesus. I told him if he
would bring me a red wagon for Christmas, I would give him a
ride around the bock in it.”

PARISHIONER’S COMMENT– Giving is not a demand or
law placed on our lives by some external force. Giving of
ourselves—our time, talent and treasure—is an inward need… a
law written upon our hearts, imprinted in our gene code.
PASTOR’S COMMENT– We are grateful to all who have
been so generous to God and His Church.
