    Pastors Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our Parish and its co-sponsored Transfiguration Academy have entered into a lease agreement with the Church of the Korean Martyrs in Saddle Brook and its St. Andrew Kim Korean School beginning February 1st. Their Korean School has operated for several years in one of the school buildings of St. Cecelias Parish in Englewood. When St. Cecelias School closed last year, the parish found a tenant who would take over more of their building more often, leaving the Korean School in much more restricted space. With the help of the Archdiocesan Office of Property Management, I was able to meet with Fr. Don Bosco Park and the administrators, and together we forged a lease for the next two and a half years or so. They will use many of our school and annex classrooms on Friday late afternoons/early evenings and Saturday mornings during the school year, and occasionally use Conlon Hall and other parish buildings for cultural days and graduation ceremonies. Income that we realize from this lease will help us pay current and historical billing for insurance, health, and pension benefits on behalf of the Academy to the Archdiocese. Everyone wins in this situation! Msgr. Richard Arnhols

    Reflection on Todays Gospel

The story of the Three Kings or Three Wise Men was probably a kind of haggadah or popular Jewish story fashioned from diverse bibilical material intended to make a spiritual rather than historical point. This does not mean that the story is not true. It means that the truth of it is more in the total story and its meaning than in any or all of its details. The point of the story is that these men were not Israelite, but they were nonetheless open to and in search of Gods plan. The story illustrates that people of good will, regardless of their ethnic or religious background, can be responsive to the revelation of God. These men searched for and found the child, and they did not go away disappointed. A spiritual mentor once said, If there werent any Wise Men, there should have been. This was at a time when a storys truth was equated with its being factual. The story of the Wise Men is true, whether it is factual in its details or not. From the beginning of time, there have been those who have been searching for truth or light or other divine signals. This journey often begins when something in our world catches the attention of those looking up or out from themselves, glimpsing a star beckoning. The truth behind the story of the Wise Men affirms that God sends out signals for searchers to pick up on and move further down the road that will take them to God. Sometimes we might get lost for a while, our internal GPS ceasing to function because we have made a sudden turn or gone past a suggested turn-off. But, then, in a moment of grace, we hear a welcome recalculating, and we are off on our way once again. Even when darkness covers the earth and thick clouds cover the people, the One we are searching for is present, and will not let us go off the trail completelyat least not for long, and eventually, in Gods good time, we will find our way. The light will return and the Lords glory will shine upon all seekers and searcherseven some not much interested in seeking or searching. These, especially, are the ones the Son of Man came to save. Jesus, send the guiding light we all need to find you. Sometimes there is only darkness and we grow tired, frightened, even hopeless. Be with us then and bring us to that place where you can be found. Amen.

Word of Life A society is truly human when without reservations it protects and respects the dignity of every person from conception until the moment of his or her natural death. However, should it decide to get rid of its members in the greatest need of protection...it would be behaving in a profoundly inhuman and also distorted manner with regard to the equalityobvious to every person of good willof the dignity of all people, in all the stages of life. - Pope Benedict XVI, Address to the Hon. Reinhard Schweppe, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Holy See, November 7, 2011.

Treasures from our Tradition Before long, people will be throwing Mardi Gras beads in the streets of New Orleanspurple, gold, and green. A few will be in on the secret: the colors of the beads are derived from the gifts of the Magi. Gold for wealth, purple for power, green for good health. The gifts are also a key to the identity of the Christ Child: the incense for God; the gold for a king; the myrrh, fragrant burial ointment for one who comes to die.

Centuries ago, todays feast bore the heavy burden of celebrating all the manifestations of Christs identity: the birth of Jesus, the coming of the Magi, the baptism of the Lord, the wedding feast at Cana. It was too much for one day. Fortunately, the one day has blossomed into a whole season of grateful celebration, stretching behind us into Advent, and ahead of us into the Baptism of the Lord and to Christs coming again in glory. Tonight, be sure to light the Christmas lights one last time, and gather at the crche for a favorite carol and a prayer.

Blessing of the Home and Household on the Epiphany Some communities have the custom of blessing homes while recalling the visit of the Magi. The household gathers at the manger scene. All make the sign of the cross. Then the leader begins: Peace be with this house and with all who live here. Blessed be the name of the Lord. All reply: Both now and forever. The leader continues: During these days of the Christmas season, we keep this feast of Epiphany, celebrating the manifestation of Christ to the Magi. Today Christ is manifest to us! Today this home is a holy place.

The leader than takes a piece of chalk, and marks the year and the initials of the three kings (as shown in the illustration) over a primary doorway or archway of the home. Everyone then says the Lords Prayer together. The leader then concludes: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. All reply: Amen. Leader: Let us bless the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Transfiguration Academy Middle Schoolers Getting Prepped for Collegeby Nora Flemingexcerpted from: Premium article access courtesy of Edweek.org ...programs targeted at middle school students have been spurred by mounting research that shows middle school is a key time to improve the academics and attitudes needed to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. ...the middle grades are a critical time for students to begin considering their life beyond high school, said Patti Kinney, the associate director of middle-level services for the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Effective middle-grades schools help students understand their potential and give them multiple opportunities to explore the future through a variety of experiences, support, and guidance. ACT researchers found that the academic level which students achieve by 8th grade has a bigger impact on college and career readiness and success than anything that happens academically in high school. Deborah Kasak, the executive director of the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform, said, We need to instill in our students the habits of mind, skills, and work that will prepare them well for the future while remembering they are still young adolescents. Transfiguration Academy continues to lead in developing our students minds, character and spirituality through innovative programs, such as EnTech (Engineering and Technology), DB Adventure Club, the use of SMART technology, Liturgical services, and caring, dedicated teachers. Transfiguration Academy prepares students to face the challenges of a changing society and become the leaders of tomorrow through strengthening faith, enlightening minds and transforming hearts, one student at a time.
