WELCOME TO ST. JOHN’S
We’re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of
your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us
again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Kuske. He would love to meet you and to
serve you in whatever way he can.
OUR FACILITIES
Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother’s Room and
downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John’s believe that families should be
encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be “taught” to young
children.) If your young one needs some “time out,” we have an A/V-equipped Mother’s
Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service,
please feel free to ask an usher.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Final preparation to be the risen Christ’s witnesses begins with sight. The apostles were
blessed with visibly seeing the risen Lord. Overcoming their doubts by the power of the
Spirit, they would boldly proclaim the new life to be found in the Living One. Blessed to
see through eyes of faith, the vision of the First and the Last fills our hearts with this
confidence: “Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again” (CW 406).
PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP
Almighty God, your crucified and risen Son appeared to the disciples to strengthen their
faith and give them the Holy Spirit to forgive and retain sin. Help us, who have celebrated
the mystery of the Lord's resurrection, continually to receive the forgiveness of our sins,
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

SECOND LESSON 2 Peter 1:16-21
16 We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power
and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For
he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the
Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well
pleased.” 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with
him on the sacred mountain. 19 We also have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well
to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the
morning star rises in your hearts.20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy
of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy

After the announcement of the gospel, the congregation sings:

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together,
with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and
said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The
disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending
you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you
forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not
forgiven.” 24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the
disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger
where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them.
Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be
with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out
your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are
those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are
not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

4 The Moabites said to the elders of Midian, “This horde is going to lick up
everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.”
So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, 5 sent messengers to
summon Balaam son of Beor, who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River, in his
native land. Balak said:
“A people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the land and have settled
next to me. 6 Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful
for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the country. For
I know that those you bless are blessed, and those you curse are cursed.”

Announcements
Sunday Morning Bible Class: This week, we will be studying alleged contradictions
in the Bible. We continue our Bible study on the book of Jeremiah on May 12th.
Mid-Week Bible Study: We are now exploring God’s blessing of government.
Military Care Packages: Mary Martha Circle would like to thank everyone who gave
donations of items or money for postage to send gift packages to 39 of our WELS
military men and women. It was greatly appreciated, and we could not have done this
without your help.
Easter Breakfast Thank You: We would like to thank all the volunteers, ladies groups,
council members, and Caryn Korthals for their assistance with the Easter Breakfast this
past Sunday. A special thanks to Tom Pinion, Randy Neuman, and Poncho Showers
and their families for their grills and cooking efforts; Bruce Wilkinson for showing up
at 4:30 a.m.; Caryn for sharing her cooking tools from school; the Sunday School
students and Mary Martha Circle for their fine decorations; and the Council members
other volunteers for helping with serving and clean up.
Infrastructure Needs: You may have noticed this notation in special gifts in the last
few months. We are asking you to be aware of ongoing infrastructure project needs as
you consider special gifts. We realize that infrastructure (“innards” of our school and
church buildings) are not necessarily glamorous, but are extremely necessary to our
aging buildings. This basic and essential need will be present for the next several years
as we move toward our 150th anniversary. Let us take care of church problems (e.g. bell
tower tuck-pointing & roof leaks, skylight tower over altar, inside gutter & window
leaks into church office, worn-out air conditioning system) and school problems (e.g.
outdated and worn-out boilers) before we celebrate God’s blessings.
Adopt-a-Highway Clean Up: St. John’s is holding a Highway Clean Up day for our
section of the highway. This will take place May 11th, weather permitting (backup date
is May 18th). There is a sign up sheet in the narthex if you would like to participate.

Meditations: The church office is taking subscriptions for Meditations. The deadline for
placing your order is May 15th. If you wish to receive this devotional magazine
quarterly, a subscription order must be placed with the church office. It costs $14.49
per year. A few unsubscribed copies are available each quarter, but they go quickly.

SCHOOL MUSICAL: The musical “Aladdin” is Friday and Saturday, May 17th and
18th at 7:00 p.m. Please mark your calendar and come to enjoy all
of the students’ hard work and talent!! There is no charge for
general seating on the main level. $25.00 per box! Please see Tana
in the school office. Thank you!
If you still have not picked up your pots, pans, or other dishes from Lenten suppers
or funerals, please do so. They are located downstairs in the back room/stairwell past
the kitchen in the fellowship hall (behind the Last Supper tapestry - southwest wall).
Children’s Activity Bags: Parents, have your children discovered the children’s
activity bags? They are located near the water cooler in the narthex. These bags have
activity books, illustrated Bible stories, and quiet toys to engage your children. At this
time of year, the bags also contain Easter-themed items.
Senior Living Center Volunteers: If you had anyone you know is interested in
volunteering at Meadow Ridge Senior Living Center and interacting with residents
through activities such as playing games, visiting, doing a bible study group, or
sharing any musical talents and so forth, please contact Keri Luther, the Meadow Ridge
Activity Director at 608-356-8770. Thank you!
Madison Mallards “Faith & Family”: The Madison Mallards are sponsoring a “Faith
and Family” game on July 7th at 1:05 pm. There are sign up sheets on the table in the
narthex. Cost is $12 per person and includes your ticket, a hat, and a cup with one free
refill of pop or beer.

TAC “Month of Compassion” Project
The year 2019 began as a mild, gentle, and snowless winter only to have a sudden
about-face! So quickly everything changed, and the snow kept falling, the sleet kept
visiting, the hail kept taunting our cars, and the frigid temperatures held on. Storm
after storm, week after week, it was challenging, at times, a most cruel winter – only to
be followed by Spring and her flooding.
The Bible reiterates one simple request over and over again, “Love your neighbor as
yourself” (Matt 19:19, Mark 12:31, Romans 13:9, Gal 5:14). Romans 15:2 asks us to
delight in this passage, “Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build
them up.”
The TAC Month of Compassion Project in May will focus on caring for one another
and “building one another up.” Did the winter temperatures cause your utility bills to
increase? Did you need to supplement your childcare costs due to all of the school
closings? Did you hear of a member who fell or took a tumble over the winter who has
some lasting medical bills that need to be cared for? Did a member incur additional
fees to have their sidewalk or driveway shoveled for safely? Did you have a day or
two of unpaid absences as you could not get to work or needed to care for family? Do
you know of a farming or agriculture family that had additional costs to care for their
livestock or animals? Did the spring thaw affect your home? Members of St John’s,
please share if you were affected – and - just as importantly, please share if you know
another member who was affected!
This is such a wonderful opportunity to rise up and lift the burdens of our members
and care with compassion for all of our needs. TAC will provide the seed money and
we will ask members to donate additional funds to care for one another.
Each Sunday in May, the white church box will be in the narthex to receive confidential
requests and welcome donations. You may also take your requests or donations to the
church office. Help our congregation “build one another up”!
