After being named BIG EAST regular season champions, the St. John’s softball team gears up for its sixth-straight appearance in the BIG EAST Softball Championship on Friday at 1 p.m. ET when the squad takes on No. 4 seeded Villanova at the Ballpark at Rosemont. The semifinal round of the 2019 conference championship can be seen on FS2 with Dave Bernhard and Barbara Jordan providing coverage. The winner of the Friday’s contest will head to the league title game to take on either No. 2 seeded DePaul or No. 3 seeded Providence on Saturday. The championship contest is slated for 12:30 p.m. ET on FS1. St. John’s clinched the postseason appearance with a pair of wins over Villanova on April 27-28 before securing the top seed with a 1-0 victory over Butler on Sunday. The Red Storm racked up three major awards and seven all-conference selections in an announcement made by the league on Wednesday. Madison Morris was unanimously crowned the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year after an undefeated season against conference opponents (11-0). Peyton Cody earned the BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year award while the Red Storm’s coaches were named the top staff in the league for 2019. HOW WE GOT HERE• St. John’s opened conference play with two wins over Providence

on March 23-24. In the rubber match, Laura Delgado hit a game-winning single to knock off the No. 3 seeded Friars, 4-3, in 10 in-nings.ThefinalwinoverProvidencestarteda10-gamewinningstreak for the Johnnies in league play.

• The Red Storm picked up a pair of wins against Georgetown on March 30, run-ruling the Hoyas in both matchups, 12-4, and, 10-2, beforetherainwashedoutthefinalcontest.

• The following weekend, St. John’s swept the series from Creigh-ton, the team that defeated the Red Storm in the 2018 BIG EAST semifinalbyaveragingnearly10runspercontest.

• The Johnnies posted their second sweep in as many weekends against Seton Hall on April 13-14, outscoring the Pirates, 11-3, in the series.

• St. John’s welcomed DePaul to Queens for an Easter Weekend showdown with the teams splitting the doubleheader before the weatherforcedthefinalmatchtobecanceled.

• After winning two of three meetings against Villanova, the Red Storm clinched its spot in BIG EAST Softball Tournament for the sixth-straight season.

MORR-IS GREAT• Morris enters the postseason with a career-high 18-5 record

after a single win against Butler on Sunday.• Two days after picking up her third BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

selection, the Hampton, Va., native was unanimously crowned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday afternoon.

• She became just the second Red Storm hurler to be named league’s top pitcher, joining former St. John’s standout and current assistant coach ToriFree.

• The right-hander has fanned a league-high 85 batters in con-ferenceactionwhilefinishingtheregularseasonrankedsec-ond in ERA at 2.23.

• In 13 appearances during BIG EAST play, Morris also held op-ponents to a .226 batting average.

• InthefinaltwoweeksofMarch,theJohnnies’acecompletedfour-straight league contests with 10 or more strikeouts.

• Shortly after that stretch, she tossed 10 innings of shutout ball in her best weekend of the season against Seton Hall. She posted a 2-0 record with a save for the second-straight series, earning herself BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors.

• Morris picked up a league-best six weekly accolades, earn-ing a program-record three conference pitcher of the week awards to go along with a trio of honor roll selections.

• On Senior Day, the Johnnies’ ace picked up her 400th career strikeout.

ALL GROWN PUP• Peyton“Pup”Cody garnered BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year

alongwithanall-conferencefirstteamselectioninthedesig-nated player position.

• It has been 15 years since the Johnnies had a player win fresh-man of the year. The last to do so was Christina Tucker in 2004.

• Cody also landed a spot on Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I Na-tional Freshman of the Year Top 25 List recognition.

• She became just the second Johnnie to be selected to the top 25 list, joining Krystal Puga in 2015.

• She has recorded six hits and 18 RBIs with the bases loaded, including the team’s only grand slam of the regular season.

• Codyhas tallied 45 regular season RBIs in her rookie campaign, only one shy of tying Bowie’s single-season freshman record (46) and four behind the all-time leader Erin Burner (49).

WRAP IT WITH A BOW-IE• With her third-straight First Team All-BIG EAST selection, Gretchen

• In the past 10 games, Bowie is batting .367 with nine runs scored and six stolen bases.

• As the Johnnies’ primary third baseman this season, the junior knocked in 17 runs while scoring 17 of her own in 18 starts during conference play.

• She boasted a .345 average while posting a .709 slugging percent-age and adding eight extra-base hits in BIG EAST action.

• Bowie has also been successful on the base paths this season, con-verting on all 19 of her stolen base opportunities, including seven in league play.

• Bowie shined against Villanova, going 6-for-9 at the plate with a team-highnineRBIsandfiverunsscored.Thejunior’ssixhitswerethe most over any three-game stretch for her this season.

• St. John’s players have been recognized by the BIG EAST 18 times in 2019, picking up six major weekly awards and 12 honor roll accolades to secure the most by any team in the conference.

• Along with Morris’ Pitcher of the Year and Cody’s Co-Freshman of the Year, St. John’s earned its third Coaching Staff of the Yearawardinfiveseasons.

• The Fullerton, Calif., native posted seven multi-RBI games, driving in a combined 18 runs through 15 starts. At the dish, Melendez batted .372 with 16 hits and an .814 slugging percentage.

• DelgadoearnsherfirstAll-BIGEASTFirstTeamrecognitiontowardtheendofabreakoutseasonin 2019. Her overall batting average increased by nearly 100 from a season ago, as she is currently hitting .352 in 35 appearances.

• Mattera, a First Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2018, earned a spot on the all-conference second team.

• She has posted a .286 conference batting average with 14 base knocks and 13 runs scored heading into the league tournament.

• The Coventry, R.I., native was tabbed to the league’s weekly honor roll after a combined 6-for-11 performance against Providence on March 23-24. She compiled four runs and a trio of RBIs in the three-game set. The following weekend, the Johnnies’ catcher worked four walks in a game against Georgetown to set a new program record.
