at their baptism.
this. The conversation moved
toward Henry’s baptism and the
moments in which he con-
fessed a yearning for God.
As I open my well used folder,
there underneath the layers of
scotch tape are the words:
“Receive the sign of the holy
cross both upon your forehead
and upon your heart to mark
you as one redeemed by Christ
the crucified.” Paul explains the
significance of this ancient ritu-
al when he said, “don’t you
know that all of us who were
baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death?
We were therefore bur-
ied with him through
baptism into death in
order that, just as Christ
was raised from the
dead through the glory of
the Father, we too may
live a new life.”
There in the bright sunlight
bouncing off the snow all
around Tom’s grave I read more
words from Paul. “This is the
truth about the resurrection of
the dead: Christ has been
raised from death as the guar-
antee that those who sleep in
Last week I found myself
standing outside in the snow
with a small brown faux leather
folder with metallic gold cor-
ners. It was all that I had to
cope with the moment at hand,
the committal service of Thom-
as Loberg at Lakeview Ceme-
tery. I have been using this fold-
er for a long time. Inside there
are the words spoken at two
events: baptisms and funerals.
It wasn’t until I was walking
away from Tom’s coffin that I
realized I held in my hand a
great theological truth. What
happens at someone’s
funeral service is a con-
tinuation of what oc-
curred at their baptism.
Tom Loberg was just 51.
At his death I was still
thinking about the sud-
den passing of my wife’s
nephew who was just
29. We had just been in Hou-
ston a week before. Henry had
been steadily putting the pieces
of his life together. The picture
was starting to form of who this
young man was going to be. But
then the shock, it was over al-
ready, he was gone. His imme-
diate family was desperately
grasping for ways to cope with

death will also be raised.” Then I
made the sign of the cross over his
casket, the same sign of the cross
that surely was made over him by
Pastor Berwald at Tom’s baptism.
With the sign of the cross I read
the words underneath a page in
my folder that is getting a little
blurry from all the times it has
been hit with snow or rain: “May
God the Holy Spirit, who by bap-
tism and the Saving Word made
this body his temple; keep these
remains till the day of the resurrec-
tion of all flesh in Christ our Lord.”
The grave is just a temporary stop
on the journey.
The last few days have been cold.
Outside the church in the cold air
you can hear a train that has
been sitting on the tracks for a
couple of days, its engine idling
until it is time to start again.
The engine’s rumble signals the
inevitable moment forward. It is
just a matter of time until the
journey starts again, the desti-
nation is reached, the plan ful-
filled that was made at the
start. Maybe the next time you
have to sit and wait for a train
you might consider the power of
our God to finish for you what
was promised at your baptism.
God bless you.

From the desk of Pastor Meyer
February 2013
We have a very rich history
and heritage in Lutheran prac-
tice. I have observed over the
years, however, that many peo-
ple do not know why we do the
things we do in worship. For
example, why do we stand up
and certain times and sit down
at other times? Why does the
pastor face the congregation at
times, and turn to face the altar
at other times? Why do pastors
wear robes? What I would like
to do for a few months in the
pages of this newsletter, is to
give some explanation to these
things. These practices of ours
are not by accident - they are
intentional and have beautiful
reasons behind them.
This Month: “The Crucifix”
The photo directly to the left,
here, is a photo of the cross
that is carried
into worship
at the begin-
ning of the
service
(known as
the proces-
sional), and
then out
again at the
end of the service (the reces-
sional. Known formally as “the
crucifix,” this cross brings spe-
cial meaning to worship as it
focuses our attention on the
absolute meaning for worship
itself: Christ Jesus, and what
He accom-
plished for us
on the Cross
of Calvary.
In Matthew
18:20, Jesus
tells us this:
“For where two or three gather
together as my followers, I am
there among them." Using the
crucifix to enter and exit our
worship service reminds us of
this biblical truth, that Christ
Jesus is with us. It is not some
mystical exercise; that is to say,
we do not teach that walking
with the cross somehow “forces
Jesus’ presence” with us, but
this action does carry with it a
time of reverence and awe in
the fact that God would promise
and does promise to lead and
guide us when we gather
together.
Our Response(s) or Actions
During the Processional and
Recessional also have mean-
ing. As you have observed and
participated in, we stand as the
crucifix enters our worship. As it
happens when a bride enters a
wedding ceremony, we give
honor and tribute by our action.
In our worship, again, this hon-
or is given to Jesus, who lived
and died in our place, so that
the sting of death would be re-
placed for us by the joy of
heaven!
(Continued on page 5)
5
At the close of the service,
then, as the recessional takes
place, and the crucifix is carried
out of the sanctuary, it is cus-
tomary to stand as well, to give
that same honor and tribute. It
is also customary to physically
turn your body as the crucifix
goes by you and then watch as
it goes before you out of the
sanctuary and “into the world.”
I have noticed that at St. John’s,
we do not do this, and I propose
that again, for many of us, the
reason behind the action needs
to be communicated. By turning
and facing the cross, we recog-
nize and realize that it is the
power of Jesus Christ, as we
have been fed by His Word in
worship, that gives us the
strength and courage to live as
His people in a fallen, broken
world.
Hopefully, this is helpful. I
would love your feedback and
questions on this series of arti-
cles that I intend to write! You
can call me at 763-229-7101,
which is my cell phone, or email
me at [email protected].

would like to thank all of the family at St. John's who gifted our fami-
ly during Christmas time. From the gifts of food, goodies, and dol-
lars, your thoughtfulness and welcoming spirit is so much appreciat-
ed. Please accept our heartfelt thanks! We already feel like part of

Women In Mission
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24
When someone makes a plea, or a general re-quest for some help, do you say to yourself, “If she asks me in person, I’ll say ‘yes’?” Or maybe it’s, “I’ve never done anything like that before, I’m not qualified.” Or, “I wonder what all is in-volved?” Or, “I don’t have time.” I’ve thought each of those things at different times when I’ve been asked to serve in various ways. Then I ask myself, “How important is it, in the scheme of life? What does God want me to do?” I often think of the 107 year old mother of a man I know. She has since died, but when she was well over 100, she increased her volunteer work at church because she felt badly she could no longer give as much money as she had previously given. Wow.
One of the faithful members of our church told me she works on a project every day for the annual Country Fair for Missions. Wow again.
An hour of volunteer service a week may not be much of a time sacrifice to you or to me, but to the person or group who is re-ceiving the benefit of your efforts, it can have great impact.
Please prayerfully consider sharing your time and talents with the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, our Women in Mission here at St, John’s. We need board members, a team to head our 45th Country Fair, help to serve at funerals, help to clean the kitchen. Please say yes to one or more of these areas of need. We will help you, walk beside you, each step of the way.
At our January planning meeting, we decided to eliminate some of the monthly meetings this year. We’ll meet in February
17
(because we are the hosts for the Litchfield Zone Spring Rally), April, June, September, October, and November. So there will be no scheduled meetings for March, May, July, August, or December.
There will be a Zone Board meeting at St. John’s on Monday, February 25th at 6:30 for business and to plan the spring rally which we will host in either March or April. Let us know of any ideas you might have for that.
Each Tuesday afternoon you are invited to work on quilts and other projects in the Sewing Room, off the Fellowship Hall. Feel free to come whenever you can.
Let us know of mission needs. Take a mite box and fill it for our mission projects. They are in the Narthex, or in the Fellowship Hall, next to the Kitchen. Check out the Lutheran Women’s Quarterly, also available in the Fellowship Hall or Narthex. Please join us for our business meeting, Bible study or for any of our projects as we Serve the Lord With Gladness!

Dear St. John’s Lutheran Church, I cannot fully express the
amount of gratitude I feel for being awarded scholarship funds from
St. John’s Lutheran Church. Being a college student, money is obvi-
ously tight, and the scholarship helps immensely. This award helps
me continue to attend the Lutheran college I'm currently at and con-
tinue to walk with the Lord. Thank you for this generous award.
~Tucker Vogt
I want to sincerely thank you for your donation of $1,925 from
your Christmas offerings to Missions. Your contribution is very much
appreciated. Gifts such as yours make this ministry possible. May
God continue to bless your ministry as well. ~Jeff Boehlke, Principal,
