Next is a visit to the Fluvarium, a natural exhibit of freshwater wildlife, and where a picnic-style lunch will be provided. After lunch, participants will visit The Rooms and the Provincial Museum to see the giant squid and other wildlife found throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

After an outdoor lunch, participants will return to St John’s and drive along Marine Drive to visit places such as Outer Cove, Middle Cove and Torbay, scouting for icebergs. A pit stop at the Marine Lab Ocean Sciences Centre offers time to learn about some saltwater sea life and seals in the “touch tank”.

Price per person (youth): $140 and includes transportation, guides, entrance fees, lunch, bottled water, and healthy snacks on the coach. Based on a minimum of 30 participants.

Companion ProgramCity of Legends Friday 09:00 – 12:00Start with a stop at the top of National Park Signal Hill, a must-see on every trip to St John’s. It was here that Guglielmo Marconi, the wireless telegraph pioneer, received the first transatlantic wireless message. Next is a visit to Cabot Tower, built to commemorate John Cabot’s 1497 discovery of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is a Canadian landmark that offers spectacular views of the historic town and the rugged coastline of the mighty North Atlantic. Proceed to a visit around the tiny fishing village of Quidi Vidi, likely used by Portuguese fishermen in the early 1500s, and enjoy the well-protected harbour as well as a view of the new and old coastal fishery. A visit to the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company features sampling of some of their fine wares, such as the popular ICEBERG beer, made with real iceberg water. The program finishes with a tour of downtown St John’s, with plenty of time to see Government House, Colonial Building, and the Basilica.

Bird Island Tour Friday 13:30 – 17:00Saturday 13:30 – 17:00A leisurely drive down the Southern Shore to the historic Irish outport, Bay Bulls, followed by a boat ride that ends at the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve Bird Islands, home to thousands of Atlantic puffins, murres and kittiwakes in the spring and summer. Although it is early in the season, keep an eye out for whales that frequent this bay in the summer months!

Cape Spear, The Far East of the Western World Saturday 09:00 – 12:00Now you can say you have been to the other “Far East.” Stand with your back to the Atlantic and face every other being in North America—or turn your back on them—it’s your choice! Start with a visit to the National Park at Cape Spear, the most easterly point of land in North America, which features the famous lighthouse restored to circa 1836. It’s also where you can explore the bunkers built by Canadian soldiers during the Second World War. Next is Petty Harbour, a quaint fishing village offering lovely scenery and the feeling of an outport community.

From Petty Harbour, it’s off to Bidgood’s in the Goulds, a family-run business where a vast array of traditional Newfoundland foods are prepared on site. Bidgood’s Cottage Crafts also hosts a variety of talented artists. Last stop is Newman’s Wine Vault for a sample of the famous Newman’s Port. According to tradition, a Newman’s ship bound for London in 1679 was driven far from its planned course by pirates and foul winter weather. The captain of the ship sought shelter in St John’s and decided to remain in the harbour until spring. The ship’s cargo of wine was stored in caves and when the ship returned to London, the flavour of the port had improved. Try it yourself to see if you agree!
