From Pastor Mark’s desk: When I was growing up, I don’t remember hearing it very often, but I do remember my parents saying to me, “I raised you better than that!” Obviously, this was in relation to me doing something that I knew that I shouldn’t have been doing. Most of the time when my parents used these words, I knew that I deserved the con- sequences that came with my behavior. We all know the expectations of our parents about how we are supposed to behave and act in this world, and I always knew that it was also directly related to our lives as God’s children. The reason I have started this way is that I have been thinking a great deal in recent weeks about how we model what we believe is correct behavior to the world around us. How do we show the world, both outside of our families and within our families, what we believe is important. Let me share with you a devotion I read earli- er this year, because I think it will make clear what I mean. Parents who are not religious in their character. have reason. . . seriously to consider what effect they are producing, and likely to produce, in their children. Probably you do not wish them to be irreli- gious; few parents have the hardihood or indiscretion to desire that the fear of God, the salutary restraints of religion, should be removed from their children. Possibly you exert yourselves, in a degree, to give them religious counsel and instruction. But, alas! how difficult is it for you to convince them, by words, of the value of what you practically reject yourselves. Have I not shown you that they are set in organic connection with you, to draw their spirit, and principles and character from yours? What then are they daily deriving from you, but that which you yourselves reveal, in your prayerless house, and at your thankless table? Is it a spirit of duty and Christian love, a faith that has its home and rest in other worlds, or is it the carnal spirit of gain, indifference to God, deadness to Christ, love of the world, pride, ambi- tion, all that is earthly, nothing that is heavenly? Do not imagine that you have done corrupting them when they are born. Their character is yet to be born, and, in you, is to have its parentage. Your spirit is to pass into them, by a law of transition that is natural, and well nigh irresistible. And then you are to meet them in a future life, and see how much of blessing or of sorrow they will impute to you—to share their unknown future, and look upon yourselves as father and mother to their destiny. Such thoughts, I know, are difficult for you to meet; difficult be- cause they open real scenes, which you are, one day, to look upon. Loving these your children, as most assuredly you do, can you think that you are fulfilling the office that your love requires? Go home to your Christless house, look upon them all as they gather round you, and ask it of your love faithfully to say, whether it is well between you? And if no other argument can draw you to God, let these dear living ar- guments come into your soul, and prevail there. I am sure you see what I mean here, and that this discussion goes much deeper than parenting. The ques- tion challenges us at the very core of our beings and the decisions that we make every day. So, the question for us is – are we living up to who and what we are supposed to be by our actions and the decisions that we make? Do we model how important we believe our relationship with God is by making our church life a priority, or do we discount church in favor of all the other things and events of this world? Do we ever choose church over soccer, or softball, or gymnastics, or. . . ? So I leave you with this question – were you raised better than that? Until next time. From Pastor Mark’s desk:

When I was growing up, I don’t remember hearing it very often, but I do remember my parents saying to me, “I raised you better than that!” Obviously, this was in relation to me doing something that I knew that I shouldn’t have been doing. Most of the time when my parents used these words, I knew that I deserved the con-sequences that came with my behavior.

Let me share with you a devotion I read earli-er this year, because I think it will make clear what I mean.

Parents who are not religious in their character. have reason. . . seriously to consider what effect they are producing, and likely to produce, in their children. Probably you do not wish them to be irreli-gious; few parents have the hardihood or indiscretion to desire that the fear of God, the salutary restraints of religion, should be removed from their children. Is it a spirit of duty and Christian love, a faith that has its home and rest in other worlds, or is it the carnal spirit of gain, indifference to God, deadness to Christ, love of the world, pride, ambi-tion, all that is earthly, nothing that is heavenly?

Do not imagine that you have done corrupting them when they are born. Their character is yet to be born, and, in you, is to have its parentage. Your spirit is to pass into them, by a law of transition that is natural, and well nigh irresistible. And then you are to meet them in a future life, and see how much of blessing or of sorrow they will impute to you—to share their unknown future, and look upon yourselves as father and mother to their destiny. Such thoughts, I know, are difficult for you to meet; difficult be-cause they open real scenes, which you are, one day, to look upon. Loving these your children, as most assuredly you do, can you think that you are fulfilling the office that your love requires? Go home to your Christless house, look upon them all as they gather round you, and ask it of your love faithfully to say, whether it is well between you? And if no other argument can draw you to God, let these dear living ar-guments come into your soul, and prevail there.

I am sure you see what I mean here, and that this discussion goes much deeper than parenting. The ques-tion challenges us at the very core of our beings and the decisions that we make every day.

Bishop’s Youth Ambassador Program

On February 25 I attended the Bishop’s Youth Ambassador Program at All Saints Lutheran

Church in Worthington where I learned more about the Southern Ohio Synod and the

E.L.C.A. At this meeting, we talked about what the Southern Ohio Synod does locally like

their leadership development and educational ministries. We also discussed how the South-

ern Ohio Synod works globally through their work with their companion synods in Brazil,

Tanzania, Germany and Kazakhstan. I learned about the E.L.C.A. and their churchwide

ministries. The Good Gifts ministry is a popular ministry in the E.L.C.A. and provides more

than 50 different gift-giving options like providing mosquito nets or feeding a family of refu-

gees. I will be giving a power point and video presentation during the youth/camp spaghetti

dinner on May 21. I will be talking about what I learned from the Youth Ambassador Pro-

gram and I hope to see you there. Preston Frick

Dear Missionary Sponsoring Congregation: Greetings from Singapore. Currently, I am doing research on church architecture in Asia. In March I

travelled to Japan where I visited approximately 25 churches and took numerous

photographs. My hope is to produce a book several years from now. I have at-

tached a photograph of a Wesleyan Holiness Church in Tokyo designed by the re-

nowned architect Akira Inadomi. As you can see, the basic concept of the space

is the gathering of God’s people around the means of grace (preaching, Holy

Communion). As it happens, Mr Inadomi (who is almost 90) is the son of a Lu-

theran pastor.

Otherwise, I continue to serve as Chaplain at Trinity Theological College,

Singapore, and teach in the area of worship. Our graduation is on 13 May, and

we will have about 50 graduates from this school plus another 30 students from

Vietnam who are graduating from a Master of Ministry course run by us.

I continue to be grateful for your support. Know that I think about you and

pray that God will guide you in your ministry.

Best regards in Christ,

Jeff

Council Minutes

March 14, 2017

Members present: Doug Smith, Pastor Combs, Stephanie Rudloff, Bill Gable, and Gloria Bailey

Absent: Sandy Booth and Greg Zink

At 6:40 p.m. Doug Smith lit the candle and called the meeting to order.

Pastor Combs lead the council members in singing the worship proclaiming God’s word and then in devotions with a reading from Romans and John the fifth chapter.

Gloria Bailey will share the February minutes at the next meeting due to printer difficulties.

Bill Gable presented the Treasurer’s Report for February 2017. The Troutman Fund of $3607.00 will only be used for building maintenance. The General Fund balance was $6,250.00 in the black. National Youth Fund balance is over $3,042.00. The Endowment Unrealized is at a positive $2800.00 balance. The Operating Income is $14,315.77, which was below what was budgeted. The Operating expenses was $17,001.00. The end of the year Financial Audit was pre-pared by Jeff Moore and will be read by the Council members and discuss as needed at the next meeting. Motion to ap-prove with subject to audit was first by Pastor Combs and seconded by Stephanie Rudloff. No abstentions and motion was approved.

Pastor Combs presented the Pastor’s Report. Pastor Ken Witt will cover for Pastor Combs on Sunday, March 19,2017 while preaching/presiding at Roseville Parish. Connor Moore’s Eagle Scout Ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the Social Hall.

Pastor Combs then lead us into our book study using the book, Second Resurrection. We discussed the results from the Litmus Test from the last Council meeting. Will discuss chapter 3 at next meeting.

Pastor Combs lead the members in singing the prayer.

Doug Smith motioned to accept from Community Caring that the Lent offerings be designated to Christ’s Table. The motion was first by Pastor Combs and seconded by Bill Gable. No abstentions and motion approved.

Council members then discussed items related to the needs of this place and community. We discussed having the Christ’s Table Dinner as a part of the 500th Reformation celebration in the first week of May as a potluck. Luther movie will be shown on March 25th plus we need to put this announcement on the new sign. The new sign still needs land wired. Bill Gable will be meeting with that person on Friday, March 17th. We need Easter candy donated for this year’s egg hunt on Easter Sunday. Grace and St. John’s classes will be held regularly. Would like to put this on sign, maybe once a month and free meal. Our website needs reviewed. Rebecca Callahan sent a letter to the Council members refer-ring to using earthy materials when having church meals. Will send this letter on to Barb Stoneburner. The church bus is at Goody’s Garage. The exhaust leaks and timing gizmo leaks.

WOWS:

Mural in nursery completed by Sue Dodd. Evangelism: “Fishing for People”, thanks to Pastor Kerrigan officiating.

Pastor Combs performed Communion and the Lord’s Prayer.

Motion to adjourn the meeting was made at 8:30 p.m. Gloria Bailey first the motion and Bill Gable seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Next council meeting will be on April 11, 2017.

Respectfully,

Secretary Gloria Bailey
