Peace and good! As we gather around the Eucharistic table this weekend to celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, we find ourselves reflecting upon the celebrations of several joyful events of this past month. We celebrated First Holy Communion, Mothers’ Day, the Solemnity of Pentecost, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, and the conclusion of the Marian Month. As we conclude the Marian month, I would invite you to con-tinue to join our parishioners praying the rosary daily here in the parish. The rosary is prayed and led by our parishioners after the 6:30 am Mass (Monday – Friday), before the 8:00 am Mass each day (Monday – Saturday), and before the 8:30 am Mass on Sundays. I also invite you to join our parishioners praying the Novena of the Miraculous Medal after the Saturday 8:00 am Mass. Saint Catherine Labouré offers us a method of prayer as we come before our Lord. She shares:

When I go to the Chapel, I place myself before the good God and I say to Him: ‘Lord, here I am, give me what you will.’ If He gives me something, I am very pleased, and I thank Him. If He gives me nothing, I still thank Him be-cause I do not deserve anything. And then again, I tell Him all that passes through my mind; I recount my pains and my joys and … I listen. If you listen to Him, He will speak to you also, because with the good God it is necessary to speak and to listen. He will always speak to you if you go to Him simply and sincerely.

For further information on Saint Catherine Labouré and the devotion to the Miraculous Medal, please visit the Miraculous Medal web site: http://cammonline.org/. During the month of May, we offer our congratulations and blessings to our First Communicants! On May 12th our stu-dents from our Religious Education program and Saint Joseph School (SJS) celebrated their First Holy Communion. On May 19th our students from our Spanish Religious Education pro-gram celebrated their First Holy Communion. We are blessed to have these children joining with us at the Eucharistic Table. Let us continue to pray for each child as they continue their faith journey. I would like to thank the parents, the Religious Education staff, catechists, SJS staff and faculty, and all those who prepared these children for this Sacrament. Your witness and example inspires these children and enriches their faith journey.

During the Marian month we reflected upon the role which Mary plays in salvation history. Her “yes” to God’s invitation forever changed the course of history. Mary offers us three essential pathways for living our faith:

• Mary shows us how to listen; • Mary shows us how God’s word must be shared with

others; and • Mary shows us how to live in God’s word.

As faithful Catholics we observe Mary’s month through many different devotions and traditions. As we find ourselves in the month of June, we as Catholics reflect upon the devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus!

In the peace of Francis of Assisi, Fr. Tom, TOR

Dear Padre

June 3, 2018

What is the Catholic belief in the Real Presence of the Eucharist? Our belief in the Real Presence goes back to Jesus himself. Saint Paul describes the Last Supper: Jesus took bread and said, “This is my body.” He took wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.” The Catholic Church has al-ways believed that Jesus meant exactly what he said.

When confronted, Jesus did not water down his statements, although they were difficult to accept and beyond human un-derstanding. Even Peter did not claim to understand. He simp-ly accepted them on the authority of Jesus, who had “the words of eternal life.”

Catholics have always believed in the Real Presence of Je-

sus, known traditionally as transubstantiation. This means that the “substance” of the bread and wine becomes the “substance” of Christ’s Body and Blood, while the appearanc-es of bread and wine remain. When we receive Communion, we truly receive the Body and Blood, soul and divinity, of Christ, under the appearance of bread and wine (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1373–1381).

Not all Christians believe in the Eucharist as Catholics do.

Some deny that Christ is present at all, contending that the bread and wine only symbolize the spirit and teachings of Je-sus. There are many variations, and Catholics should carefully distinguish our Church’s teaching from other opinions.

Bread and wine are changed by Christ into himself in a mir-

acle of love we Catholics call, with awe and affection, the Blessed Sacrament.

Pastor Seeks Parish Advisory Council Nominees

Recognizing that sound pastoral decisions are informed by the wisdom of the People of God, Father Tom Bourque estab-lished the Parish Advisory Council (PAC) of St. Joseph Cath-olic Church on March 17, 2016 to offer advice to the Pastor, not govern the parish, which is the Pastor's responsibility. The PAC is the Parish's primary council. The PAC is focused on the future of the parish and how to assist the Pastor in accomplishing the parish's mission state-ment. The PAC helps the Pastor to learn and prioritize the needs of the parish. The PAC helps the Pastor to discern God’s will. The PAC's purpose is to investigate and ponder Pastoral mat-ters, to draw sound conclusions and to propose practical solu-tions to the Pastor. The PAC considers all the practical mat-ters of parish life including ministries of proclaiming God’s Word, celebrating the sacraments, caring for the faithful, pro-moting the mission of the Church to the world, and being a good steward of parish resources. Serving on the PAC is a ministry that requires certain gifts. PAC members are chosen for their ability to accomplish the main task of the Council - the work of investigating, consider-ing, and recommending practical solutions. Members should have the specific gifts of a wise counselor, including the abil-ity to study, investigate, and examine pastoral matters thor-oughly. Members should have the capacity to reflect widely and the patience to ponder deeply. Finally, members should be able to listen to differing opinions, integrate various points of view, and discern with others what is best for the parish. PAC members must be registered parishioners, Catholics in good standing with the Church (Baptized, First Communion, Confirmation, attend Mass weekly, etc.), who reflect the parish’s various neighborhoods, social and professional groups, and ministries. They are parishioners noted for their faith, good morals, and prudence. They must be committed to a life of prayer and to the mission and ministries of the parish. They must be willing to participate in continuing education and the PAC’s group process. PAC members must be willing and able to meet monthly for up to two hours at a time in the evenings and to perform other necessary work in between meetings as is necessary to ac-complish the PAC's purpose. Nominees for the PAC will complete a nomination form, which is available in the Parish Office or at http://www.sjcherndon.org/parish-advisory-council and submit it to the Pastor by June 30. The Pastor will select and announce the new members in July, so that they may be prepared to attend the September PAC meeting. The PAC will normally meet monthly from September to June.

Denise Rutledge Named New Principal of Saint Joseph School

Father Tom Bourque, TOR, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Dr. Jennifer Bigelow, Superintendent of Catho-lic Schools for the Diocese of Arlington, announced today the appointment of Mrs. Denise Rutledge as principal of Saint Joseph School. She will begin her new ministry on July 2, 2018.

“Mrs. Rutledge brings with her school-wide experience, joy, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to Catholic educa-tion,” said Father Tom. “She is well respected in the Dio-cese, active in her parish, and has been a faith-filled Catho-lic educator and leader at St. Timothy Catholic School and in the Diocese for twenty years. I look forward to working with Denise in her new ministry as principal at Saint Joseph School.”

Mrs. Rutledge began her career in Catholic Education as an elementary school teacher at St. Andrew the Apostle Catho-lic School in Clifton, VA. Since 1998 she has ministered as a Catholic educator at St. Timothy Catholic School as a teacher, Dean of Academics, and Assistant Principal. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Villanova University (PA), earned the degree of Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law (FL), and a M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision (Catholic Leadership) from Marymount University (VA).

As the SJS Principal Search Committee shared in their rec-ommendation of Mrs. Rutledge as the new principal, her accomplishments as a Catholic educator and leader include: commitment to the Gospel of Joy; directing strategic plan-ning efforts aimed at developing a mission-driven vision for the school community; collaborating with faculty to enhance teaching and learning by emphasizing the nurtur-ing of the Catholic faith and development of 21st century skills; and enriching the spiritual life of the school commu-nity through an increased emphasis on faith development for all students, teachers, and families.

Father Tom and Dr. Bigelow extend their gratitude to the members of the SJS Principal Search Committee. The faith community of St. Joseph Catholic Church looks forward to welcoming Mrs. Rutledge. Peace and good!
