On October 4th at 2:00 pm you may have heard the bells of St. Joseph ringing—and wondered why. October 4 is the Feast of St. Francis, which is certainly reason enough to celebrate. But this year, there was an extra cause for joy: a special, world-wide project known as the Franciscan Call for Peace. Led by the Franciscan family in Belgium, Franciscan Call for Peace was an effort to ring bells on October 4 at the hour of Friday Prayer for Muslims, in commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the inspiring meeting of St. Francis of Assisi and Sultan Al Kamil of Egypt. During the violence of the Crusades, St. Francis brought a message of peace across the battle lines to the Sultan, who received him with hospitali-ty and respect. Their example of mutual dialogue lives for us today. Franciscan Call for Peace also included gatherings of Muslims and Christians joining in worldwide solidarity. More than 170 actions in 13 different countries were registered. You can learn more at www.franciscancall4peace.org

On the weekend of October 27th, our parish will hold a Virginia Catholic Conference Sign-up Sunday. Our Catho-lic faith compels us to take an active role in the political pro-cess to support human life and dignity. The Virginia Catholic Conference, established by the bishops of Arlington and Rich-mond, provides a quick and easy way to advocate for public policy that promotes our Gospel values as Catholics. Joining the Conference’s Email Advocacy Network is more important than ever because of recent legislative efforts to strip away conscience protections and other rights. These efforts directly threaten the work of our Church in health care, adoption and other areas. Add your voice to those of other Catholics. Take a minute on October 27th to join the VCC email advocacy net-work. You can also sign up online at www.vacatholic.org.

The Knights of Columbus stands as the strong right arm of the Church, and challenges members to grow in their faith through fraternity and programs that support our parish and community. Learn more at www.kofc.org/join us or contact Jerry Frissora at [email protected] or Tom Matula at [email protected]. Upcoming events, Italian Dinner Dance, October 19, Dough-nut Sunday, October 27, Knights of Columbus Council Meet-ing, Nov 7.
