The Gospel today is very clear! Everyone is asking John the Baptist: “What

should we do?” [See Luke 3:10-18.] That is the perfect question as we wait for Jesus Christ to

come the second time. Let us be found doing the Corporal Works of Mercy: feeding the hungry,

giving drink to the thirsty, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick, visiting the

prisoners, burying the dead, and giving alms to the poor.

• Who needs my second coat or blanket or

boots? • Who needs a tithe of my food budget, of

my time, of my conversation? • Who needs to hear good news? How can I

proclaim it by word and by deed?

*Third Sunday of Advent ~It's Gaudete (Rejoice Sunday! Light the third (rose

-colored) candle on your Advent wreath. On Gaudete Sunday, the season of Advent shifts its focus. For the first two weeks of Advent, the focus can be summed up in the phrase, "The Lord is

coming." But beginning with Gaudete Sunday, the summary might be, "The Lord is near." This shift is marked by a lighter mood and a height-ened sense of joyous anticipation. Liturgically, the colors lighten as well. The priest usually wears rose-colored vestments, a hue seen only on Gaudete Sunday and Laetare Sunday. In times when the focus of our anticipation is often on the negative and fearful, this celebration is a reminder that God who loves us is still in charge and that we await his coming not with fear, but with tremendous joy.

~Today's Jesse Tree Symbol & Reading: The proph-et Isaiah is called to holiness, but fears he is not worthy of revealing the living God. Isaiah sees angels around the throne of the Lord and one of them takes a hot ember-like the one on today's ornament-from a fire with tongs and touches it against Isaiah's lips. He is able to go forth, for-given of his sins, to deliver the Word of God. Read about Isaiah and some of his prophesies about the Messiah in Isaiah 1:10‐20; 6:1‐13, 9:1‐7. — Anne-Marie Welsh for Faith magazine, pub-lished by the Diocese of Erie.

Jubilee Year of Mercy December 13, 2015 Third Sunday of Advent Pope Francis chose to inaugurate the Jubilee Year of Mercy last Tuesday because December 8 marks the fiftieth

anniversary of the closing of Vatican II. That council, Pope Francis reminds us, inaugurated a new phase in the Church’s history. The Spirit called the Church to tear down the walls that for far too long had made it a fortress, and to proclaim the gospel in a new, more accessible way. Pope Francis quotes Saint John XXIII in declaring the Church’s preference for “the medicine of mercy,” and Blessed Paul VI in proposing the Good Samaritan as our model for discipleship (Misericordiae Vultus, 4). Pope Francis adds that God’s mercy is “the beating heart of the Gospel,” and that mercy “must penetrate the heart and mind” of every disci-ple (MV, 12). Three times today’s Gospel asks, “What should I do?” Pope Francis would say: Imitate Jesus, who came not wielding the fiery judgment that John the Baptist had threatened, but instead imparting healing, compassion, forgiveness—mercy! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Papal quotes Copyright © 2015, Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
