MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

In Baptism we are reborn as children of God, made members of His Church, and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. With this in mind, we welcome these children of God who were baptized on December 28, 2014: Naomi Elen Basilio daughter of Iniko & Kueyon; Sofia Isabelle Falconi daughter of Heraldo & Sarah; Timothy Philip Morgan son of Adam & Maureen; Lila Jacquelyn Morrison daughter of Joshua & Catherine

The friars would like to once again thank the parishioners for all the cards, goodies, treats, prayers and well wishes during the Christmas season. I’d also like to thank the volunteers and the youth group who cleaned the church throughout this season as well as all those who supported the Scouts for their donations to all the beautiful poinsettias in our church. Of course our Facility Management Team

deserves a big ‘pat on the back’ for working so hard to make the parish and parish hall settings ready to celebrate our crowded Christmas Masses. The crèche scene takes a lot of work to put up (and none of us are getting any younger) but their work and dedication truly allows us to enter into the mystery of the Incarnation. Too often I think adults can lose the wonders of the season because of all the preparations we go through (or think we have to go through). We rush from season to season, and holiday to holiday. I’m sure that stores have already put away their Christmas decorations, and I’m sure I’ll soon see the Christmas trees on the side of the road for recycling. But, the Church is still rejoicing in the manifestation of our Lord to the world. Today we celebrate Epiphany, the revelation of the Messiah to the ENTIRE world, not just to the Jewish people. We recall the story of Magi of distant lands who followed the Star to the place where Jesus was. If your nativity sets are still up, I encourage you to take a look at the figures of the kings. Did you ever study them to see that each one has a different complexion? One is dark skinned, one has seemingly Asian features and one seems to be more European. This wasn’t just an artist trying to be politically correct; it was a deliberate attempt to remind us that the kings represented all of humanity coming to Jesus. This feast day is for us. But if it is for us, what does it mean? Perhaps we may want to contemplate some of the dangers the Magi faced as they went forth from their own lands to follow the Star. They stepped out of their comfort zones to search for the newborn king. They traveled through unexpected places following the light of the Star. They were outsiders in language, culture and cuisine; yet they pursued their goal. Are we willing to do the same? We have been given, not the light of a star, but the light of faith; we know that the newborn king is the Son of God. We need to ask ourselves if we are willing to follow him through the unexpected terrain in which he leads, or are we stubbornly staying in our own comfort zones and missing the opportunities he wants to give us. Continued Peace and Blessings to you and your families.
