PASTOR’S CORNER Happy New Year everyone! I pray that 2015 will bring to you peace, health and much spiritual growth. We continue on our pilgrimage through life with its ups and downs. We don’t journey alone, but with our friends and neighbors and fellow parishioners here at St. Joseph Church. We want to continue to emphasize our programs on evangelization. In the not too distant future we will have two more speakers in our series, “Discover God, Turn on the Light”. Each one of us can witness by lives of holiness, justice and seeking peace. We can invite new people to our liturgies and community here at St. Joe’s. Life passes too quickly. Each day is an opportunity to grow in our faith relationship with God and neighbor. May 2015 find us excited about our faith life and parish. May that joy and hope lift the spirits of the downtrodden and bring them to the peace that only Our Lord Jesus can bring. God bless you!

Fr. Mike Garvey

for 12/21 & 12/28 will be in the 1/11/15 bulletin.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Epiphany celebrates the wake‑up calls of life, the showings of God’s majesty and power in the person of Jesus. The feast alerts us to look for signs of the Lord’s grace and action in our lives today. In this context, the call of the Second Vatican Council to reform the sacramental life of the Church, including our pattern of care for the sick, is indeed a holy awakening. Prior to the 1960s, our care for the sick had collapsed in the popular imagination into something everyone called “last rites.” An immensely complicated ritual, with anointing accompanied by quickly muttered Latin prayers, was enacted for a marginally conscious person at “death’s door.” By the time a priest was called, the sick person might not be able to receive viaticum, or derive much personal benefit from the ritual. The healing effects of the sacrament, investing suffering with the dignity of a link to Christ’s cross, and the immense assurance of forgiveness for a person reviewing the life journey, were hidden. Suddenly, an epiphany swept through the Church, and the way we care for the sick was utterly transformed. It took several centuries, however, for the Church to reach that moment of renewal.

KEEP THE KIDS WARM Catholic Charities has launched its annual Keep the Kids Warm C a m p a i g n . T h i s p rog ra m prov ide s flexible funds for local service agencies to use to help meet the utility assistance requests of low-income, working poor households with children. Last year, Catholic Charities provided utility assistance for 4,883 people!

Some Facts to Consider:

• The unemployment rate for the six counties in the Diocese of Youngstown averages 5.25% (the state of Ohio is 5.1% ).

• Utility assistance continues to be one of the top requested emergency assistance services addressed at Catholic Charities.

• A 2011 report, Health Impacts of Cold Homes and Fuel Poverty, states that "Significant negative effects of cold housing are evident in terms of infants' weight gain, hospital admission rates, developmental states and the severity and frequency of asthmatic symptoms."

• Catholic Charities services all qualifying families regardless of their religious beliefs.

Ready To Help Keep The Kids Warm? St. Joseph’s will have a second collection the weekend of January 10/11 to help local kids stay warm this winter. CONTINUING THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS St. Joseph’s PSR will continue the tradition of collecting warm socks, hats, scarves, mittens, and gloves through January 11. These will be distributed by Catholic Charities to people throughout Portage County. Just hang your donation of new items on the tree in the main hallway by the church doors (please do not wrap your gift). We thank you for your continued care of the poor of our community.

WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP A gathering will be held on Thursday, January 8, in the church at 7:00 p.m. for women interested in discussing the formation of a new women’s group. This meeting is a follow-up to our Speakers’ Series and particularly the women’s evening with Sr. Melannie Svoboda, SND. Please come to participate in our conversation.

Epiphany, like Christmas, is celebrated in various ways by different nationalities and cultures. The customs and traditions surrounding these days give them a distinct feel and meaning.

In many Slavic traditions, Epiphany is observed by marking the year on the mantle of the entrance to a room or house. In the center are the initials of the traditional names of the three wise men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. The purpose is to ask God’s blessing on the home, marking it as though the wise men had come and found therein the Christ Child. It reminds us of the marking of the doorways in Egypt with the blood of the lam so that the angel of death would pass over. God’s blessing comes to each home as a source of protection and grace.

In some places, Epiphany is celebrated much like a mini-Christmas. Gifts are exchanged in memory of the gifts of the wise men and special meals are prepared. In any event, the manifestation of Christ as the light of the world is a time to seek God’s blessing and rejoice in the gift of Jesus to us and to all the world. ©2009 LPI
