The Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament is celebrated on Sundays at 1:30 PM. Parents, please call the parish office to arrange a meeting with one of our priests or deacons to begin to make arrangements.

Prayer and Devotion Opportunities
Our Lady of Fatima Devotion Our Lady came to Fatima with a message from God to every man, woman and child. She promised that the whole world would be at peace, and that many souls would go to heaven if her requests were listened to and obeyed.
In response to her requests, the First Saturday of each month is devoted to Our Lady of Fatima. This devotion includes 8:00 AM mass, a novena to Our Lady of Fatima, the Rosary, and the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
All are welcome at this devotion.
Spend Some Time in Prayer Before the
Blessed Sacrament Our church opens at 6:30 AM and remains open throughout the day for anyone who wants to make a prayerful visit. Please come and have some quiet time with God in the midst of our busy (and sometimes loud) world.
We have times set aside when Our Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament is exposed
on the altar for your prayer.
Monday Exposition and Benediction Every Monday afternoon the Blessed Sacrament is exposed from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM. This opportunity for prayer ends with Benediction beginning at about 6:45 PM and ending at 7:00 PM
You can come at any time for any length of time to join in this quiet, reflective prayer time.
Make an appointment to spend time with Jesus!
First Friday Holy Hour Every First Friday of the month we have a Holy Hour before the exposed Blessed Sacrament. This communal prayer begins at 7:30 PM and run until 8:30 PM, closing with Benediction.
St Joseph Men’s Prayer Group We meet every Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM in the Church where we pray the Rosary.
Afterward we move to the main vestibule for coffee, donuts and fellowship.
This is a great opportunity to be strengthened in your commitment as a Catholic man just by spending time with others like you!

• Do you speak and read clearly – with confidence, strength, passion, and certain knowledge of what you speak or say?
• Do you feel a calling – yes, a vocation – to become God's instrument to proclaim His Word to His people?
• Do you believe you can truly bring Scripture alive to the listener; and are you willing to spend a half-hour or more of practice (before each assignment) to assure a smooth, effective, and vibrant proclamation?

Help Our Faith Formation Grow!
It is time to bring ourselves into the 21st Century in how we pass on our faith. That means we need to upgrade our technology. VHS tapes and to some extent, even DVDs are things of the past.
Ultimately we need to put a smart TV in every classroom because we use them for all of or our faith formation needs. Some quick pricing has us looking at about $4,500 - $5,000 to do this.
We’re looking for help!
If you would like to help with this project, you can make a donation to our Smart TV’s in a couple of ways:
Bring (or send) money directly to our Faith Formation Office (in the rectory)
Put a donation in an envelope clearly marked “Faith Formation TV’s” and put it in the regular Sunday basket.
All money that is collected for this will go directly to our Parish Faith Formation Programs.

PS: You may be asking, “Why do we need smart TV’s to teach religion?” It’s all about New Evangelization. We have the most wonderful message to share - salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus. But in order to get that message across in our world we need to use today’s technology to do it - we are competing with a lot of distractions. We hope to use modern technology to share the ancient truth of God’s covenant love for us! Thanks again for being part of the Good News and for building the City of God here in our parish!
What Are They Looking For? Last Sunday as I was coming out to greet people after mass I saw a small crowd across the street. First I thought it was a car accident and they were exchanging insurance information, but the crowd was too large. Then I thought maybe it was some sort of protest. Then I saw that every person had a smart phone out and I remembered that somehow, our parking lot is a spot on Pokemon Go or some other cell phone game! I don’t know how we got put on the game and I am going to look into having us removed because having a bunch of pedestrians looking at their phones instead of the world around them could be dangerous in our parking lot.
But they are near church and they are looking for something…
Boy this creates a great opportunity to live as members of the Apostolic Church that we are part of. If you see them outside in the future, you may want to ask, “What are you looking for>“ Then, you could take it a step farther and say, “Everyone is looking for love and I think you will find it inside of our church because we are a loving community and we all find love in God’s presence.”
Our mission statement says, “...we invite every person to know Jesus…” What a great opportunity to make an invitation!
Don’t Forget Rosary on the Lawn!
On the Mondays of August we have Rosary on the Lawn - a great family prayer opportunity! Bring your chair or blanket to the front lawn of the rectory. There is music and a reflection is offered. We begin at 7:00 PM and after our prayer there are snacks!!

Even God Rested
“Since on the seventh day God was finished with the work he had been doing, he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation.” (Gen 2: 2-3).
In our busy lives we don’t always take advantage of the sacred rest that is described in the book of Genesis. That rest is important for us physically and spiritually.
Labor Day is coming, an invitation to take another rest from our labors! Take advantage of it!
We will always have opportunities for sales. But our Monday Holidays were given to us as days of rest and “re - creation” with our families and friends. So when it comes, enjoy the long weekend with those you love. Work will wait!
Sharing a Treasure - in El Salvador, and Back Home!
Sometimes there are treasures right in front of us and all we have to do is open the eyes of our hearts to see them. That happened on our trip to El Salvador. Unbound used to be called Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. The name was changed for a variety of reasons for the sake of growth in ministry, but the type of ministry has remained the same - sponsorship for both the young and the elderly. The people at Unbound recognize the wonder and the wisdom of the elderly.
Every Unbound awareness trip includes a visit with the elderly - usually they lead us in morning prayer and offer a reflection about how sponsorship helps them in their lives. This year’s visit was a little longer. We spent the morning with them. We joined them in some calisthenics that were pretty tough for a middle aged guy! Then we got to sit with them in small groups and ask them questions and answer their questions to us.
This time spent with the elderly coincided with our visits with our sponsored friends. My Godson Jonathan is 14 years old. He is entering adolescence which is a challenging time for anyone but possibly more so when you live in a home without a father like he does. I have watched Jonathan grow up for eleven years but seeing the young man that he is becoming I wanted to give him some advice about life as he goes through these exciting but tumultuous years. Language can be a bit of a challenge in this conversation, even though we did talk about it a little.
As we sat on the floor with the elderly, all of them barefoot, I looked at their feet and saw the years of journeys that they have all made. I became deeply aware of the collective wisdom and sanctity that is present in all of them. So I asked them what advice they would give to my 14 year old Godson. It was as if Jonathan was surrounded by 12 grandparents, each of whom loved him and wanted the best for him as they shared advice for him and Hugo (Jason Crean’s sponsored friend who was also with us). In this experience I saw something that I have missed at times - the real treasure that is present in those who have been on this earth for a while. Their journeys and experiences give them a tremendous amount of wisdom. I was thrilled to be able to share this treasure with my Godson. It was a wonderful gift to sit in this sacred space with the elderly.
That same treasure is present here! Maybe we need to share it!
Sometimes we can forget the wonder that is present to us right here in our daily lives. One of those treasures is the wonder, wisdom and sanctity that is present in those who have lived longer than we have. Young people can tend to look for new and exciting things and miss out on this treasure because it is not packaged in the way they want. Adults can get caught up in productivity and see the elderly as no longer productive because they are retired or maybe even a little slower and need help from time to time. Sometimes even the elderly themselves can wonder about their value when they can no longer do many of the things they were capable of in the past. Maybe it is time for all of us to look again! The elderly are the keepers of our story - they have travelled many journeys and have gained tremendous wisdom and sanctity from their experiences. Sure they may repeat stories (I know my father did) but maybe some of those stories need repeating for the joy they bring and the lessons present in them.
September 10 is Grandparents’ Day. Maybe it is time to sit in that sacred space in the presence of our elders. Maybe it is time to look at their feet and see the many journeys they have travelled and the wisdom they have collected over those journeys.
So young people, why not make an appointment with a grandparent or even an elderly neighbor. Adults, sit down with mom or dad and honor them by listening and sharing. Make a point of putting down the smart phone while you are with them so that you won’t miss a moment of the wisdom they have to offer! Ask the about their childhood and about the changes (for better and for worse) that they have seen in our world in their lifetime. Listen to the joy and even the sadness that might be present in their stories and look to see God’s presence in each step of their journey.
Older people, if you don’t get an invitation like this, invite yourself into one of these moments where you can mutually share life’s stories and lessons. You may find that sharing time together like this could be the most valuable gift you can give to one another! Happy Grandparents’ Day!

Is It Time to Start Thinking About Resolutions?
For me, September is a better time for resolutions that January! It is the time when school begins (sorry to remind you kids) and in many ways it is the time when life goes into high gear after some down time in the summer. So it is time to begin again - and beginning again is a time to plan to do a little better.
This year I am going to do my homework in a more timely fashion. This year I am gong to spend more time with my family. This year I will do my best to make sure social media serves my life and doesn’t control every moment of it!
How’s this for a resolution: This year I am going to wake up every day and look for ways to thank God for all his blessings! Wow! Beginning each day with an attitude of gratitude can lead to tremendous growth in our lives!

NORMALIZING ABORTION (Kathleen Gallagher, author, Apr. 2017 LI Catholic)
TEEN VOGUE is a magazine for teen and pre-teen girls focusing on fashion, makeup, shopping and pop culture. However, its online magazine contains a slide show titled “What to Get a Friend Post-Abortion.” What it is, is a top 10 list of best gifts to give a friend who has had an abortion.
It details the best movie to stream to help with the cramps, the newest undergarments to help soak up the blood and an ‘angry uterus’ heating pad to ease the pain. It offers suggestions for hob-bies to keep the friend’s mind occupied; a sign-up sheet to be-come an abortion clinic escort, a ‘we won’t go back’ needlepoint project and a Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg color-ing book. I am not making this up.
This piece is so offensive and insensitive it’s hard to put into words. The slide show is transparent in its attempt to sell abor-tion to young people, to market it as a mainstream ‘good’ and to treat it as casually as a manicure.
Teen Vogue advises girls that if their BFF chooses the abor-tion pill, she may experience cramps that feel “like two throbbing hot balls of lead are trying to escape your body.” No, it’s not lead that leaves your body in an abortion, it’s a baby. A small, de-fenseless, unborn human baby.
Abortion is not tooth extraction. It’s not like getting your nails done. Even the U.S. Supreme Court ,which legalized the right to abortion all those years ago, has admitted that abortion is unlike other medical procedures, “because no other procedure involves the purposeful termination of a potential life.” (Harris vs. McRae, 1980)
Despite the abortion industry and pop culture denials, abortion is a profound, life-altering event. Don’t young women deserve to at least know what abortion is and get all the facts before they make their “choice”? Shouldn’t they be informed at some point post-abortion they may indeed feel sorrow, doubt and shame and that counseling and other aids are available to them? Does mod-ern feminism have so little confidence in women it has to brain-wash teenage girls into believing that abortion is the normal, nat-ural choice, and that the choice doesn’t matter all that much – it’s the post-abortion gifts that really count?
I don’t know about you, but this kind of thing just makes me want to cry. Our teens are being fed fake news, and it breaks my heart, because, at some point in their lives, the reality of their abortions is likely to break theirs.

Venturing Events In Carew Hall after 5:00 PM Mass
Venturing is open to men and women age 14 through 20 who have graduat-
ed from 8th Grade. This year's crew plan is jam packed with interesting and fun activities here at St. Joseph's and "off-campus" as well.

FYI As you know the creche that was on the altar was taken down a few years ago. The plaques that were in the cre-che are in the rectory. If anyone had a plaque placed in the creche at the time when Msgr. Midura was here and you want your plaque, you can pick it up at the rectory. Thank you.
