Third Sunday of Lent +JMJ March 7, 2021

Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners, Today we are celebrating the Third Sunday of Lent. Last year, the Third Sunday of Lent was the last Sunday of public Masses. I remember the starkness of those Masses well. I had added a few extras to allow for social distancing, a term that was so new at the time. What an insane year it has been! Fortunately, I’m seeing folks returning lately and that brings joy to my heart more than you can know! Many of them are coming back because they’ve been vaccinated--precisely the point of the vaccine, to get us back out and about with the things that are so important….especially church and family! A warm welcome to all who have been away. We have missed you. I am glad you’re healthy and that you are back. You have NO IDEA how much I have missed you!!!!! So many graces have befallen us lately. I think most about the Christ Renews His Parish retreat last week-end, our youth activities, our school life, and all the great stuff we have going on for everyone. SVdP is about to reopen! If you have ideas how to make the parish better, please let me know. I’m all ears! Blessings, Fr. Mike

Feast of St. Joe Celebration—March 20

We will celebrate on Saturday, March 20th, the day after his official feast day. We’ll have the Rosary at 4:30pm followed by Mass for St. Joseph at 5:00pm. Then we will have an outdoor procession with the statue of St. Joseph around the premises. Finally, we will have a meal downstairs limited to 100 people due to COVID restrictions. The menu is going to be the traditional plate served on St. Joseph’s Feast Day, which is St. Joseph's Sawdust! It’s a pasta that’s quite delicious! Due to limited space, we can only take the first 100 people who RSVP. Please call the office to add your name to the list! All are welcome at the other parts of the celebration.

St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend’s readings impress upon us that God is the center of our lives. The commandments given through Moses to the Israelites are signposts meant to point the way toward authentic living with God as the center of their lives. Jesus reminds the people to make God the center of their lives when he encoun-ters the sellers in the temple. In Matthew, Mark and Luke’s gospels, Jesus admonished the sellers by tell-ing them that “This is a house of prayer.” John’s gospel is more forceful and goes further, say-ing that Jesus made a whip to drive out the sellers, their goods and the animals and turned over the money changer’s tables. Jesus also said, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The authorities misunderstood, but John hastens to explain that he was speaking of the temple of his body, a meaning that would become evident after Easter. Jesus’ disciples recalled the words of Scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” In John’s gospel these words have double-meaning: Jesus’ own zeal for his Father’s house will consume him and the authorities’ misguided zeal will bring about his death. During this third week of Lent as we take time to pray let us talk to God about our Lenten practices and see if they are bringing us closer to Christ, who is to be the center of our lives.

A Note from Fr. Mike About Online Giving

A year ago this weekend, our collection was less than half of what was needed for the weekend. Thank God and thanks to YOU, folks more than made that up. It happened, of course, because no one expected we’d ever be shut down. The only collection we got that weekend was from online giving. In the last year, we went from about 5% of weekly offerings being made online to 33%. That is pretty great and we look to continue to grow the number of folks contributing online. My goal is 50%! It is a win-win because you have the joy of knowing you have fulfilled your commitment to the parish (a precept of the church) and we are able to receive the monies easily. All this regardless of weather issues, pandemic shut-downs, and so forth. Please consider contributing online. You can do the special collections online too. It’s SUPER EASY to sign up. How do you sign up? 1. Go to www.stjoeshelby.org 2. Click “Online Giving” and then “Donate Now” 3. Fill out the form. It links to credit card or bank

account. Bank account is cheaper for us. 4. You’re done! If it is easier, then just call Rebecca in the office and she can help you get it all set up. Thank you!!! Fr. Mike

Why I Choose St. Joe School

When the oldest of our six children enrolled in kindergarten at St. Joe 15 years ago, it was the only school for us. We wanted our kids to know God and to know their fellow Catholics, we wanted a solid curriculum, and we wanted to be a part of a community where there were opportunities for parental involvement. St. Joe is a living organism. It grows and adapts. We’ve watched the school as-sess itself, pivot and adapt many times in order to meet the needs of its particular students. Over the years, these adjustments have included hiring per-sonnel to meet the needs of ESL students, and stu-dents with special needs. It has involved hiring teachers who take an interest in the unique character of each child. When we were considering the various options for educating my kids, we dabbled in home school and even tried the public elementary option for a couple of years. St. Joe offers so much more than we could provide for our kids alone. It really does take a village—both to run a school and to raise a child (especially six children). No school is perfect, but we’d rather be a part of a school that can be transparent in its weakness as well as its strength so that the whole community can pitch in and make it better. St. Joe is that place. -Joe and Elizabeth Duffy

Instructional Assistant

St. Joseph School is hiring an Instructional Assistant for the remainder of the school year. This individual will assist K-5 students in the classroom by working with individual and small groups of students under the direction of the classroom teacher. Student supervision and teacher support will round out the 28 hours per week. High School Diploma or equiva-lent required. If interested contact Beth Borland at [email protected]

Consoling the Heart of Jesus

Join us in a "do it yourself" Lenten Retreat, authored by Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, that combines the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius with the teachings of Sts. Therese of Lisieux, Faustina Kowalska and Louis de Montfort. The Group will meet weekly in the St. Joe cafeteria on Tuesdays at 7:00pm thru Tues-day, May 4th and will include viewing a DVD, book and workbook. A signup sheet is in the Church Narthex or contact Jim Kozinski at 317-850-5248 for further information.

News for Both Parishes Pope Francis’ Letter On St. Joseph

(continued from last week)

6. A working father

An aspect of Saint Joseph that has been emphasized from the time of the first social Encyclical, Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum, is his relation to work. Saint Joseph was a carpenter who earned an honest living to provide for his family. From him, Jesus learned the value, the dignity and the joy of what it means to eat bread that is the fruit of one’s own labor.

In our own day, when employment has once more become a burning social issue, and unemployment at times reach-es record levels even in nations that for decades have en-joyed a certain degree of prosperity, there is a renewed need to appreciate the importance of dignified work, of which Saint Joseph is an exemplary patron.

Work is a means of participating in the work of salvation, an opportunity to hasten the coming of the Kingdom, to develop our talents and abilities, and to put them at the service of society and fraternal communion. It becomes an opportunity for the fulfilment not only of oneself, but also of that primary cell of society which is the family. A family without work is particularly vulnerable to difficulties, tensions, estrangement and even break-up. How can we speak of human dignity without working to ensure that everyone is able to earn a decent living?

Working persons, whatever their job may be, are cooperat-ing with God himself, and in some way become creators of the world around us. The crisis of our time, which is eco-nomic, social, cultural and spiritual, can serve as a sum-mons for all of us to rediscover the value, the importance and necessity of work for bringing about a new “normal” from which no one is excluded. Saint Joseph’s work re-minds us that God himself, in becoming man, did not dis-dain work. The loss of employment that affects so many of our brothers and sisters, and has increased as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, should serve as a summons to review our priorities. Let us implore Saint Joseph the Worker to help us find ways to express our firm conviction that no young person, no person at all, no family should be without work! (continued next week)

Third Sunday of Lent +JMJ March 7, 2021

News for Both Parishes Fast Or Feast

Lent should be more than a time of fasting. Lent should also be a joy-ous season of feasting. Lent is a time to fast from certain things and to feast on others. It is a season in which we can:

• Fast from judging others; Feast on the Christ dwelling in them. • Fast from emphasis on differences; Feast on the unity of life. • Fast from thoughts of illness; Feast on the healing power of God. • Fast from words that pollute; Feast on phrases that purify. • Fast from discontent; Feast on gratitude. • Fast from anger; Feast on patience. • Fast from pessimism; Feast on optimism. • Fast from worry; Feast on divine order. • Fast from complaining; Feast on appreciation. • Fast from negatives; Feast on affirmatives. • Fast from unrelenting pressures; Feast on unceasing prayer. • Fast from hostility; Feast on non-resistance. • Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness. • Fast from self-concern; Feast on compassion for others. • Fast from personal anxiety; Feast on eternal truth. • Fast from discouragements; Feast on hope. • Fast from shadows of sorrow; Feast on the sunlight of serenity. • Fast from idle gossip; Feast on purposeful silence. • Fast from problems that overwhelm; Feast on prayer that strengthens. May we this Lent learn to not just “fast” but to also “feast” on all that will help us to become better Christians.
