Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners, Last Saturday I was unable to do Mass here since I was quite occupied at the Men’s Conference. This Saturday I am away at a show in Bloomington. Hate to miss two Saturdays in a row, but such is life sometimes. Thanks to Fr. Bill for doing Mass last Saturday and Fr. Paul for doing this Saturday. A wise man once said, “Thank God we live in a world where there are Octobers.” I love October. The cider, the leaves, the crisp air, the pumpkins, the costumes, the childhood memories, Halloween and the excitement it brings our kids, All Saints Day, pumpkin-spiced coffee, pumpkin chunkin, and so on. Most importantly, it is the month of Our Blessed Mother, Our Dear Lady, Mary. This year, we’ve got rosary shirts to provide for the kids in the Rosary Club that Ms. Ceil and I coordinate in the school. But they are so amazing, I thought I might see who all in the parish would like to buy one. Take a look in the narthex to buy one! Wearing a Catholic shirt is a wonderful way to witness to our faith! God bless you always, Fr. Mike

Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners,

Last week we celebrated a lot of martyrs, those who gave their lives for the Lord and His Church.

On Monday, we celebrated St. Pope Callistus I, the 16th pope. (Pope Francis is the 266th pope.) The tradition of Christian cemeteries is thanks to him.

On Thursday, we had the feast day of St. Ignatius of Antioch. He converted to the faith as a young boy, and his pastor was St. John the Apostle. He became a priest and then a bishop. He was killed in the year 106, after having been taken to Rome.

On Friday, we celebrated St. Luke, author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. He was a doctor by trade, and he worked alongside St. Paul for some time. He took the Gospel as far as Egypt and Greece. He was killed on an olive tree.

On Saturday, we remembered Saints Isaac Jogues, Jean de Brébeuf, and Companions. These 8 Jesuits are the first martyrs of the North American continent.

These and countless other martyrs gave their lives for Jesus. What have we done for Him recently? Blessings, Fr. Mike

Bendiciones El p. Miguel

When to Call the Priest

When a loved one is ill, please remember to call Father Mike before it is too late to give last rites. Many times people wait too long, thinking things will get better or waiting until as close to the very end as possible. No need! Call Father as soon as things are going downhill. Remember that a per-son can receive the Sacrament of the Anointing many times in his or her life.

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners, This weekend’s readings are about the necessity of praying and not losing heart. Sometimes this is very hard to do. We know someone who is very sick and/or in great pain. We pray and pray and pray and it seems like they don’t get any better. There is a sad situation in our family, someone is an active alcoholic, or a brother is in jail, or my daughter is making some bad decisions. We pray and pray and pray and it seems like the situation does not change. We ask others to help us pray. This may sound like your story. Jesus tells the story of the widow in the Gospel this week who kept asking the unjust judge for jus-tice to illustrate why we should keep praying and not grow tired. The point is how much more God will make sure we have what we need, even if it is not just what we want. The widow’s persistence is therefore an example for all of us. This week let us be persistent in our prayer for the people and intentions that we pray for, even for the intentions for which we are continually praying. Let us not loose heart!

Sr. Joan

Second Reading — Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed (2 Timothy 3:14 — 4:2). Gospel — Will not God secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? New Adoration Chapel Altar Candle & Flower Policy—Effective Now

Attention all adorers: we have a new chalkboard in the adoration chapel right by the door. Each week, the altar candles will burn in the chapel in honor of a specific person. There will also be new flowers each week in honor of a specific person. The God Squad will take care of changing the candles, placing the flowers, and updating the chalkboard each week. Envelopes will be availa-ble in the chapel and in the church, and on the envelope you can indicate the person for whom you would like to dedicate the flowers or candles. This will help with the new candle expenses. It will also help to have an organized way to refresh the flowers. You see, some folks have terrible aller-gies and suffer a great deal when they are in the chapel after 4 different people have come in and put their flowers in front of the altar. I hope this new system will be good for everyone. I do ask that folks refrain from placing flowers in the chapel on their own and that we work with this new system. Thanks for understanding. It is a laudable thing to place flowers in front of the Lord. This new system will allow us to do it in a way that honors our loved ones and respects those adorers who share the chapel and have terrible allergies. I thank the God Squad for their work on this! Fr. Mike

Rosary Rally

Many thanks to all who joined in the Rosary Rally at St. Joe last Saturday. St. Joe hosted just one of 16,000 rosary rallies, which all took place at noon last Saturday. The power of the rosary is beyond the telling of it. It is the slingshot David used to kill Goliath. It is the weapon St. Dominic used to fight the heresies of his day. It is the artillery the faithful used at Lapanto in 1571. It is Mother Teresa’s sword of love. It is the Bible on a string. Pray the rosary every day!!!

All Saints Mass &Trunk to Treat—Oct. 31

All children are welcome to attend the All Saints Day Vigil Mass at 5:30pm on Thursday, October 31st. All young people are invited to dress up as saints. Mass is bilingual and fulfills the Holy Day of Obligation for All Saints Day. A trunk-or-treat follows in the St. Joe parking lot, plus piñatas in the gym! All St. Joseph’s and St. Vincent’s Parishioners are invited to park in the parking lot, decorate their trunks with Catholic Saint items (statues, pictures, etc.), and provide candy for our kids! Come one, come all! If you can not attend and would like to donate individually wrapped candy or goodies for the treats, please bring them to the Parish Office. Mark your calendar.

Fall Book Study—2019

Dear Friends,

Our faith community has an immense desire to be a community of prayer and to grow spiritually through prayer. Sacred Scripture offers us a masterpiece of prayer, The Book of Psalms. The purpose of the Fall Book Study is to nurture our faith community’s desire for better prayer life by becoming more familiar and gaining greater understanding of the Psalms.

The book for this season is Psalm Basics for Cath-olics; Seeing Salvation History in a New Way; author John Bergsma. Classes will be held each Sunday at 11:00am and Wednesday at 7:00pm for six weeks (ending on November 13th & 17th). You may attend either class or both classes each week. The Wednesday class will meet in the St. Joseph School cafeteria. The Sunday class will meet in the St. Joseph School in Mrs. Vogel’s classroom. It isn’t too late to register.

There are three registration options: 1) The St. Joseph Parish website; 2) E-mail me at [email protected]; 3) Call me at (812) 343-1749 (leave a message). Please, indicate whether you plan to attend the Wednesday or Sunday class. The books will be furnished by St. Joseph Parish. If you wish, you can purchase the book via the typical internet outlets.

Books and study guides are available at the St. Joseph Parish office and are available at the classes. If you cannot commit to attending the study classes, you are welcome and encouraged to study on your own, as a family or as an inde-pendent study group.

Please met me know if you have questions.

Blessings and Peace, Deacon Tom
