One of the most challenging of Latin

sayings is, “Nemo dat quod non habet.” It

means, you cannot give what you do not have.

With regard to religious faith, as an adult one

cannot pass on to children (or other adults)

what one does not have or practice.

The positive view of this saying is that every

Christian adult is called by her or his baptism to grow

in the faith, as the On Mission for the Church Alive

prayer says, “to love Jesus, learn Jesus and live Jesus.”

Another way of looking at this is that throughout the

Gospels Jesus welcomed the children into his presence,

but he taught the adults. Adults would then pass on

their belief and love for Jesus to their children.

On this annual celebration of “Catechetical

Sunday” for the Catholic Church in the U.S., and as a

new school year begins, I ask our adult parishioners—

in particular the parents, grandparents, godparents and

guardians of children: How are you growing in your

Catholic faith? How are you learning about Jesus?

How are you living as he taught through the Beatitudes

and his three great commandments? Because all of us

are in the “school of continuing faith education.” We

may have been confirmed ‘way back in the tenth or

eighth or sixth grade. Our formal religious education

may have ended there. But reflection on what our

Catholic faith means to us is ongoing and necessary

daily.

Take for example, the Holy Eucharist. When

you are a child, and you have received your First Holy

Communion, you barely understand that this Host is the

Real Presence of Jesus Christ our Savior. You know

Jesus loves you, but not much more.

We adults, however, have had the blessings of

many, many meals during our lifetime. Thanksgiving

dinners, wedding banquets, funeral luncheons, grab-a-

snack-with-a-friend get togethers. The variety of meals

tells us how connected we are to our family, our co-

workers, our friends. They tell us that it’s not just what

we eat, but who we eat with, and how the bonds of

those meals nourish our souls.

Now apply those meals to Holy Communion.

When we receive the Eucharist at Mass, because of our

experiences, we know we are connected in some

special way with the people around us in church as

their sisters and brothers in faith. We are connected to

Jesus, who nourishes us, teaches us, challenges us, is

always with us. Our adult experiences can help us

deepen our faith in the Real Presence of Christ, and

make us want to receive Christ in Communion again

and again. It may also help us to adore him in the

Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle, and serve needy

people, as Jesus himself fed the hungry 5,000.

This reflection can help parents to teach their

children about the connections the Mass gives us—to

God, to Christ Jesus, to the Holy Spirit, and to one

another. What we have we can give to our children.

This type of reflection can also be applied to our

knowledge of all the sacraments, the bible, and how we

might serve the poor.

As we begin another school year, I urge all

adults, with or without little children in their homes, to

think about how they may be learners in the faith of

Jesus, in and through the Catholic Church. Pray for all

Catholic school teachers, CCD volunteer catechists and

ministers, RCIA team leaders, instructor couples for

pre-marriage and pre-baptism classes, youth and young

adult ministers, bible study leaders, theologians, and

preachers of every kind (especially the ordained

variety!). May all of us adults be the best of role

models for young people in how we practice our

Catholic faith.

And pray in a special and fervent way for all

educators this year. The coronavirus pandemic has

upended every presumption about education at all

levels. I feel for teachers, especially at the grade

school and high school levels, whether they are in a

classroom or on-line (or both in the same week). There

is no absolutely correct answer how to educate our

children during this ongoing crisis. None of us want

any children, teachers, aides or administrators to get

sick. All of us want the children to learn. Somewhere

between those two statements are the practical answers

for schools everywhere.
