ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
From the Pastor’s Laptop
Father Mark Wagner On this feast of the
Ascension we rejoice because Jesus has dragged our frai l humanity to the heights of heaven! “Man has found an everlasting place in God” (Pope Benedict).
In the Letter to the Hebrews, it says that we can therefore completely trust God: “since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a sincere heart and in absolute trust” (cf. Hebrews 9:24-28; 10:19-23). This beautiful Letter also gives several other reasons for our firm hope. The priesthood is just one of the things in our Catholic Church that gives us hope. There is also baptism: “our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.” We also have our Church doctrines: “Let us hold unwaveringly to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is trustworthy; and the Precious Blood of Jesus: “since through the blood of Jesus we have confidence of entrance…” That is why Catholics love to say “Jesus I trust in you!” We have

nothing to worry about, for we can have “absolute trust” in God.
We are especially grateful to God for the gift of the priesthood. A priest stands in the sanctuary offering the Precious Blood of Jesus on our behalf. He goes among the people bringing comfort , heal ing and forgiveness. This Tuesday, May 10, is the feast of St. Damian of Molokai, the priest who courageously volunteered to spend the rest of his life serving at that famous leper colony in Hawaii. He died there of leprosy in 1889.
We are grateful for the priestly service of Fr. Francis Arakal who came to us TWICE to live among us and to bring comfort, healing and forgiveness to our parishioners. (It’s not as bad as a leper colony and we will not force him to stay until his death!) We rejoiced at the “second coming” of Fr. Francis, and now we are saddened at his “ascension” into Florida. Thank you, Fr. Francis for your priestly service among us! We will pray for you and your Carmelite Brothers in your community in Orlando. We put “absolute trust” in all the truths of our Catholic religion which you have taught us and which give us firm hope of being reunited in heaven!

Every month during the Year of Mercy we are reflecting on Works of Mercy
May: Comfort the Afflicted
Come to daily Mass on Wednesdays, when we pray for the intercession of our Mother of Perpetual Help.
Check the front office or our events calendar for meeting/contact
information about groups meeting at St. Joseph’s, including : AA Al Anon (Spanish and English) Alateen Encourage Courage Call “211”, a free and confidential service that helps people find the
local resources they need. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Sometimes the people who suffer the most are the ones that suffer in silence. Be a friend to someone and show concern for their well- being. Try to always be a comforting Light of Jesus in the world.
Step in when you see someone being degraded or bullied, and put a stop to it. You can change the course of someone’s life with a simple act of Mercy.
Don’t ignore people; try to be that person who listens when someone
is talking to you about their concerns.
Actions for this month:
It’s a simple concept. Baby bottles filled with coins. That’s the Baby Bottle Campaign. But this simple concept yields impressive results. This change adds
up, and truly changes lives. Through hosting a Baby Bottle Campaign and partnering with Modesto Pregnancy Center, you allow us to continue being
dedicated to protecting the unborn, and providing for those facing an unplanned pregnancy, as well as the many other services we offer.
STARTS THE WEEKEND OF MAY 8 to benefit the

Regina Caeli During the Easter season (until Pentecost, May 15), Catholics pray the following prayer instead of the
Angelus (at 6am, Noon and 6pm): V. Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. R. For He whom you did merit to bear, alleluia. V. Has risen, as he said, alleluia. R. Pray for us to God, alleluia. V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. R. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia. Let us pray. O God, who gave joy to the world through the resurrection of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech Thee, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

MODEST DRESS IN CHURCH With the hot weather here, we need to remind everyone of the
importance of dressing appropriately in the house of God. Please avoid short dresses or shorts, spaghetti straps, and any other
immodest attire which does not cover the shoulders, back and cleavage. We ask that men avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts.
Thank you for wearing your Sunday best!

How can we show others the mercy of God? We say that
God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we hold grudges

FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP: Plaza Refreshments are served today by volunteers from our Plaza Hospitality.
Parish Stewardship — a way of life
The Development Committee
is composed of St. Joseph’s Parishioners who have a real interest in the resource development for the future of our parish. Typical backgrounds or interests include: Sales,
Marketing, Digital Design/Social Media, Real Estate, Finance, Education, Management, Public Relations, Law,
Insurance and other related interests. The Committee meets once per month, ten months of the year and terms are
for three years.
The Development Committee is one of the five leadership committees of the parish and its chair (or representative)
also attends the pastoral council meeting.
If you have….. an enthusiasm about the future direction of the parish,
a willingness to listen, to speak honestly and to work toward consensus, the ability to inspire and empower
others to delegate ….
We'd love to hear from you!
What’s the next step if I am interested? Please send a letter of interest to [email protected] or
to the Parish Office.
Deadline is May 13, 2015. Thank you!
Nickie Miranda
Nickie is one of those people who is always serving and giving of themselves. Nickie is married to Mike Miranda and they have two sons. She is part of the leadership of the Militia Immaculata Family Village, has served hospitality countless times, and has been part of the Stewardship Committee.
Nickie has always helped with the decoration in the many events put on by the Knights of Columbus. She has designed, planned and implemented the children’s track for our Annual Silent Marian MI Retreats, besides taking part in many other parish events.
Not only is Nickie a great steward, but she is also very talented; I often tease her saying she should have her own decorating show on TV! Everything that she touches, is embellished and turned into a beautiful work of art. However, one of the most impressive qualities that she has is her patience, love and dedication for children. She is one of the catechists in the CGS program (Catechesis of the Good Shepherd), where one can see her love for God’s children at work.
Nickie is leading the efforts of our Corpus Christi Procession on Sunday, May 29. Join her and hundreds of other parishioners this year.
Thank you, Nickie for putting all your
talents at God’s disposal and being
His faithful steward!
