The JOSEPHITE tradition started in Bangalore with the opening of the

St. Joseph’s European High School by the Paris Foreign Mission Fathers

in 1858. Thereafter, St. Joseph’s College was established in 1884.

St. Joseph’s Institute of Management (SJIM) was established in

year 1968. The institute currently offers a two-year PGDM course

approved by the AICTE. SJIM operates out of a new state-of-the-art

campus in the heart of the city, just off M.G. Road, Bengaluru.

SJIM has fifty years of legacy in management, education and it

is only Jesuit Business School in Bangalore. It is managed by the

International Jesuit Organisation, which also runs XLRI, XIMB and

LIBA.

True education enables a student to achieve his / her life goals at the same time be of value to the society in which they live. SJIM celebrated Golden Jubilee last year. In a way, we are gifted with the responsibility of carrying the legacy of the school to the next generation so that they are also benefitted. First and foremost, in its heart and soul is the concern for the society and environment and sensitizing its students to be of responsible business leaders is what we insist upon throughout their stay here. We are witness to the exemplary contribution of our alumni to the society with impeccable concern and dedication.

At the forefront is ethical conduct amongst eight values that SJIM pursues, to be inculcated amongst its students. Being honest even under extreme testing conditions, being a person of integrity and of being service-minded are the true qualities of a leader and SJIM has set these as the values that guide the school to conduct its activities. They find these values being translated into actions in several ways. At the curriculum and program delivery level, SJIM has set itself five outcomes to achieve in every student. At the end of the course, we want them to be able to look at business as a positive outcome of the duality of problems and solutions. Ability to think of a whole comprising of several parts gives you skills to troubleshoot. Ability to look at parts constituting a whole gives you skills to think in terms of top-line and bottom-line. In technical parlance, the former is Critical Reasoning ability and the latter is Systems Thinking ability. Communicating business artifacts with precision and purpose is yet another program outcome we aspire to achieve. As they do various courses and other activities, every learning goal points to one or more of these program outcomes. From start to finish, their academic life is rigorous and sometimes rancorous too. Achieving high grades in their pursuit of a master’s degree is by no means a lesser purpose. However, securing mere academic grades alone does not take them far enough deep into their future; many high achievers are known for establishing a mark in their chosen field with a very high degree of mastery.

Faculty in SJIM is the hallmark of SJIM student’s academic life. With proven track record and a high degree of knowledge and versatility, students find their stay rewarding in multiple scale. SJIM constantly adds to the strength of faculty and currently SJIM has 17 regular faculty members. In addition, we have a number of visiting and adjunct faculties to provide a rich mix of industry perspectives of business and management.

While academic preparations are important, the corporate world also expects the recruitees to be job-ready – ready to be deployed the moment they join the company. This is a tall order for a typical MBA curriculum to achieve. In order to fill the gap, SJIM has drawn out a 6-month pre-placement training program, called Career Advancement Training (CAT), to be completed in terms 4 and 5. This is a non-credit and compulsory pass module. Successful completion of this module is a necessary and sufficient condition to avail placement services of SJIM.

Diversity of the cohort batch is as essential as all the rest of the requirements. Diversity ensures a student is able to come out of all barriers, regional, linguistic etc., and develop a broader view of humanity which is not only essential but inevitable to be part of globalized businesses. SJIM, this year, has achieved even higher degree of diversity in terms of academic background, gender and demography.

Most noteworthy learning happens when students are in groups and when they are benevolent enough to teach others and share their knowledge without any inhibitions. SJIM liberally encourages its students to complete assignments in groups, prepare and deliver slide presentations in groups. We keep changing the student mix term after term and thus groups also change.

Academic highlights

bMe (business Management environment)

SJIM offers a platform to its students to improve on the group

presentation skills through BME presentations. Articles from

credible sources like Harvard Business Review, CRISIL,

EBSCO are given to each group and they have to present it on

alternate Wednesdays in front of other groups as well as one

faculty member who will be evaluating them on their group

effort.

Apart from this, BME also checks the spontaneous as well as stress tolerant attitude of students

because the faculty tells them on the spot as to which topic they should explain as well as respond

to their questions.

This in turn makes sure that the students know the full article and critically analyses it. This is

certainly an added advantage to the SJIM students as these presentation skills will help in their

careers as well.

Toastmasters Clubs

St Joseph’s Institute of Management, India, recognized the

need for Toastmasters and how it will help its students be

the Global leaders of tomorrow. First introduced in 2017,

students of SJIM were allotted into 4 groups, namely, St

Joseph’s Toastmasters club, SJIM Toastmasters Club, SJIM

Orators forum, and Josephites Toastmasters club. Every

participating member gets a chance to hone their leadership,

communication, management skills as every meeting has a

theme and the members take up various roles. This helps them to be the leaders and Game

Changers of tomorrow.

The club mission of toastmasters aims to empower people to gain self-confidence and achieve

personal growth as a result of the positive learning and support.

Industry Internship Program

Internship is a mandatory affair and the placement cell is actively involved in helping the students

to work as interns in companies and start-ups. At the end of the first year, students are required

to undertake an Industry Internship project in order to correlate the theory that they have learnt to

what is being followed in the real life corporate world.

The summer internship programme encourages students to undertake research- based / On the

job projects for a period of 8 weeks, full time, in order to gain practical experience.
