1 STRATEGIC PLAN 2021 - 2025

St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace acknowledges the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this nation. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which our campuses are located. We pay our respects to their ancestors and descendants. St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace is committed to honouring Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ unique cultural and spiritual connections to the land, waters and seas and their rich contribution to Australian and global society.

About Us Our foundation story is inspired by Blessed Edmund Rice, who founded the Christian Brothers in Waterford, Ireland in 1802 to provide education, opportunity and hope to young men. On 5 July 1875, three Christian Brothers opened their first school in Queensland, in the Pugin Chapel, the old St Stephens’ Cathedral, with 26 boys enrolled. From these humble beginnings, the Terrace story has progressed.

St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace has been nurtured by the Christian Brothers and their partnerships with lay staff and the wider Terrace Family - current and past families, Old Boys and the broader community. Our College is grateful for the vision, service and commitment of the Christian Brothers and we are proud of the thousands of Terracians who have gone before us.

Since 2007, Terrace has been governed by Edmund Rice Education Australia. As a member school of Edmund Rice Education Australia, our College is guided by The Charter for Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice tradition, which is authenticated by the touchstones of Liberating Education, Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community and Justice and Solidarity.

Having celebrated its 145th anniversary in 2020, St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace today educates 1700 students and has 220 teaching and non-teaching staff. Our College operates across four campuses, including the main College site in Spring Hill, Waterford Place which is a purpose-built initiative on Water Street in Spring Hill for students prior to entering Senior schooling, the Tennyson Playing Fields and the Brother Buckley Outdoor Education Centre at Maroon Dam. A newly acquired property on St Paul’s Terrace will provide future development opportunities for our College. St Joseph’s College also enjoys a long-standing partnership with the Brisbane City Council in the use of designated space for sport and community facilities in Victoria Park.

As we move Towards 150, the 2021 - 2025 Strategic Plan, in concert with the College Master Plan, seeks to set forth a vision for our College that honours the past, meets the needs of educating young men today and continues the traditions of good stewardship and legacy that have characterised the Terrace Family for generations.

Our ValuesAS A CONTEMPORARY CATHOLIC FAITH COMMUNITY

KNOWLEDGE

The Celtic Cross represents our Irish Catholic heritage and our knowledge that God is a loving presence in our lives and in the lives of those we serve.

Like Blessed Edmund Rice, we challenge ourselves and others to strive for personal excellence, using our knowledge and gifts in the service of others.

WISDOM

The Book of Learning symbolises wisdom and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who is the beginning and end of all things. Wisdom may be drawn from Sacred Scripture and the Catholic tradition, from our knowledge and from the practice of humility, inspiring us to truly discern the best outcomes for ourselves, others and our communities.

Like Blessed Edmund Rice, we pursue wisdom so we can advocate for the common good, liberating ourselves and others to be the best that we can be.

HUMILITY

The Star symbolises the light of faith created by the knowledge of the Gospels, inspiring us to become people of humility. Embracing humility means we develop true self-awareness of our strengths, areas for growth and where we need the courage to change.

Like Blessed Edmund Rice, we learn to respect ourselves and others, celebrate inclusion and diversity and become more compassionate as we live a life of integrity and purpose.
