COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

CELEBRATING AND KEEPING SAFE The first of our Year 12 Graduations was held at Panthers’ Auditorium last Saturday evening. Around 150 students graduated from Newman Senior Technical College. It was a fantastic evening enjoyed by the graduates, families and staff. This Friday MacKillop Senior College will host their Year 12 Graduation, followed by St Joseph’s Regional on Saturday evening. As Christmas draws closer and the school year comes to a close, there will be more celebrations. We want these to be fun occasions but we also want everyone to keep safe. There are a few key things which are worth remembering before hosting or attending a party:

it is an offence to provide alcohol to a person under 18 and hefty fines apply, up to $5,500.00;

if parents have concerns about their son or daughter attending a party, take the trouble to check it out and be prepared to say ‘NO’;

talk to teenagers about peer pressure, the dangers of drugs and the potentially harmful effects of alcohol and mixing the two;

ensure that teenagers are transported safely and avoid any opportunity for them to get into a car with a driver who has been drinking;

be especially careful around water. There are avoidable tragedies every year because young people engage in risky behaviour;

recent tragedies involving the deaths of young people who have experimented with illegal substances should be a wake-up call for anyone considering experimenting with substances;

plan your celebration and avoid having to walk home late at night. It is important to look after each other and avoid situations where you could be assaulted; and

never advertise a party on social media. These are just a couple of common sense precautions. Taking the effort to follow these can ensure that a fun time is had by all and tragedies are avoided. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

Canteen Helpers Dinner Last week, our Canteen volunteers attended our annual thank you dinner at The Point restaurant. Everyone had a wonderful evening with much conversation and good cheer. I would like to especially acknowledge our Canteen Manager, Mrs Joanne Farthing, her assistant Mrs Deanne Fyffe and our great Gap Year Trainees Aidan Faye and Jessica Myers. We also welcomed Teacher's Assistant Ms Donna Hamlin to the evening. Donna also celebrated her 40th birthday on the evening. Aside from her wonderful work assisting in the Senior Cafe, Donna does a wonderful job mentoring our trainees.

The Canteen volunteers are a great little community within St Joseph's Regional College. They make a significant difference to our bottom line and are appreciated as key part of our whole College community. If you are a supporter to the College and feel you could make a contribution in this area, please feel welcome to contact the College to speak to Joanne. Remembrance Day 2014

I commend to you Mr Sean Jennings report on the Remembrance Day ceremony

College Captain, Olivia Bentley, Vice Captains Eleanor Wright & Jayden Hunter and Flinders House Prefect Corben Rees gathered with fellow SAPSS representatives at the cenotaph on the Town Green to pause and reflect on the 96th anniversary of the day and time the guns fell silent on the western front.

The service, while honouring and remembering the many thousands who have lost lives and loved ones, was equally honouring the future as depicted in the wonderful address given by Erin Moss from Port Macquarie High School. This was visiblely represented by the many wreaths laid by school captains and representatives from the Hastings area.

It was a privilege to witness our College Leaders as true ambassadors of our College during the service

Subject and Excursion Fees

I would like to thank the many families who make significant sacrifices in prioritising the payment of College Service fees and Parish Tuition fees. This is, without doubt, a strong endorsement of the work we do here at St Joseph’s Regional College in the formation of our students ‘to become the best possible people they can be’.

As we approach the conclusion of Semester 2 at the College, I would request continued attentiveness to keeping accounts up-to-date. In this respect, I would remind families (as per my letter at the beginning of the year) that the College is not able to distribute reports if accounts are not paid and outstanding library books have not been returned. In this respect, I am very conscious of avoiding any embarrassing moments for families, and would ask if you are in a situation where you cannot pay an account, then it is imperative that you contact me to make an alternative arrangement.

With regard to major projects in Timber Technologies & Metal Technologies, these fees must be paid prior to major works being released.

Families have now received their College accounts either via email or post. It would be very much appreciated if outstanding Library books are returned and accounts finalised by 14th November.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey College Principal

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION Year 8 Reconciliation Fr James our College Chaplain is facilitating a reconciliation program over the next few weeks in our new College Chapel with the assistance of Stephanie Figgins our Youth Ministry Officer. There are two parts to the program. The first class is the preparation phase which explains to the students the concept of reconciliation, how it relates to the other sacraments within the Catholic tradition, what reconciliation means, and how Catholic and non-Catholic students can enter into a period of reflection. In the second phase students can participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation or ask for a blessing or offer a prayer. We are so pleased to have this sacred space so students can have a space to reflect, pray and contemplate their relationship with Jesus Christ. Festa Christi This week, the following students represented our College community at Festa Christi, a Diocesan gathering to explore and celebrate their faith: Bella Clark, Levi Brett, Jye Davidson, Taine Hunt, Daniel Slater, Harrison Grove, Kera Coyne, Romeka Barkley, Julia Cutajar, Maddison Watton, Isaac Sanderson, Teegan Keesing, Emily Shelley, Hannah King. Mrs Helen Gilbert, Zac Parnell and Christa Morrow as group leaders accompanied the students to Coffs Harbour.

The students were involved in a variety of activities and had the opportunity to meet students from the other secondary schools in our diocese. Students were involved in planning and preparing a closing liturgy. The theme of the gathering was, “Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” The students were challenged to find ways they can be disciples in the community and to remain courageous. The students were wonderful ambassadors for our school community.

Nora Swain Leader of Catechesis and Evangelisation

Apex Public Speaking Combined High Schools

Congratulations to Katelin Nickle who came away with 1st place while competing in the Apex Public Speaking Combined High Schools competition on Wednesday night held at Wauchope RSL. Each student had to give a five minute speech on any topic of their choice. Katelin choose ancient Egypt and projects of the Pharaoh’s.

The apex shield will now be on display in the College office foyer for the next 12 months. Well done, Katelin.

Attention Year 10 students and parents

THE FACTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ‘WRITING RIGHT’

Students will do 12-14 units in the Preliminary Course and 10-12 in the HSC. The only subject that does not require writing tasks is Maths.

English is not the only subject that requires essays.

Practical subjects and science based courses still require written responses. They may not be essays, but they will require STRUCTURED written responses, often extended.

Example - PDHPE has a minimum 12 essays. These are assessment tasks only and this DOES NOT include class tasks, drafts, sample answers. To do well in the HSC, a realistic figure of written responses to be completed would be approximately 80-100. This is for one subject only

75% of HSC exams will be writing 3-4 essays, which include 3-4 pages each.

95% of your tasks will require structured written responses.

Whilst most students choose to drop a course in Year 12, this does not mean written responses/tasks will ‘drop’. On the contrary, they will increase as you prepare responses for your teacher to mark and check.

THE BOTTOM LINE: LEARNING HOW TO PREPARE AND WRITE ‘RIGHT’ IS THE KEY TO ACHIEVING YOUR BEST IN THE HSC.

When: Every MONDAY, Where: GL8

When: Lunch time

What: Learn how to prepare written responses for ALL subjects.

Brigitte Reiger Leader of English

TECHNOLOGY NEWS

ATTENTION CURRENT YEAR 9 - YEAR 10 TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS FOR 2015

All Year 10 students in 2015 will be required to bring their own device (iPad or laptop) next year. The device you choose to bring may depend on your future path of study in Years 11/12 as well as your own preference. To assist students and parents to consider the options, a website has been setup specifically to deal with this. The link is http://go2school.wix.com/year102015 This can also be accessed via the Quicklinks section of the College website

Options, policies, tips for home, how to order a school laptop and more can all be accessed from this site. There is also a contact form if you have any further queries.

This week's tip

Engage your children in conversation about what they do on their iPad or laptop and in their digital world. Become informed. The best way to make technology a healthy and positive part of family life is actually to embrace it, educate yourself about it and go hands-on with new devices, apps, social networks and services wherever possible. Not only does the practice allow you to make better, more informed decisions –- it also provides shared activities and interests for adults and kids to bond over, and equips you to have the healthy, open and honest dialogue that’s vital to restoring peace to the household and helping kids stay safe and behave appropriately online.

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS MUSIC NOTES

There will be a concert on Friday, 28th November at 7.00pm for all parents, families and friends of all the music students. This is to showcase the Instrumental and Vocal Music Program. All the school bands will be playing as well as some individual students.

Sharon Green - Instrumental Music Coordinator

LIBRARY Term 4 Competition: This will be something completely different! Go to this website to explore…. https://www.smore.com/fgegx-green-sock. Looking forward to some amazing entries this term. November is Picture Book Month November is celebrated annually in Library land as being “Picture Book Month”. Some may question why a secondary school library has Picture Books amongst its collection. I love this quote from the official Picture Book Month website (www.picturebookmonth.com) because I think it encapsulates so much about the never-ending debate about print vs non-print.

In this digital age where people are predicting the coming death of print books, picture books (the print kind) need love. And the world needs picture books. There’s nothing like the physical page turn of a beautifully crafted picture book.

So please consider a Picture Book amongst your November reads, and savour the ‘beautiful craft’ that has produced it. Years 7-10 Students in Years 7-10 are encouraged to start collecting their text and Library books together in readiness for a quick return after the exams in Weeks 9 and 10. There will be several opportunities for students to return books, such as Library staff visiting PC rooms with a trolley, and Library staff with a trolley being available in the Lockers area at certain times. However, ultimately it is the responsibility of every student to return their books in good condition. We are looking forward to a seamless end-of-year textbook return period. Please note the following key dates; 5th December – Year 10 books due back by 3.15pm. 9th December – Years 7-9 books due back by 3.15pm. Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student’s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. Many thanks to all those who complete this requirement promptly. Like us on FaceBook – St Joseph’s Regional College Library. Follow us on Twitter – @sjrcexchange Karen Bale Teacher Librarian

BACK TO BEL CANTO WHEN: Thursday 4th December at 6:30 pm

WHERE: In the Tacking Point PS hall

WHY: Because it’s time! And, because we know choirs are fabulous and choir members are very special human beings.

TPPS’s elite children’s choir, Bel Canto, has now been in existence for 12 years and we think that’s absolutely fantastic! So, we want all past members to come along to help us celebrate. If you have ever been a member of this terrific choir please come along and join in the fun. We would love items and/or verbal tributes from past members - and we might even get you to help us with some presentations for the existing members.

As this is a busy time of year it won’t be a late night. Kindly RSVP so we can have enough chairs out

and perhaps even give you a job to do.

RSVP with “YES I’M COMING” to Robyn Ryan 0407 007 993 or [email protected]

ITEMS / TRIBUTES If you would like to speak or perform a solo item or a group item kindly RSVP to Kath Peck - [email protected]

Joey’s Primary Bago Family Fun Day

– Helpers Needed

The support of St Joseph’s Regional School students would be most appreciated at the St Joseph’s Primary annual Bago Family Fun Day. This year’s family fun day will again be held at the Bago Vineyards on Sunday the 23rd November. We are in need of high school students to volunteer on the Kids Corner stalls, which include cake decorating, slushies, lucky dips, hair spraying and temporary tattoos. Any student available to assist between 11:00am and 3:00pm on Sunday the 23rd November, please email Julie Preston [email protected]. All student volunteers will receive a certificate of community service recognition for their contributions in making the day most enjoyable for our Joey’s kids.
