COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY Sunday, 11th May is Mother’s Day. It is a day set aside to celebrate motherhood and for us to remember and show our appreciation to mothers. Some within our community see the day as just another commercial opportunity for businesses to increase sales and profits. It is certainly a busy time for florists and some retailers. Be that as it may, we can show our appreciation to mothers and mother figures without spending a lot of money. Some simple suggestions include making your own card, baking a cake for your mother, planning an outing you know she will enjoy or cooking breakfast or another meal for her. The following is a prayer for mothers written by Bishop Kevin Manning from Parramatta Diocese. “We thank you, O Lord, for the gift of Motherhood. May those blessed with children be granted the gift of courage, perseverance and good health. May they face each new day with faith and hope in your abiding love. May all families enjoy the strength of your love and the priceless gift of peace. Amen.” My very best wishes to all mothers on their special day. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

Year 7 Information Evening On Monday evening, St Joseph’s Regional College welcomed families to our Year 7 (2015) Information Evening. I would like to thank all staff who attended on the evening for their tremendous efforts in promoting the College. Also a special thank you to students who volunteered their time to play music, prepare and serve hors d’oeuvres, deliver speeches and conduct tours of the College. Many parents of prospective students commented on the well-mannered and highly engaged students here at the College. They were great ambassadors for the College. Fee Reminder Finally, thank you for the prompt way the good majority of families have responded to paying the College Statement of fees. These funds assist the College considerably in delivering a first class education to your sons and daughters. As you are aware, Term 2 marks the examination and reporting cycle at St Joseph’s Regional College. In this context I am aware that it is College policy not to distribute reports to families with outstanding accounts. As it is early in the term, I would ask that all accounts are paid on time so as to avoid any embarrassing moments. In addition, I would also encourage families who may have difficulties in meeting accounts to contact me to discuss alternative arrangements. Hopefully, following this process will ensure that all students receive their school reports on the designated distribution date. Reports will be distributed in Week 1 of Term 3 on the 18th July. The procedure for issuing reports requests that students share their results with their parents. Hence, report envelopes will be issued to all students with the following message on the front and on the seal: This report envelope is sealed and to be opened only by a Parent or Guardian. I would also like to inform families who pay their account by BPay, that the College is unable to allocate your payment to a particular item. Our data system will only tag the oldest outstanding amount. If you would like a particular item paid, cheque or cash paid via the College front office is the best option in this case. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the genuine sacrifices that all families make to send your sons and daughters to St Joseph’s Regional College. It is, indeed, a tremendous College and your financial contributions ultimately ensure that we can offer the best education outcomes for them. God Bless

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS MESSAGE Cyber Safety On Wednesday, Senior Constable Steven Jeffery visited the College to speak to our students about the importance of Cyber Safety. Each Year Group had age appropriate discussions around educating young people on the legal and social ramifications of social media. Senior Constable Jeffery message relayed how important it is for young people to be aware of their actions and how social media certainly does have an effect on future careers. He also spoke about how these incidences can affect the mental health of young people and the effects to their families. Further visits will be arranged for later in the year to continue building on this day. For more information on cyber safety go to http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/ Cath Eichmann Assistant Principal

FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION

Caritas- Project Compassion Project Compassion is how Caritas is able to raise funds for the wide range of development projects in Australia and around the world. These projects empower individuals and communities. It is an opportunity to bringing thousands of Australians in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. Project Compassion 2014 carries Jesus’ commitment for all for a life of abundance: “I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.” When reflecting on this verse, Pope Francis said: “Men and women of all times and all places desire a full and beautiful life... a life that is not threatened by death but that can mature and grow to its fullness.”

St Joseph’s Regional College Community should be very proud in the variety of activities they plan, organised and participated in to raise close to $6000. This is a true reflection of our College theme ‘Witness’. It is through our actions we live out the gospel message.

NAPLAN is an annual assessment of literacy and numeracy for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been part of the school calendar since 2008 and is used by governments, education authorities and schools to determine whether young Australians are meeting important educational goals in literacy and numeracy. Do I Need to Prepare for NAPLAN: Parents and grandparents discuss their perspectives on what to do, and what not to do, to help children prepare for NAPLAN. Why is NAPLAN Valuable? NAPLAN data is a conversation starter. It is an important tool to encourage discussion about student progress in the fundamentally important areas of literacy and numeracy. Let's Talk About Criticisms of NAPLAN: Parent group representatives tackle some of the criticisms of NAPLAN. CREATIVE ARTS NEWS Our senior drama students travelled to Parramatta to see a HSC text performance 'Parramatta Girls' by Alana Valentine. Eight former inmates return to the notorious Parramatta Girls Detention Centre for a reunion forty years later. For some it’s a way to find healing, for others it’s a way to dispel the ghosts, for all of them it is a way to share the pain. This vibrant, confronting and often very funny play explores the defiance, endurance and psychological legacy of being branded a home girl. Interspersed with songs, and storytelling this is a tribute to the mischief and humour in the face of hardship suffered by countless girls, forgotten Australians who were victims of this harsh juvenile detention centre. Award-winning playwright Alana Valentine has woven together the true stories of women who were once Parramatta Girls into a masterful tribute to their courage, humour, strength and optimism. Under the direction of Tanya Goldberg, eight extraordinary actresses bring this powerful work to audiences in Parramatta as part of the anniversary that marks 40 years since the closure of the institution.
