GOSPEL MEDITATION
The cake is frosted, the guests have arrived, and
the gifts are piled high. One by one, the packages
are opened, and one by one, the child reaches for
another. Who among us hasn't seen a child who
appears crestfallen when the gifts run out? Even
the abundance isn't quite enough. Today's Gospel
tackles a key question in the spiritual life -
grateful or greedy?
"There was a rich man whose land produced a
bountiful harvest." We all recognize the need to
be practical. Raising a family, there's need to save
for all sorts of things beyond normal day-to-day
costs - medical bills, family vacations, private
school, rainy day funds, retirement. Jesus doesn't
critique the rich man for simply having an
abundant harvest. It's his mentality. Does the rich
man sell off the extra to make the needed repairs
to the back fence or to invest in some additional
livestock to grow the business? Perhaps donate
some of the excess to the poor? No. "You have so
many good things stored up for many years, rest,
eat, drink, be merry!" The man wants to hoard
and indulge with no concern for others.
Jesus doesn't condemn prudent saving or owning
necessary items. He calls us to purify our
attitudes. "Guard against all greed... one's life
does not consist of possessions." We are called to
be good stewards. This means being practical. It
also means remaining open to God's invitation

How are we to understand the Transfiguration? The
story of the Transfiguration is also proclaimed on
the second Sunday of Lent—a key part of Jesus’
journey towards the Cross. The Catechism of the
Catholic Church draws parallels between Jesus’
Baptism and the Transfiguration. Jesus is baptized at
the start of his public ministry. His baptism
proclaims the mystery of our first regeneration—we
die and rise again with Christ. The “Transfiguration
‘is the sacrament of the second regeneration’: our
own Resurrection (St. Thomas Aquinas, STh III, 45, 4,
ad 2). From now on we share in the Lord’s
Resurrection through the Spirit who acts in the
sacraments of the Body of Christ. The Transfiguration
gives us a foretaste of Christ’s glorious coming,
when he ‘will change our lowly body to be like his
glorious body (Phil 3:21)’” (Catechism of the Catholic
Church, no. 556). During the Prayer after
Communion, we pray that God might “transform us
into the likeness of your [his] Son, / whose radiant
splendor you willed to make manifest / in his
glorious Transfiguration.” The Collect, or opening
prayer, tells us that the mystery of the
Transfiguration “prefigures our full adoption to
sonship.” The Transfiguration, initially revealed to

Volunteers Needed for the Collin County Juvenile Detention Center (CCJDC) Ministry
The CCJDC Ministry is requesting the women of St. Jude to hear the call to mission to join your sisters in bringing Christ and His message of love, forgiveness, and mercy to incarcerated young women, ages 13-19. The team currently meets these young women every 1st Tuesday of the month at the JDC in McKinney, TX for 1 hour from 7:30 - 8:30 pm. Please prayerfully consider joining this ministry to allow a second day to visit each month. This ministry team offers faith enrichment, career preparation and financial planning skills to juveniles incarcerated in the CCJDC multiple times a month. Volunteers will be required to be Safe Environment cleared at St. Jude, pass fingerprinting and a criminal background check, and attend PREA training by the COLLIN COUNTY JDC.
Please come and meet the CCJDC team on Monday, August 5 at 7 pm at Black Walnut Cafe in Allen. For any questions, please contact Patricia Connolly Stephan at (952) 428-8068 or [email protected].
“I thought, who will serve and provide a bit of hope to these girls? Could we make a difference? Then on one night, as we were about to leave the JDC, the girls asked if they could give our small ministry team a hug. How these girls longed for simple kindness, an act of mercy, caring without judgement. We saw the immense love of Christ in action that night.” - a CCJDC Ministry volunteer
Mission Statement The nursery program at St. Jude Catholic Church was established as a ministry for the parents and children of the parish. This ministry has a two-fold mission, one for parents and one for children. The mission for the parents is to allow parents with young children to participate more fully in worship, faith formation, service to the parish and fellowship. The mission for the children is to provide a safe, enjoyable, and nurturing environment where supervision, interaction and activities help the child feel welcome in a safe environment.
Nursery Donations Nursery service is provided to our parishioners and volunteers without an established fee. However, because our nursery workers are paid employees (not volunteers), we ask for monetary donations to defray the cost of running the nursery. Your contributions help ensure that this valuable ministry is accessible for all. Donations may be made by cash, check or online at www.stjudeparish.com/online-giving.
Now Hiring Nursery Workers! Do you enjoy working with younger children?
Would you like to earn some extra money? We are hiring!
Nursery workers are needed for shifts during all weekend masses, as well weekday and evening activities. Individuals interested in applying for a nursery staff position are required to undergo the Safe Environment Screening process through Peggy Runnels, the Safe Environment Director at St. Jude. In addition, applicants must fill out an application with references, undergo an interview and complete a CPR certification course. If you are interested in applying, please contact Sara Walsh in the Parish Office at 972-727-1177.
