Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2018
Reflection for 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time Mark's Gospel tells about the end times, when the sun will be darkened, the moon won't give light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in heaven will be shaken. But this dark apocalyptic message brings us not only an expectation of the light to come, but also enlightenment and hope in the darkness itself. Jesus’ pro-nouncement about the end times comes just before the last supper with the apostles, leading up to his passion, death, and resurrection, a very dark time in Jesus’ life. American poet Mary Oliver writes about darkness in her poem entitled “The Uses of Sorrow.” This poem came to her in a dream after the death of her life-long com-panion. She writes: “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.” The love we're called to as Christ's disciples, as human beings, can bring us joy, but our experiences as disciples of Christ can also bring pain and darkness; all this is part of our journey. We can relate this to the darkness that the original group of Christ’s disciples experienced when their Savior and Redeemer was brutally killed on the cross. When loss occurs in the death of a loved one or when we grieve and mourn, we feel an emptiness in the pit of our hearts. Yet, when we celebrate the life of our deceased loved one, we see how that life was a gift to us and a gift to our world. A box full of darkness may not seem like a gift at all, especially as we struggle to come to terms with the darkness and loss. In time, darkness can give way to awareness, forgiveness, and peace. We then can ap-preciate what comes out of the darkness and what we can gain from it. When we gather together around the Lord's table to celebrate the Eucharist, we remember how Jesus faced the darkness. We remember and give thanks for the gifts that he brought out of the darkness. We celebrate Christ’s death and resurrection with the hope that it gives us to face the darkness in our own lives. We’re called to gain understanding from the darkness, and to hold fast to the light that Christ is to us and to our world. As we mark the end of our liturgical year next week, perhaps we’re at a point when we’re experiencing great darkness in our lives. But we'll enter a peri-od of waiting in the beginning of the new liturgical year in Advent with the promise of a great light in the birth of Christ. We trust that the darkness is perhaps not what it seems on the surface, that it won’t be permanent. We’re called to have hope in our faith, as God promises us hope in the midst of the brokenness and darkness of our world. Our hope goes beyond our words and prayers; it is the light of Christ shining in the darkness.

Stewardship Thought The readings today speak of the end of the world and the coming of the kingdom. The bishops’ pastoral on stewardship says clearly that “that ‘life to come’ is in continuity with this present life through the hu-man goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now.” May our good stewardship help us to be numbered among the chosen on the last day!

FAITH FORMATION INFORMATION
Youth Christmas Choir
Voices are needed to make a joyful noise to the Lord! Youth of all ages are needed to sing in our Christmas
Eve Choir. The choir will sing at 5:30pm Mass on Christmas Eve.
We will have three practices:
Sunday, December 16th - 10:20am - During Sunday School - We will bring those students singing in the choir to the youth room
in the Parish Hall to practice. Children can be picked up from the Parish Hall at 10:50am.
Wednesday, December 19th – 6:30-7:30pm – In the church. Following practice, we will feed the choir a pizza supper.
Sunday, December 23rd – 9:45 -10:30am - In the Parish Hall. We will have donuts upon arrival (coffee for parents).
If your youth likes to sing, please encourage them to participate. We especially need older voices, so if your older youth sings
in a choir at school or enjoys singing, please encourage them to participate as well.
Contact Stacy in the office if your youth plans to participate – we need to know who to release from Sunday School on the 16th
and how much pizza to provide on the 19th.
Federal agents served search and seizure warrants on the chancery office and on St. Joseph Parish in Starkville on Wednesday, No-vember 7. Their investigation centers on the financial activities of Father Lenin Vargas. As of this posting, no charges have been filed.
On Saturday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 11, Father Jeffrey Waldrep shared the following statement with the parishioners of St. Jo-seph in Starkville and Corpus Christi Mission in Macon:
Earlier this week the government began an investigation of the financial administration of Saint Joseph in Starkville. Saint Jo-seph Parish and the Diocese of Jackson are cooperating with the investigation. Pending the resolution of the investigation, Fa-ther Lenin Vargas will not engage in any public ministry, and has been removed from all pastoral and financial administra-tion. In the interim, Father Jeffrey Waldrep, the pastor of Annunciation in Columbus, will serve as administrator and Father Rusty Vincent will be responsible for all pastoral ministry at St. Joseph, Starkville and Corpus Christi, Macon. The continued spir-itual and financial well being of St. Joseph Parish and Corpus Christi Mission is of the utmost importance, and we will continue to aid you both in sound fiscal management of all of your resources. Let us pray with trust that the Lord Jesus will shepherd us through this difficult time of upheaval and uncertainty.
After receiving complaints, Bishop Joseph Kopacz ordered an internal accounting audit of the Starkville Parish’s finances. After Bishop Kopacz’ staff conducted the audit, the Diocese placed fiscal constraints on Father Vargas’ spending and found that he was violating diocesan policy concerning soliciting charitable donations and demanded that he stop these activities and conduct no fur-ther charitable fundraising without first informing the diocese of these planned activities. Federal law, the Health Insurance Porta-bility and Accountability Act, better known as HIPPA, prohibits our discussion of Father Vargas’ medical condition — not only when we first learned of it, but also throughout the time period mentioned in the affidavit. In fact, HIPPA law continues to bind us today in that we can neither admit nor deny anything related to Rev. Vargas’ medical condition.
Media inquiries should be directed to the Office of Communication at 601-969-3581.
We ask that you pray for everyone involved as we continue to work toward a resolution.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
+Joseph R. Kopacz Bishop of Jackson

SPECIAL CHRISTMAS REMEMBRANCE for our DECEASED LOVED ONES
PLEASE RSVP - Thursday, December 13, at 6:30 p.m. - Foley Hall
“An Opportunity to Gather, Remember, Celebrate and Honor our Loved Ones”
We’re all so busy during the Christmas Season. Why not set aside this little bit of time to remember our deceased loved ones? The St. Richard Bereavement Support Group will again hold a special Candle-light Remembrance Celebration on Thursday, December 13, at 6:30 p.m. in Foley Hall. There will be a discussion of various ways to honor our deceased loved ones followed by a brief Candle-lighting Prayer Service. Each family or person will be given one candle to light in honor of as many loved ones as they wish to remember by name. You may then take your candle home to light again at Christmas. A social time of wine and cheese and other refreshments follows the service. It is a very beautiful and comforting time for all.
PLEASE invite your family members or someone you know who would like to remember a loved one, and please RSVP right away so that we will have an idea of how many to plan for and the number of candles needed. It is open to all, regardless of how long ago the death occurred or your church affiliation. If you have questions, just need to talk to someone, or to RSVP, please call Linda Lalor 601-853-8840, Suzie Cranston 601-982-5464, Nancy McGhee 601-942-2078, or email [email protected].
