Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 15, 2020

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We Pray for the Deceased

Please pray for these members of our parish family who passed away recently:

Rogelio Gomez Camarillo Rafael Casarez Barbara Prado Isabel Ramirez

May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

ADVENT MORNING OF REFLECTION

Advent is the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. It is a time the Church gives us to prepare ourselves for the coming of our Lord. This is a preparation not just for His birth on Christmas but also a preparation for His Second Coming. During Advent, we sing the song: “Oh Come, oh come Emmanuel.” It is the yearning of His coming to bring light to the world. This year it will be a particularly trying time because Christmas will be different, not like we are used to.

Join us on Saturday, December 5, for a morning of reflection. The reflections will be both in English and in Spanish. Spanish: 9:00 AM in the shelter with Fr. Alejandro and Deacon Ramon.

English: 11:00 AM in the church with Fr. Nicolas and Fr. Sergio.

THANKSGIVING MASS

Thanksgiving Day is on November 26. We will be having a bilingual Mass at 9:00 AM. Like other years we will be collecting canned goods and nonperishable food for our Saint Vincent De Paul group. Decorated boxes prepared by our par-ish school students will be located in different places around the shelter area to deposit food donations. To try to avoid people crossing each other, we will not be asking you to come forward during the collec-tion to put your food donations in the boxes. In-stead, as you arrive for Mass, find the nearest box near you and deposit it there. The collection for this Mass during the Offertory will be for our Saint Vincent de Paul group.

PREPARING FOR MASS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS

We have been able to have weekday Masses inside the church as attendance does not exceed 100 peo-ple, which is the limit we can have inside the church. However, with more parishioners attending the Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses, we have been thinking of ways to accommodate all those who come in case of rain and being exceedingly cold to be in the shelter. The Parish Hall and Hope rooms have been prepared with a TV screen to view the livestream in the church. During commun-ion, a minister will go to the rooms and give them communion.

For this to succeed, we need a team of volunteers who can commit to livestreaming one or two Mass-es on Sunday. No experience necessary. Training will be provided. Please contact the parish office if you will like to volunteer.

The plan is also to cover the shelter area and put in heaters. It is something we have to prepare in case indoor services are halted as it did in early July be-cause of the increase of COVID-19 in our County.

If you can donate for tents or provide a heater please call the parish office at 714-774-2595.

RESTARTING 5:00 PM SUNDAY MASS

Attendance to the English services have slightly gone up and so we are considering adding an addi-tional English Mass on Sundays at 5 PM. For this plan to move forward we will be needing a hospitality team, lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. If you would like to help, please call the parish office at 714-774-2595.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU... ...from the bottom of our hearts to Father Kerry and all parishioners who donated to the 8th grade “Pennies from Heaven” drive. We collected a total of 26 baby bottles full of coins and bills, and these were donated to our local shelter for mothers in need, Casa Teresa. We will be run-ning a food drive in November for Saint Vincent De Paul and are collecting donations of toiletries and nonperishable food items if you are interest-ed in donating. Please drop them by the school by November 23rd. God bless you!

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING IN PERSON FOR MASS

Taken from the “Letter of Cardinal Robert Sarah on ‘Let us Return to the Eucharist with Joy’”:

The pandemic caused by the Covid 19 virus has produced upheavals not only in social, family, economic, educational, and work dynamics, but also in the life of the Christian com-munity, including the liturgical dimension. To prevent the spread of the virus, rigid social distancing was neces-sary...This Congregation is deeply grateful to the Bishops for their commitment and effort in trying to respond in the best possible way to an unforeseen and complex situation. As soon as circumstances permit, however, it is necessary and urgent to return to the normality of Christian life, which has the church building as its home and the celebration of the liturgy, especially the Eucharist, as “the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed, at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 10).

As much as the means of communication perform a valued service to the sick and those who are unable to go to church, and have performed a great service in the broadcast of Holy Mass at a time when there was no possibility of community celebrations, no broadcast is comparable to personal partic-ipation or can replace it. On the contrary, these broadcasts alone risk distancing us from a personal and intimate en-counter with the incarnate God who gave himself to us not in a virtual way, but really, saying: “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him” (Jn 6:56). This physical contact with the Lord is vital, indispensable, irre-placeable. Once the concrete measures that can be taken to reduce the spread of the virus to a minimum have been iden-tified and adopted, it is necessary that all resume their place in the assembly of brothers and sisters, rediscover the irre-placeable preciousness and beauty of the celebration of the liturgy, and invite and encourage again those brothers and sisters have been discouraged, frightened, absent or unin-volved for too long.

The Church unites proclamation and accompaniment to-wards the eternal salvation of souls with the necessary con-cern for public health. Let us therefore continue to entrust ourselves confidently to God’s mercy, to invoke the interces-sion of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

We hope that even with having some parishioners partici-pate during Mass at the parish hall or in the Hope room, it will still be a full participation than simply “viewing” Mass at home. We will continue to try to find the best possible way to make sure all feel at home in the House of God and change things if we have to. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The woman who fears the LORD is to be praised (Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31). Psalm — Blessed are those who fear the Lord (Psalm 128). Second Reading —Brothers and sisters, you are children of the light (1 Thessalo-nians 5:1-6). Gospel — Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibili-ties (Matthew 25:14-30 [14-15, 19-21]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

respond to God in the parable of the talents. The Gospel is presented in long and shortened versions; be sure to read the whole thing so you can get “the rest of the story.”

REMAIN IN ME In the story of the talents, the head of the household leaves the serv-ants “talents” or money, which they are expected to foster and devel-op during the leader’s absence. Today we think of talent as an innate ability or a skill. It is interesting that they were distributed “according to ability,” which would express a certain intimacy as we realize that the master knew each one, and already had an idea of their capabili-ties. They were not given explicit instructions like “put this in the bank” or “invest this in your portfolio” or “take piano lessons.” Ra-ther, we are told that the goods were divided unequally. One received five, one received two, and the last received one.

BEAR MUCH FRUIT When the head of the household returned, the outcomes were just as varied as we and our responses might be. Some people are multital-ented, and capable of accomplishing many great things, like the serv-ant who turned five into ten. Others may be more inclined to do one or two things very well and may excel in them. Still, there are some who may struggle in life, and their accomplishments are very small. But those who made use of their gifts were praised and told, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” When it came to the second coming, the return of their master, they both made some effort. The only one in whom the head of household showed any disappointment was the one who made absolutely no effort, the one who was frozen by fear or indifference. As we journey toward the kingdom, there are not al-ways clear instructions. We are simply asked to try, to give it our best effort. There is nothing in the passage to say that these servants didn’t make mistakes along the way, but their master saw them and loved and praised them for their actions, their attempts, as God will do with us. And now you know the rest of the story.

CHANGE OUR LIVES The letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are among his earliest writ-ings, and are driven by his belief and the belief of the entire early Christian community that the return of Christ was imminent, and that devoting time or attention to anything else was foolish.

As time progressed, this fervor subsided a bit. Today we may wonder, when we hear these readings about the coming end-times, if we should take them to heart, if we really believe that Christ still may come upon us as a “thief at night” (1 Thessalonians 5:2). Does this mean that we are to stop our long-range goal-setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and planners, or stop putting money in the college education fund? Of course not. What it does mean is that we need to change our lives, liv-ing like children of the light and illuminating the world around us with the light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when the details of our daily living become unimportant, we will be ready to find our peace and se-curity in Christ Jesus.

P aul Harvey was a popular radio broadcast-er with a daily program during which he

would relate a historical anecdote, but it would have a twist at the end, and then he would in-tone “and now you know the rest of the story.” Our scriptures today are like that. We await the coming Christ as the readings describe for us how to be good servants, but they give us a limited picture. The famous Proverbs passage, “The Valiant Wife” is edited down from the full selection (31:10–31) to just a few verses. Take a couple moments to explore the fuller selection. Psalm 128 proclaims, “Blessed are those who fear the Lord,” but in this context “fear” doesn’t mean dread and trepidation. Rather, this kind of fear means “to show awe,” and there are wonderful promises made to those who do. The letter to the Thessalonians continues the call to be alert, and Matthew shows us various ways that people might
