Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s first reading, God tells the prophet Elijah to prepare Elisha to succeed him. Succeeding Elijah will be no easy task; he has spent his life facing threats from the kings he has confronted about their infidelity to the God of Israel. The psalm illustrates the emotional and spiritual distress that the prophets’ steadfast faithfulness to God brought them. Paul’s description of the Christian’s freedom from the law as opposed to “the desire of the flesh” puts this struggle at the very heart of Christian identity. The reading from Luke’s Gospel recounts Jesus’ decision to journey toward Jerusalem, where he knows he will meet his earthly fate. Following Jesus—like succeeding Elijah as prophet—will now become more difficult. Unlike his calls to the first disciples, Jesus encounters those who are not ready or are not strong enough to journey with him. WE ARE CALLED How do we know when we are being called by God? Sometimes a call is very clear: this is what we need to do. Other times a call may be less obvious, and it may take more time to discern such a call. What is certain is that each of us will be called, at different times and in different ways, according to our personal strengths and weaknesses. While the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah were called in dramatic visions, Elisha’s call came with a simple but singular event: the prophet Elijah approached him as he was plowing and “threw his cloak over him” (1 Kings 19:19). Elisha immediately understood—this was a sign he was to follow Elijah and inherit his mantle as prophet.
We are familiar with how, at the beginning of his ministry, Jesus called the fishermen to follow him and how they dropped everything to do so. The events in today’s Gospel happen much later, after Jesus has determined he is to go to Jerusalem, and—Luke informs the reader—there are already forebodings about his fate. Jesus is well enough known that some people approach him and want to go with him, but they are met with warnings about the difficulties that lie ahead. Others summoned by Jesus want to say good-bye to their families first; Jesus shrugs them off and continues on without them. The urgency of the task ahead demands immediate and total dedication. HOW CAN YOU TELL? One of the ways the Spirit is constantly breathing new life into the Church is in the practice of spiritual direction. In addition to our personal prayer, spiritual directors can provide support for discerning the promptings of the Spirit in our lives. Benedictines, Dominicans, and Jesuits are known for their work in spiritual direction and in training others as directors. By now the Church is blessed with any number of priests, sisters, and lay people who help others discern and respond with the strength and dedication required to follow Jesus, wherever the journey may take us. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Processions are life’s journey distilled. We move with companions, aware that Christ accompanies us, as we move to the altar for Communion or to the font for baptism, or carry a loved one to a place of rest. In Europe, the season of pilgrimage is beginning now, and tens of thousands of people are moving by foot on well-worn paths. Some take as long as six weeks to walk the last few hundred miles of the medieval pilgrimage route to the Shrine of St. James the Apostle in Compostella, in northern Spain. Those who make the journey by foot, hiking, or by bicycle, have a kind of passport stamped at villages and monasteries on the road. When they present this document at the cathedral, they are given the emblem of a pilgrim, the scallop shell of St. James. High over their heads at Mass, a huge botafumero twirls clouds of sweet incense through the cathedral. Cynics say it is to mask the odor of smelly feet. The pilgrims know better. Seeing through the clouds the happy faces of those they met along the road, they recognize a foretaste of the welcome into heaven, and the joy of meeting loved ones in the Kingdom of God. —James Field, Copyright © J. While the Diocese of San Jose will always continue to uphold the highest standards of safety and
protection for our children, Senate Bill 360 is a clear affront against the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the
Seal of Confession. We urge all Catholics to call our local Assembly members, to urge them to vote NO
on this assault against the freedom of religion.
What to do? Encourage your community to call TODAY! What to say? (See below) Option 1 (name) "My name is _______ from zip code (#####) and I urge Assembly Member _______ to vote NO on SB 360 because it is an assault against the freedom of religion." Option 2 (anonymous) "I am a Catholic community member from zip code (#####) and I urge Assembly Member _________ to vote NO against SB 360, because it attacks the freedom of religion.”
Founding Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose Pierre DuMaine passed
away peacefully
Most Reverend R. Pierre DuMaine
Born ~ August 2, 1931
Ordained a Priest ~ June 15, 1957
Ordained a Bishop ~ June 29, 1978
Born to Eternal Life ~ June 13, 2019
Roland Pierre DuMaine, son of Nolan Amidee DuMaine and Mary Eulalia Burch, was born in Paducah, Kentucky on August 2, 1931.
After attending Saint Mary’s Academy in Paducah and Holy Family School in Glendale, California, he entered Saint Joseph’s College Seminary, Mountain View, and Saint Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park.
Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on June 15, 1957, Father DuMaine served as assistant pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Belmont before he was assigned to graduate studies at the Catholic University of America, from 1958-1961. After receiving a doctoral degree in Education, he served on the faculty of Catholic University and Serra High School in San Mateo, was Archdiocesan Assistant Superintendent of Schools and Superintendent from 1965 until 1978, having been named a Prelate of Honor of his Holiness (Monsignor) in 1972.
Bishop DuMaine was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco on June 29, 1978, serving in that capacity until March 18, 1981, when he became the Founding Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose.
Amidst great difficulties, Bishop DuMaine succeeded in the largest privately funded renewal project of downtown San Jose: the restoration of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph. These efforts insured that the Cathedral Basilica survived the 1989 earthquake and became what it is to this very day: the crown jewel of downtown San Jose.
On November 27, 1999, the Holy See accepted the bishop’s request for retirement. After retirement, he served as visiting professor at both Santa Clara University and Stanford University. Bishop DuMaine will long be remembered for his dedication to the teachings and principles put forth by the Second Vatican Council. Among these were the call to holiness that is extended to all the baptized, the inclusion of lay and religious women and men in decision-making positions within the Church, and a commitment to Catholic Education and Formation in all of its forms.
A visionary who recognized the significant role of technology in social communications and the Church’s mission of evangelization, Bishop DuMaine served as chair of the United States Bishops’ Committee on Communications, as a member of the Pontifical Commission on Social Communications, and as a director and longtime supporter of the Catholic Television Network (CTN), a closed-circuit network serving Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the dioceses of San Jose and Oakland.
He was a man of great intelligence and wit and will long be missed by his family and by his many friends and collaborators.
*Donations in Bishop DuMaine’s memory may be made to the Priests’ Retirement Fund or the Catholic School Scholarship Fund, both in care of The Diocese of San Jose 1150 North First Street, Suite 100, San Jose, CA 95112-4966.
