the Councils of Nicaea [325] and Constantinople [381] to define the mystery we are currently celebrating: the Incarnation: God truly became flesh, a man, one of us, in Jesus. That made Mary the Mother of God, not just Jesus, a dogma hammered out [almost literally!] at the Council of Ephesus in 431. Do we appreciate how well-developed our Catholic Faith truly is?
This dovetails with Saints Basil and Gregory who strove to outdo each other, for the good of the Church, in their studies and teachings. They did not let petty jealousy, resentment or other issues taint their brotherly love for each other. They saw the other’s successes as his own. We should all strive to learn that lesson from them.
GOD GIVES BACK EVEN MORE FROM WHAT WE
OFFER TO HIM. The more these men used their God-given talents, the more they grew in faith, and the deeper they fell in love with the Church and each other. Would that we have a similar experience as we try to better understand, celebrate and share our Faith! What God given gifts is Jesus waiting for you to use, so your faith, hope and love can grow?
FOLLOW GOD’S LEAD EVERY DAY OF 2019. Through His Church, God offers us ‘brain food’ [the Bible and Church teaching] and ‘soul food’ [the Eucharist] to lead and guide us. Will these be a regular part of your diet every day of 2019? Happy New Year 2019! Saints Basil and Gregory, pray for us! In Christ,
Prayer over the Offerings - Saints Basil & Gregory Accept this sacrifice from your people, we pray,
O Lord, and make what is offered for your glory,
in honor of Saints Basil and Gregory,
a means to our eternal salvation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer after Communion - Saints Basil & Gregory May partaking at the heavenly table,
almighty God, confirm and increase strength
from on high in all who celebrate the feast day
of Saints Basil and Gregory, that we may preserve in integrity the gift of faith and
walk in the path of salvation you trace for us.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
From the Pastor The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph - C December 30, 2018
We start the New Year by honoring the woman whose faith made Christmas possible: Mary, the holy Mother of God, on January 1, a holyday of obligation
and last of the octave or eight-days of Christmas. Then we honor Saints Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen, Bishops and Doctors of the Church, on January 2. Both were born in Cappadocia, Turkey and were Eastern Catholics, a confusing term to Roman Catholics.
The 1.2 billion members of the Catholic Church are in 24 Rites, each with its own liturgy and other variations. We belong to the Western or Latin Rite, which has its own Canon or Church Law that sets how we perform Sacraments, require celibacy, etc. [Eastern Catholic Priests may be married.] But since we are all ‘under’ the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, and agree on all main dogmas, we MAY receive Holy Communion in Eastern Catholic Churches. What do Saints Basil [329 to January 1, 379] and Gregory [329 to January 25, 390], who were close friends and shared time together in monastic life, teach us - whose world and Church are so different from the world and Church in which they lived? Not much has really changed over all these years! Here are their Mass orations.
HEALTHY COMPETITION IS A GOOD THING. In the 300’s, Eastern Catholics had a firmer founda-tion in theology and liturgy as the Roman Empire halted Western Catholic advancements. Our first 7 of 21 Ecumenical Councils [meetings of Bishops and theologians who addressed heresies, set rubrics and laws, etc.] took place in her Eastern half. In fact, Saint Basil drafted the basis of, and Saint Gregory put the finishing touches on, the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed we profess at Mass. It was ’composed’ at
Collect - Saints Basil the Great & Gregory Nazianzen
Bishops & Doctors of the Church
O God, who were pleased to give light to your
Church by the example and teaching of the Bishops Saints Basil and Gregory, grant,
we pray, that in humility we may learn
your truth and practice it faithfully in charity.
Through our Lord Jesus … forever and ever.

Holy Family Prayer
MARY, Mother of Jesus and Our Mother, nourish our family with your faith and your love.
Keep us close to your Son, Jesus, in all our sorrows and joys.
JOSEPH, Foster-father to Jesus,
guardian and spouse of Mary, keep our family safe from harm.
Help us in all times of discouragement or anxiety.
HOLY FAMILY OF NAZARETH, make our family one with you.
Help us to be instruments of peace. Grant that love, strengthened by grace, may prove mightier than all the weaknesses and trials through
which our families sometimes pass. May we always have God at the center of our hearts
and homes until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our true home with you.
Amen.
