—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, there was the usual buzz of speculation about likely successors. Cardinal Agajanian, Patri-arch of the Armenians, was highly thought of as a likely choice. This took many Catholics by surprise, since he had never cele-brated the same liturgy as Pope Pius, but followed ancient Ar-menian customs according to the Eastern Church, which veils the Eucharisic liturgy from sight by a series of curtains, and in which the priest kneels while the people stand for Communion. In the years that followed, the Second Vatican Council would affirm the dignity and independence of the Eastern Churches, in complete union with Rome, yet different in patterns of life and worship. We have the same faith, the same sacraments, and the same pope. Yet everywhere in the world our separate Churches are combined into families held together by the minis-try of bishops. All of this serves as warning: If you ever say, “But we’ve always done it this way,” you are on very thin ice indeed! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

He is pleased to give you the kingdom “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the Kingdom.” This passage from Sunday’s Gospel rocked my world back in 2012. I was on a three day silent retreat and the Bible in my room was open to this passage, so I figured I would just sit with it. Over those three days, the Lord started to take the scales from my eyes and reveal to me the incredible love God has for me. This passage pierced through all of my fears and anxieties. It got to the very root of my understanding of God’s goodness. Because there were often times in my life that I could speak about God’s goodness in a general way or as it applied to other people's lives, but I rarely felt that God’s goodness was something that was directed towards me. This is where the passage quoted above started to shift my understanding. It is not that God simply loves me and is good. But rather He is PLEASED to give me the kingdom! He wants to give me the kingdom. He can’t wait to give me the kingdom. There is nothing I can do to earn the kingdom. Sometimes we complicate it. Sometimes we disbelieve it and think I have to work for it. Sometimes life comes crashing down on us or our circumstances always seem to point the other way, so we resign that “God is good” but not to me. This passage brings all those walls to the ground! He delights to give you the gift of the kingdom. And when we start to accept this, when we start to delight in Him delighting in us, then we no longer become afraid to give Him our yes. Then, we are no longer afraid to walk where He calls us because He is the GOOD SHEP-HERD and we are indeed His little flock.
