COMPENDIUM OF CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH THE MORAL CONSCIENCE

THE MORALITY OF THE PASSIONS 376. CAN A MORAL CONSCIENCE MAKE ERRONEOUS JUDGMENTS? A person must always obey the certain judgment of his own conscience but he could make erroneous judgments for reasons that may not always exempt him from personal guilt. However, an evil act committed through involuntary ignorance is not imputable to the person, even though the act remains objectively evil. One must therefore work to correct the errors of moral conscience. .

TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: "Too much information!" We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don't want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it's about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John's outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been "too much information" for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem "too much" for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the phrase “the Catholic vote” is heard. It’s an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by 1830. It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to “every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism.” Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country . —Rev.

NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK—NOVEMBER 4TH-10TH National Vocation Awareness Week is being celebrated November 2-10. This annual observance of the Catholic Church in the United States is designed to focus on vocations to the priesthood, religious life and diaconate. It is a time to encourage young people to ask themselves: “To what vocation in life is God calling me?” It is also an opportunity to bring awareness to and pray for those already in discernment of one of these vocations. Parishes and schools are encouraged to include, during the first week in November, prayer and special activities that focus on vocation awareness.

During National Vocation Awareness Week, we encourage all Catholics to:

Take time to pray for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.

Reflect on our own vocation and strengthen our personal relationship with Christ.

Participate in the CALLED BY NAME process

Invite and encourage young people to consider a vocation to priesthood or religious life and to consider participating in our discernment opportunities

Educate our young people about the importance of silent prayer and taking the time to truly listen to God’s voice in our hearts

Every Catholic parish and school in invited to incorporate “Vocation Lessons” into their curriculum. These materials have been provided by the vocations office.

DIOCESAN PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women from the Diocese of

Owensboro to serve in your Son’s kingdom as priests, deacons and religious

We pray that you continue to inspire young men and women to respond courageously to your call and give

themselves generously to the Church in service of the Gospel.

Pour out your Holy Spirit upon our parishes, schools, and families and assist

us in building a culture of vocations in which many will hear your call to serve

your people.

Help us to remain faithful to the call of the Gospel as we support and encourage

vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through Christ our Lord

Amen

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
