Reflection

THE WORD OF GOD UNCHAINED

There is no chaining the word of God! But how many times do we attempt to do that very thing? Had the followers of Jesus or the teachers of the law or the Pharisees been asked if the lepers should be cleansed or healed, the answer would most likely have been, “No, they deserve their condition.”

The lepers would have been, perhaps, a mixed group, Galileans and Samaritans alike, the bond of their awful disease overcoming the pettiness of former religious bickering. Jesus’ actions once again illustrate his vocation and ours: to

reach out when healing is needed, to challenge when conversion is needed, to console when comfort is needed. He also follows his own advice from last week’s Gospel: do what you have been commanded to do. When the cleansed Samaritan has returned to give thanks, Jesus does not take it as an opportunity for self-aggrandizement, but rather offers insight into faith.

Blessing of the Animals

For those of us who have much loved pets, on October 6th, this was a time that we came together with others and seek God's blessings. We want to thank all of you who came to our Blessing of the Animals celebration and for thanking God for the gift of all creation, especially for our animals, who bring so much joy into each of our lives.

Parishioner, Seminarian Stephen Lilly Thanks the Parish:

Dear Fr. Roger and the Parishioners of St. Leonard Parish,

I would like to thank you very much for your response to the recent appeal for donations of socks and underwear. Your generosity and concern for our homeless brothers and sisters is a wonderful witness of Christian charity. I am exceedingly impressed. In total, 346 pairs of underwear, 115 shirts, 738 pairs of socks, and $120 were donated for those individuals that are spending the night sleeping on the streets of Chicago. These items will be distributed in the coming months as they are needed, and I know that they will be well-received. Again thank you for your support for this ministry, and please remember those that are homeless in your prayers.

God Bless! Stephen Lilly

HOLY NAME OCTOBER PRESS RELEASE

Another year of Scouting is beginning for our St. Leonard children. It is a little known fact that each Scouting organization including Cub Scouts, Girl

Scouts, and Boy Scouts must pay the Scouting councils a charter fee each year. The St. Leonard Holy Name Society has always paid those fees. Last year the fees amounted to $1270 for Cub Scouts, $1600 for Girl Scouts, and $1170 for Boy Scouts. If the Holy Name Society had not covered those fees the cost would have been borne by the parents.

It is in the interest of every scouting parent to become a member of the Holy Name Society. If you haven’t joined yet, please come to the meeting on Monday, October

14th at 7:30pm. Your $15 membership dues help us to continue our mission of support to the children of St. Leonard.

Boy Scout Troop 32 is Celebrating Its

75th Anniversary

Troop 32 is one of the oldest continuous-running Boy Scout troops in the area. The organization is committed to teaching our young men the virtues of community service and self-improvement. St. Leonard School students and alumni constitute the majority of the troop and many of our fellow parishioners are volunteer leaders. The troop is sponsored the St. Leonard Holy Name Society. In honor of its 75th anniversary, the troop is holding a celebratory dinner on Saturday, November 2nd, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the school hall. Those wishing to attend should contact the troop at [email protected] for further details.

Port Ministries Summer

Mission – 2013 Reporting Back – 5th in a

Series

This summer a group of teenagers and adults from St. Leonard attended Port Ministries in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. We had the opportunity to work with toddlers, preschoolers, and grade school children. I didn't work with the toddlers but was able to help with the preschoolers. The preschoolers were smart and well behaved. I enjoyed working on puzzles and board games with them. I also read books and helped them identify different animals in the books. We then turned to the group educational part of the morning. The children were able to count all of the days in the month of July and recite the days of the week. While they counted with their teacher, I helped set up snack for the preschoolers. The children ate watermelon and granola bars and drank juice. The preschoolers were well mannered when asking for more juice. I was surprised by how well they behaved during snack time. Port Ministries not only teaches the children academic studies, but life skills too. If the children didn't finish their food they would save the rest for their parents when they came to pick them up at the end of the day. I was happy to see that Port Ministries does not waste food because most people would have thrown out the extra bit. Port Ministries relies on generous donations of food to provide this successful program to the neighborhood children. After spending the week at Port Ministries I realized that every donation and every little bit of time spent with these children makes a difference in their lives and helps them in a big way. I believe the children truly appreciated having us there and I look forward to helping them again next summer.

CROP Hunger Walk –

Next Sunday, October 20th Immediately after the 12

noon mass

We need walkers!! Please consider dedicating a few hours to walk to alleviate hunger in the world and in our community!! CRS runs a food program in this section of Chad which helps about 60,000 people. In one of the most remote places on Earth, a woman bends down to hitch a sack of millet onto her back. Fatime is 65 years old. She’s at the market in Minekrate, a village in Eastern Chad. She has walked here today. The sun is unrelenting and the temperatures are in the 100s. Fatime’s husband died five years ago, after a long illness. She now has 9 children in her care. She’s here today to get them some food.

The harvests were bad last year because good rains didn’t come. Some days Fatime and the children eat five and a half pounds of millet between them. They make porridge

and bread from it. Some days it’s half that; two pounds of cereal between ten people. But today Fatime has brought to market the food vouchers that CRS has given her. CRS works hand-in-hand with the Chadian Catholic charity SECADEV to reach around ten thousand of the most struggling households. Fatime uses her vouchers to choose the food her family needs. It will more than double the amount of millet they have. She’s hoping rains this year will mean she can grow a few onions and tomatoes and some millet of her own. It’s still not much to live off, but it’s better than before. Fatime thanks God that she has the children around her and that she now has help with putting food on the table. “My hope lies with my God, the Creator. May He keep safe those who help us.” The CROP Walk supports the work of Church World Service (CWS), and if chosen as a recipient of your donation, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) throughout the developing world. Please register at the back of church to participate in the CROP Walk. Together, we can make a difference! For more information call Julie in the parish office, 708-484-0015.
