Hope and Life
T oday’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of
Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope.
Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading.
What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News.
Do you want to get more involved and volunteer with St. Leonard Parish to help our community?
Once a month, St. Leonard Parish sends a group to volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD). The time that we volunteer at the GCFD helps not only this wonderful organization, but also earns food credits for Catholic Charities. Some of the things we do include repacking bulk products to individual/family size cartons,
assembling boxes with assorted food, checking expiration dates and labeling. We work for about 3 hours on a Wednesday evening. It is a very rewarding experience and a great way to get to know your fellow parishioners.
The following dates are scheduled: • Wednesday, June 19, 2013 • Wednesday, July 10, 2013
If you would like to volunteer, please call Beth Kleisner at 708-979-3537 or email her at [email protected]. Thank you for your interest!!

Annual Food Drive
Congratulations to St. Leonard Youth Ministry members Christian Chavez, Maryfer Galindo, and MaryJane Lukas who were accepted to the Peacebuilders Initiative for the 2013-2014 year! We are very proud to have them represent St. Leonard in this prestigious program for high school students who are active leaders in the Catholic Church! As part of the program, our three parishioners will spend a week at Catholic Theological Union, a graduate school for theology and ministry. While there, they will take classes from C.T.U. professors, engage in service around Chicago, and meet other teens who have similar ideals and passions. Well done Chris, Maryfer, and MaryJane!!!
THANKS TO ALL WHO MADE THE ANNUAL POSTAL FOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS!!
The week prior to May 11th Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, food pantry volunteers and others went door-to-door passing out bags for the Annual Postal Food Drive. On the morning of May 11th the same people picked up any donations that had been left on the porches. For me personally, I was brought back to my childhood, creeping down the stairs on Christmas morning, wondering what would be under the tree. As we drove up and down the streets, I was deeply touched by the generosity of these anonymous neighbors. People had received a labeled bag on their doorknob. They made a trip to the store and filled it with food needed by unknown neighbors. Those of us who collected the food experienced the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish. I never cease to be amazed by the generosity of St. Leonard parishioners and people in general.
A big THANK YOU to all who put the bags out and picked them up, and to all who left bags of groceries on your front porch. I don’t have all the names of the Scouts and their leaders but please know a big CALL OUT goes to you for your invaluable efforts!! Later in the afternoon, a different crew headed over to the Post Office to receive the portion of food allocated for our Food Pantry. The following week food was sorted which is a necessary, but tedious task. In addition to the Scouts we thank volunteers Marilyn Pavlik, Eva Cervantes, Dorothy Lucas, Mary Jo Garro, Jim Claussen, Santiago (Jim) Ramos, Tom Ward, Ariel Diaz, Andy Dobrowski, Jeff Braun, Sr. and Jr., Kevin O’Halloran, Eduardo, Susan, Isabel, Susan, Jr., and Sara Mijangos, Brandon Hernandez, Jose and Gabriel Castillo, Virginia, Magdalena and Reyna Saavedra, Diane Minarik, Bob Huber, Maria Lloyd, and LesLea McGuire.

The Port Clinic can use the services of doctors, nurses, or medical personnel. If the Lord is calling you to volunteer your time this summer, in the context of our parish mission experience, please call Julie in the parish office at (708) 484-0015. (Number of days of participation is flexible.) For more information on Port Ministries visit: www.theportministries.org
