St. Louis Chapter of the Geo-Institute Monthly Meeting Minutes Meeting Date and Time: April 9, 2014, 7:30am Meeting Location: PSI Office, 8669 Olive Boulevard Conference Call #: 1-800-503-2899 (Access # 8022920) Meeting Attendees: Nicholas Roth (Chair), Dennis Boll (Vice Chair), Shari Cunningham

1. Case Histories Seminar - Recap a. Event was held Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Engineer’s Club b. Approximately 52 attended, including 3 scheduled speakers and 6 student posters. Cost

was $25 per person and $15 for students, no charge for scheduled speakers or students with posters. Committee presented $20 gift cards to Barnes & Noble to the students with posters. Buffet dinner was served. Corporate sponsorships were provided by Subsurface Constructors and Hayward Baker.

c. Lyle has not received the invoice from the Engineer’s Club or catering company. d. Discussion for future Case Histories:

i. Reach out to other potential corporate sponsors. ii. Review income & expenses from this year when setting the price for next year,

and consider raising the price slightly since buffet dinner was served instead of appetizers.

iii. Student posters – consider restricting the number of posters to 9 (3 each from MS&T, MU, and SIUE) instead of 12; consider eliminating the poster presentations and instead have posters on display in the lobby/bar area for attendees to visit one-on-one with the students; if budget is a concern, consider eliminating gift cards for students.

iv. Schedule – consider registration from 5:00pm to 5:30pm with posters on display, dinner buffet starts at 5:45 in the auditorium, then 3 speakers @ 40 minutes each beginning at 6:00pm. Other considerations – brief break between speakers, student posters remain on display at the end of the night for additional discussion.

Schaeffer, Pat Kinsella, Erik Loehr 1. GeoInstitute Committee Budget, 2014-2015 Fiscal Year

a. A draft budget was emailed to committee members before the meeting. b. Discussed the anticipated expenses and income from each planned event. An addition was

made to the budget for a panel discussion event that could address concerns with driven pile design using LRFD methods.

c. A revised budget was voted on and passed. Shari will submit the budget to Lyle Simonton for review by the board.

2. GeoInstitute Committee Funds

a. Income and expenses from 2013 GeoConfluence and 2014 Case Histories events have been finalized. As of 4/30/2014, the G-I committee has a net surplus of approximately $4,600 for the current fiscal year ending September 30.

b. Committee voted on and passed a motion to request an additional $1,500 be transferred to our investment account at Edward Jones. The transfer will need board approval since it was not budgeted. Shari will submit this request to Lyle Simonton for discussion at an upcoming board meeting.

St. Louis Chapter of the Geo-Institute Monthly Meeting Minutes Meeting Date and Time: September 17, 2014, 7:30am Meeting Location: PSI, 8669 Olive Boulevard, Saint Louis, Missouri 63132 Conference Call #: 1-213-289-9000, Conference ID# 789-7134 Meeting Attendees: Nicholas Roth (Chair), Dennis Boll (Vice Chair), Shari Cunningham

(Secretary/Treasurer), Jake Schaeffer, Lyle Simonton, Jared Holland, Travis Kassebaum, Reza Osouli, Allen Minks, Pat Kinsella (by phone), Erik Loehr (by phone), Jeff Hill (by phone)

1. GeoInstitute Committee Budget, 2014-2015 Fiscal Year

a. Lyle Simonton reported that the GeoInstitute committee budget for the upcoming fiscal year was discussed at the recent board meeting. Final approval of committee and board budgets is expected at the October 7 board meeting.

b. Request to transfer $1,500 to the GeoInstitute committee’s investment account at Edward Jones was approved.

c. Lyle reminded the committee of the board memorandum issued earlier this year regarding the contribution to the ASCE St. Louis Section of 30% of each committee’s net yearly surplus. Transfers to an investment account will not be counted against a yearly surplus to reduce the contribution to the section. A suggestion was made to revise our GeoInstitute committee budget to show 30% of the projected surplus to the section, with any remaining surplus targeted for transfer to the investment account.

d. An abstract submitted by Erik Lohr for GeoConfluence 2014 was not selected for the conference, as the conference committee thought the subject might be better addressed at a separate event. A revised committee budget could reflect anticipated income and expenses for this event. The discussion would focus on site characterization methods, and could include additional presentations or a panel discussion with an engineering consultant, design-build contractor, and/or an owner or owner’s representative. Nick will follow up with Erik about the format, other presenters, and potential dates.

2. GeoConfluence 2014

a. Conference will be Friday, November 7, 2014. Registration and continental breakfast start at 7:30am, with conference proceedings from 8:00am to 4:30pm.

b. Pat reported that the speaker lineup has been finalized, and a flyer with registration information was emailed today to committee members. There will be four invited speakers, three presentations selected from the abstracts submitted, and two student presentations. We were again awarded with the GeoInstitute’s Cross Country lecture by Dr. Ken Stokoe.
