Second Sunday Ordinary Time

January 15, 2017

In this new 2017 year, let us all please be like the shepherds of Bethlehem who go back home rejoicing and proclaiming what we have seen and heard by bringing back someone in our family, friends or someone on our neighborhood block back to our church who has not been coming and bring them home closer to God this new year. Please devote yourselves everyday to Mary via the rosary, praying the Magnificat, Memorare, The Angelus throughout the day or even silently speaking to Mary from our hearts. Jesus is the Lamb of God! John the Baptist's favorite title for Jesus is "the Lamb of God." It also became one of John the Evangelist's favorite titles. He uses it here in his Gospel, and then he used it

again, twenty-nine times, in the Book of Revelation. It brings together three images that would have been familiar to the Jews of those times. By calling Christ the "Lamb of God," St John is telling us that those ancient images are fulfilled in Jesus.

The first image. In the Old Covenant, God required the Jews to sacrifice a lamb twice a day to expiate the sins of the people (cf. Exodus 29:39). So, the lamb symbolized the price to be paid for sin.

The second image. The primary holy day of the Jews is Passover. In the Passover ceremony, each family sacrifices and eats a lamb to recall their liberation from Egypt in the days of Moses. On that night, God allowed the death of all the firstborn children and animals of the Egyptians, but spared those of the Hebrews. In order to indicate which households the angel of death was to skip over, God commanded the Hebrews to kill a lamb and mark their doorposts with its blood. Thus, the Passover lamb signified God's merciful and saving love.

The third image. Finally, a lamb going silently and docilely to be slaughtered is one of the images used to describe the coming Messiah. He was going to take Israel's sins upon himself and wipe them away through his suffering obedience. Therefore, by calling Jesus the "Lamb of God," John reminds us that all of these Old Testament symbols had been pointing towards Christ, the true Savior. Let me illustrate this point using the light of the moon.

Most nights we can look up into the sky and see the glow of the moon. The fuller it is, the more light it sheds on a dark night. Yet that light does not come from the moon; it is reflecting the sun’s light, and its position determines how much it reflects the light of the sun. Sometimes it comes directly between us and the sun, causing a solar eclipse, but even then it cannot completely shut out the light of the sun. Believers are called to reflect the light of Christ in the world; the Second Vatican Council’s dogmatic constitution on the Church is entitled Lumen Gentium: “Christ is the Light of nations. Because this is so, this Sacred Synod gathered together in the Holy Spirit eagerly desires, by proclaiming the Gospel to every creature, to bring the light of Christ to all men, a light brightly visible on the countenance of the Church” (LG 1). If we’re not reflecting the light of Christ to all people, we’re eclipsing Him.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth comes between the sun and the moon, falling into the earth’s shadow. Sometimes this makes the moon seem red. Unlike solar eclipses, which are only seen from small area of the world, lunar eclipses can be seen from anywhere on the night side of the earth. When people try to block out the light of Christ instead of basking in it, spiritual eclipses will occur in the light of day. If that same person focuses so much on the world that the world comes between them and Christ, their visage becomes disfigured, even disturbing, and it’s easy to see how far they are from the light of Jesus. Once again I repeat this saying, if we’re not reflecting the light of Christ to all people, we’re eclipsing Him.

Consider your calling. Career planning is very important and shapes the decisions about where you’re going to live, what you’re going to do, and how you’re going to do it. When you consider your calling, you are considering something much greater and with much richer potential. Paul didn’t realize his calling to be an apostle at first. In the same letter of Paul, we consider today he goes on to remind the Corinthians: “consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth; but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong (1 Corinthians 1:26–27).” You may not become a captain of industry or achieve the highest echelons of power in business or politics, but by living your calling, you give glory to God and yourself. If something is missing and you feel you’re caught up in the rat race, it’s time in prayer to consider your calling: what does the Lord want you to do with your life? Follow and listen to the Lamb of God wherever He goes and wherever He directs us to help proclaim the life of Christ and re-flect His true light from our own personal lives.

St Louis de Montfort, pray for us! Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, pray for us! Have a great week and enjoy life with a great smile and JOY! Pray always!

ST. JOSEPH TABLE

According to legend, the St. Joseph Altar originated in Sicily many centuries ago during

a period of drought and famine. In desperation, the people turned to St. Joseph asking his help. When

the rains finally came and the crops prospered, their prayers were answered. In Thanksgiving, the

community made offerings to St. Joseph of their most prized possession, their food.

The Women’s Auxiliary is organizing a

St. Joseph’s Table at St. Louis de Montfort on Saturday, March 18th to carry on the tradition

and honor St. Joseph.

To make this event an enjoyable and successful get-together for our parish, we are looking for volunteers interested in helping in the planning

of the event.

Our initial planning meeting is going to be held on Wednesday, January 18th in

Quinn Hall at 7:00 PM.

If you are interested in sharing your ideas and helping plan the St. Joseph’s Table, please contact

the parish home and leave your name & phone number OR you can just show up on January 18th!!

All are welcome, we look forward to seeing you
