VISION STATEMENT

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Students,
Congratulations to all our swimmers who performed outstandingly in last week’s
interschool swimming carnival.
Thanks to the many parents who joined us for Harmony Day celebration last
Friday at assembly. For those who missed it, our children paraded their masks
representing their country of birth or that of a loved one in their family. Members
of the student council led the assembly and provided the audience with some
interesting facts about the make-up of our Australian community and how our
culture is continuing to evolve in valuing and respecting the contributions made
by all Australians. We raised a total of $383 which has been added to our Caritas
commitment for the year.
With student workbooks going home last week, hopefully parents had an
opportunity to discuss some of the work being done by children across a range of
subject areas. In today’s newsletter Mr Baker has included a collage of
photographs showing children working on some of the digital learning tasks

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE continued..
At school this week we have been pointing out to children the importance of being punctual to class, both in the
morning at the start of school and after breaks. If you are having some trouble in consistently getting children to
take some ownership of being punctual in the morning, you may be interested in reading the article attached to
today’s newsletter written by Michael Grose, a highly regarded author on parenting in Australia.
It was a tough start to the season for the Docker boys and a pretty difficult one for tipsters too, with some
unexpected results in the first round. As hard as it is for me to say, the Eagles and Geelong look the real deal in
2017.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Contemporary Learning Spaces and Digital Learning
Parents in Year 2 would have noticed an increase in the use of Digital Technology in classrooms this term with
the trial of Seesaw well underway to complement the contemporary learning spaces and activities taking place.
The children have been using the Seesaw app on the iPads as a digital portfolio and share some of the fantastic
work they have been doing in class. Seesaw empowers the students to independently document their learning
and gives them the ability to share their achievements with their parents. It also provides families an immediate
and personalized window into their child’s school day, helping to answer: "What did you do at school today?" It
is wonderful to see so many parents commenting on their child’s work and using Seesaw as an opportunity to
discuss their learning journey.
Last year, students were introduced to basic block coding through Hour of Code and Scratch Jnr and this week
saw the children begin some basic coding and programming using the Blue-Bots, Sphero SPRK+ and Micro
Bits. The levels of engagement and collaborative teamwork has been outstanding to watch as the children have
problem-solved a variety of algorithms without even knowing it! Check out the collage below.

A severe disability kept young Nguyet behind closed doors: inhibited by her condition, her family had little connection with their neighbours. But their confidence and skill grew when they participated in the Catholic Relief Services’ program, Capacity Building for Parent Associations Supporting Children with Disabilities, supported by Caritas Australia. The program offered Nguyet home-based education, and as her skills have grown she is increasingly engaging with her community.

PARISH NEWS
Choir
The choir continues to meet each Wednesday morning at 8am in the music room with Mrs Longbottom
and Mrs Sorenson. All Year 3-6 students are welcome to attend. The choir is now preparing for our
whole school mass on Wednesday 5th, April and for the Holy Week masses.
Youth Group The next Youth Group celebration will be held on Friday, 7th April, 7.00pm-8.30pm in the Par ish
Hall. There will be lots of fun and games, including , ‘A Minute to Win it!’ All Year 4 -10 children
are welcome to attend. If you are able to assist please contact Carmel Mohen at
Family Mass
Our next Family Mass is on the first Sunday of Term 2, April 30. If your child would like to participate
and do a reading at mass please email Raquel Leeks for more details. ([email protected])
Palm Sunday If your child would like to wave a palm as a part of the Palm Sunday mass on Sunday, 9th April at

INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL NEWS
St Luke’s performed very well at the recent Interschool Swimming carnival at the Arena Joondalup.
Many children exceeded expectations and swam “P.B’s”; while many shone in their first Interschool
Competition.
Congratulations to all for their great swimming and behaviour
Thankyou to the parents who helped with the carnival, our many supporters and Mrs Pollard who was
a terrific organisational helper.

PIE DAYS 2017 PLEASE READ IMPORTANT INFORMATION
We now have enough volunteers to help run Pie Days for 2017, thank you to all of the parents who have
volunteered their time. Pie days will commence in week 2 of next term.
On Wednesdays during Terms 2 and 3, children from Years 1 to 6 are able to order a variety of foods for recess
and lunch. This service is run entirely by volunteers and any money raised goes directly to the P&F.
To help us run pie days smoothly please note:
1. No late orders will be accepted
2. Correct money is needed – we are unable to give change
3. No credit will be allowed
4. Use SEPARATE bags for recess, lunch & sushi, & write details at the bottom of bags in large writing.
5. Please do not wrap your childs money in foil, glad wrap ETC
6. Please do not staple or sticky tape the bags
7. Please write clearly NAME
CLASS ORDER & money enclosed
Monday – Pie bags will be delivered to each class by 9.15am
Tuesday – Place your order with payment in the basket by 9am
Wednesday – Children receive their muffin orders for recess. (Sushi ONLY available for lunch)
Lunch orders received by lunchtime and sauce is available.
Counting and heating will be done in the top kitchen next to the art area
FYI - if you have more than one child ordering, it is ok to place the total amount of money of all your children's
orders in just one of the bags.
Just write on all of the rest that the money is in the other siblings bag eg: "all monies for Asha Murphy in big
sister Shannen Murphy's bag class 6b"

MEDIC ALERT– HAND FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
Parents please be aware that we have a confirmed case of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease in
Year 1 Blue. Please make your self aware of the symptoms of this disease by clicking on the link
