God’s Laws God’s laws are not intended to burden or torment us. Instead they are guideposts that point us in the direc-tion of good living. Accordingly, good living requires loving God and loving one another. We should not follow God’s laws out of fear of what might happen if we don’t, but rather view them as a foundation for building rela-tionships and trust with one another and with God. The Shema prayer of Orthodox Jews is based on the reading from Deuteronomy today, “Hear, O Israel.” Every morning people recite the prayer as a profession of their love for God and pledge their obedience to God throughout the day. They pass on their love of God to their children, from one generation to the next.

Las Leyes de Dios Las leyes de Dios no intentan ator-mentarnos o ser una carga. Al contra-rio, son señales que nos guían por el sendero de la buena vida. Por lo tanto, la buena vida requiere que amemos a Dios y nos amemos unos a otros. No debemos seguir las leyes divinas por miedo a lo que pudiera ocurrir si no las seguimos, más bien verlas como un fundamento sobre el cual construir nuestras relaciones y entablar confian-za con los demás y con Dios. La oración Shema de los judíos ortodoxos se basa en la lectura de hoy del Deuteronomio: “Escucha, pues, Israel”. Cada mañana la persona recita la oración como una profesión de amor a Dios y un compromiso de obe-diencia a Dios a lo largo del día. Así transmiten el amor a Dios a sus hijos, de generación en generación.

In Celebration of All Souls Our Annual All Soul’s Novena will run from Fri., Nov. 2 through Mon., Sat. 10. Envelopes will be in the pews for any-one wishing to enroll the name of a loved one into our nine day Mass No-vena. We will also have a table set up in the sanctuary from Nov. 2-18, to place small photos of our deceased loved ones on to honor their memory.

Thanksgiving Day Mass Our Annual Thanksgiving Day Mass will be held on Thurs., Nov. 22 at 8:15AM. Everyone is invited to bring to Mass, the wines and bread that they will serve at dinner later that day for a special blessing.

Celebration of Our Lady The Archdiocese of Los Angeles will host the 87th Annual Celebration of the Devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe on Sun., Dec. 9. Veterans Day Mass Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in San Dimas will celebrate a Mass to honor and remember our veterans and those currently serving our nation on Sat., Nov. 10 at 11AM. It is also a Mass of remembrance for deceased mem-bers of Fr. Thomas Lyons Council of the Knights of Columbus. While we re-member the service of all our veterans, we will pay tribute to the men and wom-en who have served in the recent con-flicts in Afghanistan and the Middle East. Treasures From Our Tradition

Just two years ago, we engaged in one of the core activities of our democratic system: a presidential election. Actually, the institution of election can be traced to traditions in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monastic communities) have almost always been elected by full voting members of their communities. The lifetime appointment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in “chapter” at the death or resignation of the abbot, and fortunately for all involved, cam-paigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Holy Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader re-quests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of consecra-tion or investiture. The ballots are always se-cret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral Col-lege is the determining voice in the presiden-tial election, not the popular election on a November Tuesday, just as the monastic chapter is the electorate. Today, most reli-gious orders elect general superiors in “chapter” by delegates of the professed mem-bers, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. At least we don’t have that weight on our shoulders when we choose a president. Four years at a time will do!

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe Uno de los santos más populares de la época medieval fue el soldado húngaro co-nocido como Martín Caballero o Martín de Tours (c. 315‑397). Esta popularidad se de-bió a su biografía escrita por un discípulo, Sulpicio Severo. Su vida fue el mejor ejemplo de santidad a través de varios siglos. Contie-ne esta biografía muchos de los aconteci-mientos, enseñanzas y milagros de la vida del santo que fue soldado en el ejército ro-mano antes de su conversión. Muchos igno-ran que fue monje, misionero y obispo por muchos años. Su imagen decora muchos almanaques latinoamericanos y él continúa siendo un santo popular. La representación más co-mún de san Martín es la de un soldado ro-mano sobre un caballo que rasga su manto rojo a la mitad con una espada para darle una parte a un pobre sentado a los pies del caballo. Según su biografía, Martín hizo esto durante el proceso de su conversión y resul-ta que el pobre limosnero se le aparece en un sueño revelándose como Cristo mismo, ya que lo que un cristiano hace por los po-bres y marginados lo hace por Jesús.

What is Scrip? How Does it Work?

♦ Buy Scrip Gift Cards, available every first and third Sunday of the month in the Hall from 10AM-12PM or any time from the office during normal hours, in everyday categories includ-ing groceries, gas, restaurants, enter-tainment, and more, from over 750 retailers.

♦ A percentage of each gift card pur-chased goes directly to the church.

♦ Use the Scrip Gift Card on your every-day shopping or as a gift.
