Dear Parents and Friends,
I am delighted to inform you that the Catholic Educaon Office has made a commitment to a refurbishment
program here at St Madeleine's. This project will be completed in three phases with the first phase being
completed in the Christmas holidays. Phase One will be a small aspect of the project and we are yet to confirm
what that will be. We have begun regular meengs with the architects and I will keep you informed as the
planning unfolds.
We have been given this important responsibility and opportunity to create contemporary learning spaces that
suit the way students learn today. Our students learn by construcng and co-construcng ideas and concepts
on their own and in pairs or groups. The emphasis today is on the acve construcon of knowledge by the
learner and we need to reshape our learning spaces with this in mind. Each teacher needs to be able to teach
their class and a smaller group of students. They also work with students in pairs and individually. At mes they
work as a whole grade. At the moment our classrooms are very small and do not allow for the flexibility needed
for these different grouping structures.
We are consulng with our staff and people in other schools who have been through building projects and we
expect to draw from their experience and wisdom to come up with plans that cater for our needs in 2013 and
also into the future. Our spaces need to be flexible to accommodate both current and evolving ways of
teaching. We have this excing opportunity to create the best possible learning environment for all our
students.
Last week I a1ended the informaon night Marian College organized with Susan McLean as the guest speaker.
Susan was a Police Officer for 27 years in Victoria and she has spent the last 20 years working with cyber-
bullying and the effects of social media and gaming on teenagers. It was a most informave evening. One
message was made very clear to all the parents a1ending… It is very difficult to understand and keep up with the
developments in social media. We do need to be informed so we can at least be trying to be somewhere close
to the page our children are on.
I have been in touch with Senior Constable Rob Paterson from the Castle Hill Area Command. Constable Rob
Paterson is the Youth Liason Officer for our area and he will be presenng his important message of cyber safely
to all our students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 on Monday 11th November at 12.15pm in the PMPA. You are very
welcome to a1end Rob's presentaon.
Have a good week!

Child Protection — Volunteer Helpers Following are our current Child Protection procedures:
All helpers (parents, grandparents, etc.) are to wear a
“Volunteer Helper” badge while helping at the school.
1. Parents who volunteer must complete the CEO online
protection Module.
http://childprotection.parra.catholic.edu.au and needs to
be completed every two years which is emailed to the
school after completion.
2. The new, online Working With Children Check
(WWCC) will be phased in over a five year period.
We suggest to parents to do this new working with
children check. It is free because you are volunteers and
at the same time you will receive a clearance for 5 years.
That means you can get involved in any volunteer
activities at your school as well as any other school in
NSW or any child related workplace.
How to apply to complete WWCC
STEP 1
Fill in an online application form at
www.newcheck.kids.nsw.gov.au if you cannot access
the online system, call a customer Support Officer for
assistance on (02) 9286 7219.
When you complete the application, you will receive an
application number. This application number cannot be
used for the online verification process until you
completed STEP 2.
STEP 2
Take your application number and proof of your identity
to a NSW motor registry.
This check remains free for volunteers.
Once your application has been processed, you will
receive the outcome by email (or post if you do not have
an email address). Most applications will be processed
within 48 hours.
You then forward this email to
[email protected] or send in a copy
of the form to the school office for our records.
