THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 13, 2019

FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR

Progress at RocKenRo We clergymen new to RocKenRo have made efforts to get to know you and help you get to know us and to know each other better. We’ve found ways to meet our routine duties to provide the sacraments and care for souls. We’ve been listening to you to come to a better qualitative understanding of how you see yourselves and your mission as disciples of Jesus Christ in the context of his Church. You have helped us and continue to help us in these endeavors.

Meanwhile, we’ve begun a somewhat more quantitative analysis of RockenRo: People: What staff positions does each parish have? What are the abilities of each staff member? What are they accomplishing?

Where are they headed in their ministries and careers? What organizations are active at each parish? What do they do and what more might they do? What about volunteers and hitherto untapped talent?

Money: What are our assets and liabilities? Where does the money come from and where is it going? What’s the future in planned giving and estate bequests? How can we cut costs or otherwise control loss? Do we need to expand revenue to fuel any expansion of our mission?

Property: What is the condition of our land and buildings? How do we use them? How do we need to adapt our usage to better serve our mission? Are we maintaining these for future use or deferring maintenance to the next generation? Have we addressed basic safety and security concerns? What about furnishings and other aspects of the parishes’ patrimony?

Programming: Above all, what happens at Sunday Mass: attendance, music, ministers, preaching, hospitality, bulletins? What about daily Mass? How many people receive how many sacraments through the year? What else happens: religious education and faith formation, care for the bereaved, outreach and social ministry, social events,

As with the qualitative, so with the quantitative: If you have information you think I should have, please email me or convey the information to the pastoral and finance councilors at your parish.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION PROGRAM Bridgeville/Cecil grouping will host a weekend marriage preparation program on Friday, February 8 & Saturday, February 9 at St. Mary’s Church (10 St. Mary’s Lane, Cecil, PA 15321). Couples who are planning to be married in the Church must first attend marriage preparation or “pre-cana” classes. Contact the parish office at [email protected] or 412-221-5213. A DAY OF PRAYER AND PENANCE FOR LIFE

In all the Dioceses of the United States, January 22 shall be observed as a day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. On Tuesday, January 22 our parish will celebrate this event with the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Please join us this day as we, as a parish, pray for the great gift of life.

CARING HEIGHTS PROJECT If you are not sure what to do with your gently used Christmas cards, please consider putting them in the Caring Heights bin located in the back of the Church. The residents use them for their craft projects. Thank you.

LENTEN FISH FRY 2019 As we continue on this journey with our new grouping of parishes, we are seeking the many gifts of collaboration, courage and compassion within our parish family to bring about a truly successful Lenten Fish Fry. Let us once again work in Fellowship toward this goal.

We’ll need our experienced and cherished volunteers as always...plus some new people to join in to make this all work. Keep checking the bulletin for more information.

For much needed help in coordinating our Fish Fry, please call Tim Davis at 412-445-0113.

SPECIAL COLLECTION This weekend January 19/20, 2019 there will be a special collection to benefit the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech and St. Anthony Programs. This special collection provides vital funds to continue their missions and ministry. Please be generous.

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! To Each Individual The Manifestation Of The Spirit Is Given For Some Benefit - Last weekend, as we celebrated the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, we also had an opportunity to reflect on our own Baptism. Through Baptism we are washed clean of Original Sin and enter into the life of grace through the gift of the Holy Spirit. And it doesn’t end there! In Confirmation we receive the fullness of God’s Spirit and are sent forth into the world as instruments of his life and love. Yet, while we are united in the Spirit of God as his children, we are not robots who all speak the same words or who do identical deeds in God’s name. Instead, as Saint Paul reminds us in today’s second reading, each one of us shared uniquely in the gifts of the Spirit so that we might fulfill God’s unique will for us. The journey of our life of faith must then include discerning the gifts that God has given us and how he wants us to use them. This is an important part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! Initiative. If each one of us has been endowed with spiritual gifts in what ways can we use them to enliven the Church? Spend a few moments in prayer this week and ask the Lord to help you know the gifts the Spirit has bestowed upon you and how you are being called to share them. To learn more and to stay informed visit onmissionchurchalive.org.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

SCHOOL NEWS The students will be off tomorrow in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Report cards for the second quarter will be sent home on Wednesday! The first semester is officially over!

Thank you to everyone who collected Box Tops for us. We received a check for $302.30 from General Mills recently. Please keep sending those in!

THIRD GRADE NEWS St. Malachy’s third graders are off to a great start in 2019! The students enjoyed their break and came back eager to learn. Each student thought of New Year’s resolutions for at school and at home - we’ll have to see how many stick with it! During English, students are focusing on verbs and contractions, and they continue to improve their writing skills by adding time-order words to their paragraphs. In Reading, the class recently read a non-fiction poem about “growing” raisins (which unfortunately did not seem to encourage many students to actually like eating raisins). Third grade is excited to officially start a new math unit on multiplication! So far students have mastered their facts for the 0s, 1s, and 2s, and are on their way to conquering the more difficult 3s and 4s. In Religion, the class is learning to show God’s love by being open to all people. The children are reading parables and discussing how everyone, regardless of our differences, deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS We are currently mailing all parishioners a statement of contributions made to St. Malachy Parish in 2018. In addition to being a help for tax preparation, these statements can offer an opportunity to review your support for the church. Please remember that St. Malachy has to deal with rising prices the same as anyone else. In addition, this may be an opportunity for people to consider electronic giving. As with many bills that people pay on-line, electronic giving is a safe and convenient way to donate to the parish. It simplifies our lives in that our church envelope is now not an item to have to remember. For more info., call the rectory during business hours or go the parish website at www.stmalachypgh.org and click on Stewardship. If you do not receive a statement by February 4 please contact the parish office. Thank you for your support.

YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS Have you ever allowed God to speak to you through silence? High school men, give God the chance to speak directly to your heart at the High School Silent Retreat, held February 9-10 at the Martina Spiritual Renewal Center. It will include Mass, adoration, dynamic talks, and solid brotherhood. No cost. To register, visit PGHPriest.com by January 25.

ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED Saint Malachy Parish is looking for children in grades four to eight, teens in high school, AND adults to become Altar Servers. Altar serving is an important liturgical ministry and a great way to help our parish. This is also a wonderful opportunity for parents and their children to volunteer together in service to our Lord! We plan to start training sessions in February, so if you are interested or would like to find out more, please contact Steven Swank at 412-771-7480 or [email protected]. Please note: adults must complete all safe environment requirements prior to starting to serve.

MAGNIFICAT PITTSBURGH Ladies, come to the Magnificat Pittsburgh prayer breakfast on February 9 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon at the Double Tree by Hilton, Cranberry Twp. Hear the story of conversion of St. Mary Gianna Thornby, DLIC. She grew up with little faith but experienced conversion after surviving the shootings at Columbine High School. Hear her Columbine experience and her journey to a loving God, conversion to Catholicism, and to final vows in 2018 as a religious sister. She serves at The Ark & The Dove in Gibsonia. Cost of the breakfast is $23. To register, call Kay at 724-772-6749 or Pam at 412-461-8906 or go to:

www.magnificatpittsburgh.org Registration deadline is February 1.

THANK YOU

Below is an excerpt of a thank you for the 2018 World Mission Sunday collection: “Thank you for the 2018 World Mission Sunday contribution of $1,329.00...I am grateful to you for encouraging the missionary spirit of prayer and sacrifice among your parishioners who are in the prayers of those they help in the Missions.
